Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] American versions of Ignacia

2014-10-25 Thread 'Elle Dwyer' via Azores Genealogy
Erica, My grandfather whose middle name was Ignacio (Antonio Ignacio de Faria)
sometimes used Ines and Inos when he first came to this country, but by the
time he had children, he used Enos, not only for himself, but also as the
middle name for most of his children, both male and female. They were told it
was an important family name, but didn't realize it was Ignacio in the Azores.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Mistake on Minho SantissimaTrindade, Capelo, Isle of Faial records?

2014-07-08 Thread 'Elle Dwyer' via Azores Genealogy
I really appreciate the Minho records. They have given me the start I needed in
my search for ancestors. But I think I have found a mistake. I would like
someone more experienced to look at  these records from Santissima Trindade,
Capelo, Isle of Faial and see what you think.
The UMinho record I think is wrong involves Antonio Francisco Rodriques and his
wife Maria Perpetua. They are listed as the parents of my ancestor Antonio
Francisco Matos. But I have looked up the actual birth records of the children
of Antonio Francisco Matos and Ana Thomasia Coracao de Jesus . None of the
children’s birth records give Antonio Francisco Rodriques and Maria Perpetua as
the paternal grandparents, rather they give Antonio Francisco de Vargas and
Catarina Inacia. Here is the Uminho page for A. F. Matos:

http://www.ghp.ics.uminho.pt/geneweb/gwd.exe?b=capelo;lang=en;p=antonio+francisco+de;n=matos

If you then click on the page of Antonio Francisco Rodriques from there, Maria
Perpetua, his wife, and Maria Perpetua the child have the same date of birth,
maybe the first hint that something is wrong.

These are three of the children’s birth records:

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] FARIA from Contra Costa, CA

2014-04-09 Thread Elle Dwyer
H Everyone,
I have been following your group for the last few weeks and can't believe my
first time writing is in a reply rather than a question. Although I do not
recognize the family you are talking about, some of the names mentioned are
very familiar to me. My grandfather, Antonio Ignacio Faria (Ignacio becomes
Enos in the U.S.)
went to Contra Costa around 1899 to join family members that had left Capelo,
Faial earlier. He eventually came back to Taunton, MA and settled there with
the wife he married while in Contra Costa. I have been researching this side of
my family for a year and there are surnames Faria, Ignacio, Ignacia, Vargas,
and   Pereira. I have looked at many ship records and found many Farias coming
into New Bedford, MA, Providence, RI and New York City, and then continuing
overland to the West Coast. If you can't find any information listing the
island your Farias came from, it wouldn't heard to go into the Azores Gen Web
site for Capelo, Faial. I will also search to see if I can find any connection
between our families. Maybe we are related.  Eleanor Faria Dwyer

Thanks for the reply. Sorry, I just assumed that since my subject heading
said California, people would know that's where I was talking about. Port
Costa is a census-designated place in Contra Costa County, CA. Manuel was
living there in 1900 apparently. After that, most of my records had the
family living in Richmond, Contra Costa County, CA.

Thanks too for the clarification on the name. I figured that Manoel was the
Portuguese spelling. Funny, last night after posting this, I was digging
around in ship passenger lists and found a Manoel, but whoever transcribed
the information thought the "o" in his name was an "s" and so now there are
several records that say "Mansel" Faria! All the name spelling changes sure
makes it hard to track a specific person! :)

I found several records then in the ship passenger lists, with many
Manoel's and many surname variations like de Faria, Ferreira, Pereira,
Farie, Farria, and Farias. The only one who was close to the age my Manuel
was said to have been during immigration was a Mansel (Manoel) Faria who
was 18 (year of birth abt.1875) and on the ship Peninsular which arrived in
NY, NY 9 May 1893. He was a laborer and from Fayal, Azores. He was going to
Fall River, MA. The dates are a little off from my Manuel: my records had
his immigration year as 1894 when he was 17, and his year of birth as 1877.
The dates and ages from the ship's record I found last night are off about
a year or two, so not sure if I have the right person still.

I also don't know if Manuel was on a ship that went directly from the
Azores to San Francisco or if he was one of many Manuel Faria's who went to

Forgive me for joining in this conversation -* *am still trying to figure
out how this group works. A few years ago you were kind enough to send me
info - I wonder if you mght be willing to send what you have again. * *I
seem to have several blanks. My grandfather was Francisco da Silva born 15
Nov 1881 in Mosteiros, Ponta Delgado, San Miguel. His father was Henrique
da Silva born appros 1855 and mother was Ana Jacinta de Medeiros (not much
info on either of them)
Next generation was Francisco da Silva and Ