[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Help reading 1716 Altares marriage record of Pedro Cota and Angela de Sao Mateus

2019-07-24 Thread William Seidler
Hi Doreen,

I see the groom's name just a couple lines below the blurry damage. The
last three words on the line is: "Pedro Cotta filho". The next line
continues with Roque? Martins? and his wife Maria Cotta, both deceased;
with Angela de São Mateus, daughter of Baltazar? Martins? deceased, and his
wife Beatriz de Mello?

I hope this helps some, but I am certain about much of it, hence the
question marks.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Another set of eyes needed

2019-07-16 Thread William Seidler
I agree with Cheri on the dates. Dois ends with an "s" and this seems to
end with an "e". Baptism date is definitely the 16th but spelled
("desaceis" instead of dezaseis)

The father is José (old sp=Joze) Teixeira (abbr Txr.a) Nunes and the mother
is Barbara Maria. The names are a bit clearer on Manuel's baptism that I
posted yesterday on your other post.

I don't see Joao's parents listed in the marriage to Maria de Almeida. He

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Obit margin help Joam Pimentel quemado

2019-07-14 Thread William Seidler
The margin note looks like it might be dos Ramos (written mor like raMos).
Was he born near a Palm Sunday? In the text though it does say queimado
just as you said other records give. I believe he is 54 years old (more or
less) and it say he is natural and resident of this parish of Nossa Senhora
dos Remidios in Fajazinha. I can't make everything out but I think on line
6 it gives his testementeiro (executor of his will or estate?) his wife
Mariana de Freitas and later makes reference to something for the soul of
his first wife Anna de Freitas.

Hopefully this helps and that someone better corrects any mistakes I may
have made.

Gordon,

Both of these are for someone with the first name Gaspar.

The first can be found here
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/TER-AH-SANTABARBARA-B-1584-1591/TER-AH-SANTABARBARA-B-1584-1591_item1/P83.html
 and
I believe it is the 1590 baptism of Gaspar, son of Antonio Lucas and Maria
Luisa.

The second is a 1639 obituary of Gaspar Lucas (likely the same person in
the above baptism) and can be found here

These are from the frequesia of Santa Barbara das Nove Ribeiras on Terceira
Island.

Is that something you are looking for?

Yes there was definitely some moving around. My wife's 3d great
grandfather was born in Praia, Graciosa; showed up in Matriz de Sao
Sebastiao, Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel where he married a woman from Santo
Amaro, Sao Jorge. The couple had their first child in Praia, Graciosa, a
few months later, then their second and third in Urzelina, Sao Jorge. I
then lost track of him, but his wife died in Urzelina in 1901 and her obit
said she was still married.

Yes I believe you are correct for P.o (Pedro) and frz (Fernandes); miz is
Martins.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help with bride' father's last name

2019-06-16 Thread William Seidler
I've never seen that but apparently the colon goes between compound
surnames: Gonçalves:Ferreira (groom), Gonçalves:Ferreira (groom's father),
then I believe Gonçalves:Fialho for the bride's father.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Valadao, Flores (need help reading)

2019-06-15 Thread William Seidler

Hi Sam,

The mother looks like Francisca dos Santos to me. I guess that your right
about Valedão because I can't think of what else V.am could be (any
suggestions?) I have several Valedão ancestors on Terceira bur I've never
seen the abbreviation. I see the date 11 Mar 1790 as you do. I think the
godparents are Manuel and Maria, children of Antonio de Freitas and his
wife Maria de São Pedro. I do not see grandparents listed as they are
usually not given during this earlier era.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Cannot make out names in this Altares baptism.

2019-06-13 Thread William Seidler
I think the father is Antonio Jacinto Fernandes, single; and the mother is
Rosa Jacinta, single, daughter of Jacinto do Couto and his wife Joaquina
Maria (I think also from Biscoitos)

The godfather is Manuel do Couto, brother of the mother. Madrinha is
Barbara de Jesus (Vieira or Viuva).

2019-06-11 Thread William Seidler
Brian--
If that is the right couple and their daughter Maria, I found Maria Dias on
the Urzelina Confessional Rois labeled 1929-1931-1933 on the
SaoJorgeGenealogy.org site. Look on page 35, entry 228. It has Maria Dias
and two children (Elena and Laurentino). I believe Maria's father is on
page 37 item 248 listed as Manuel Jorge, his wife Josefa Victorina (her
name lined out and scrawled with "America") and 6 kids. The Jaime Soares
de Noronha your have on your tree as Laurentino's father is on page 10
entry 39 with his other kids. All of these are from the year 1929 part of
this document.

2019-06-11 Thread William Seidler
Hello Brian,

I think it likely Mary Bordi found the correct couple. They had a daughter
named Maria on 30 May 1904 that may be your Maria. I've sent you an email
about this also.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Translation help Costa Pimental families

2019-06-03 Thread William Seidler

Below is my take on the parent and grandparent names for Ermalinda, José,
and two named João. I see no indication that they are related to each
other or the family you seek. The link you provided to a record for
"Conceição" has no Conceição that I can see on that page. The closest I
see is an exposto (male foundling) named Cornelio.

Hermalinda (sp?) Born 18 Jul 1867 and baptized on 21 July 1867

Father: Francisco Jose de Machado, natural of Santo Antonio, Magdalena,
Island of Pico

Mother: Maria de Jesus, natural of this parish. Parents married in this
parish where they live.

Paternal grandparents: Manuel Gonçalves Ferreira and Maria? Eulalia?

Maternal grandparents: João José da Costa and Maria de Jesus

José: Born 20 Nov 1869 and baptized on 25 Nov 1869

Father: José Francisco Abreu

Mother: Rita Thomasia; both parents natural of this parish where they live
and were married.

Paternal grandparents: Francisco Antonio Abreu and Maria de Jesus

Maternal grandparents: José Noresio? de Simas and Maria Thomasia

1st João: Born 21 Oct 1871 and baptized on 25 Oct 1871

Father: José Caetano Simião

Mother: Anna de Jesus Carvalho; both parents natural of this parish

Paternal Grandparents: Manuel Caetano Simião and Anna Emilia

Maternal Grandparents: João Furtado Carvalho and Ignacia de Jesus

2nd João: Born 15 Nov 1871 and baptized on 19 Nov 1871.

Father: Antonio Caetano Noia

Mother: Rosa de Jesus; both parents natural of this parish

Paternal grandparents: José Caetano Noia e Maria de Jesus

Maternal grandparents: José Coelho Salvador and Margarida de Jesus

I hope you find some help in this. Hopefully following Cheri's advice you
can find a more definitive record connection.

I believe Sam has it all correct. The word is Freguesa (sp?) which
parishioner. It also says she died without sacraments because she drowned

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Help with cause of death - Domingos do Rego

2019-05-23 Thread William Seidler
I don't think that is "hu", but rather "em" (with interference from the "f"
in "afogado" on the line above.

I thinks it says ...morreu afogado e não consta aparacer (actually looks
like "apareller"?) mais ?? fiz este assento em quinze do dito mez era
freguese deste matriz"

I think it says he was not seen again. Hopefully this lame attempt doesn't
get the real Portuguese speakers (such as my wife) laughing too much.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Roadblocks in my tree (Cordeiro, Dias, Sequeira) Sao Jorge, Graciosa, maybe Pico

2019-05-21 Thread William Seidler
I just checked Zulmira's baptism which says her father is natural of
Almagreira, Ilha do Pico (Not Santa Maria). This agrees with the marriage
that Rosemarie found because Almagreira is a locality within the parish of
Lajes. This is different than the Almagreira on Santa Maria which is a
parish.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Roadblocks in my tree (Cordeiro, Dias, Sequeira) Sao Jorge, Graciosa, maybe Pico

2019-05-21 Thread William Seidler
Hello,

Antonio's first wife is Antonia de Jesus and she is your ancestor (mother
of Francisco). She died 10 Sep 1833 and Antonio married at least once more
after that. Here is their marriage:
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/GRA-SC-SAOMATEUS-C-1808-1825/GRA-SC-SAOMATEUS-C-1808-1825_item1/P81.html

Do you have a source for Francisco José Cordeiro dying in 1887? On Maria
Isabel's obit in 1901 it says she is married to him.

Here is his baptism. The margin note on the next page that shows him
marrying Ludovina de Lourdes Rezendes confirms it. (#31 bottom right)

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Side margin help please, Sao Pedro, Santa Maria

2019-05-19 Thread William Seidler
It looks to me like José Ricardo, 33 years old, son of José Ricardo and
Maria José (?do Rego?) and that it took place on 23 Jun (presumably 1934)
and the note is dated 24 Jun 1934.

2019-05-14 Thread William Seidler
Just in case you still use this email address from 8 years ago, I think I
have found the connection to show that your great great grandfather
Francisco P. Mello and my great grandfather Ventura P. Mello were
brothers. Please respond if you would like to compare notes.

William,
I don't know if this will help, but in "Portuguese to Hawaii" there is a Manuel
de Freitas Braz who at age 26 went to Hawaii from Madeira or Sao Miguel in
1884.  He was single.

Hi William,

You know that you are on the Azores genealogy list and that the Azores are a
separate archipelago from Madeira, correct?  Although we have a few researchers
here that do research Madeira, you will find most of the Madeira researchers on
the Madeira list.
http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/PRT/PRT-MADEIRA.html

The Archive Regional of Madeira (ARM) has their passaportes (emigration out of
Madeira) online:
http://www.arquivo-madeira.org/item1.php?lang=1&id_channel=40&id_page=285

They also have some marriages and baptisms online too.  You will need to know
the freguesia (village) that they came from in Madeira.

Good luck,

Repost for William Monk, w.monk1 at gmail.com

I was looking for family!
Island of Kauai, Hawaii!
I wish to find family of my great grandfather by the name of John de Freitas
Braz!

The Braz was dropped for some reason in the next generation to just Freitas!
Great grandmother was named Maria de Jesus I am told!
Thanks for any help you can give!William Monk

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Norte Grande - impressions

2012-02-20 Thread William
HI!
Last year when I visited St. Catherines Cemetery in Kealia, Kauai looking for
family I took pics of the headstones there!
When I read you were looking for someone from the Teixeira family I remembered
I had about 6 pics of headstones for them!
So if anyone is interested I can upload those pic for viewing!

Hi João Ventura,

Thanks for your impressions on Norte Grande. Very interesting.

I became very aroused by the last paragraqph of your message...
Would you be kind enough to decline (to the List or to me only, exceptionally
!...)
who the grandfather was (his name)?..

I will leave this request up to your discretion and  judgement...

After finishing the genealogy of Norte Grande, there are some impressions of
the village that I would like to share with the list.

There are two independent communities: Norte Grande and Santo António. It is
like two different villages, who share a common church. The richer people live
in Norte Grande, while the poor live in Santo António. People from one place
don't usually marry someone from the other.

I also found a single mother refered to as: prostitute.

The number of slaves is not significant, but there are two brothers, former
slaves, that became free and one of them has descendants until today.

There is an important remark on a single mother: the child was born in Calheta
and the grandfather took the baby to be baptized in Norte Grande (middle of the
1600's) to avoid public shame, because he was related to the important families
of Calheta. Again social status playing an important role in the community.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Azores Visit Suggestions

2012-02-12 Thread William
Hi!
Last year we vacationed in Kauai and took time to go to St. Catherines Church
in Kealia!I took pictures from the church records for births, deaths-etc.Then
we went to the cemetery there and took many pics of names I have heard from the
past!My grandmother was Antonia Freitas whos father was named John de Freitas
Braz!My great grandmother's last name was Cardoza!Of course I am not sure of
any of this as it is all by word of mouth!I find that many times names are
changed to suit the needs of the persons doing the changes! As an example the de
Freitas name was changed to Serpa reasons unknown reasons and de Freitas was
also changed to being spelled Freytas or something similar! We are currently in
our 2nd day of an 8 day trip to Kauai and would love to hear of someone from
the Freitas side while we are here!By the way so many of your family names I
have heard from the past so just maybe were related somehow!Katherine Kam Lin
Kung, my mother, was born in
Kilauea, Kauai! My grandparents were married in Hanalei, Kauai! My great
grandfather was buried in Kahlihiwai, Kauai and washed away by a Tzunami in the
1950s!Thanks for your time!

My husband and I are going on a cruise this spring that includes a one day stop
on Faial. Most of my ancestors are from Feteira on the maternal side and from
Horta and Flamengos on the paternal side. The most recent names on the maternal
side include Silveira, Gonsalves, Correia and Vargas and  Silva and Martin on
the paternal side. My cousin did a lot of research at the Grupo de História das
populações (http://www.ghp.ics.uminho.pt/) site and was able to trace back to
the 17th century on that site, but there is very little information about any
of the people. Those who immigrated all came to Alameda County in California
(Fremont, Oakland, San Leandro, Hayward). We have a lot of information about
them once they arrived in the U.S., but almost nothing else.  Does anyone have
any suggestions for places for us to visit in Faial to get more information
about those who came from Faial or web sites that might have more information?
I do not speak or read
Portuguese so any suggestions would be helpful. We also have no information
about possible descendants who reside in Faial and wondered if anyone has any
suggestions for locating them.  Thanks for any assistance or ideas.  Diane
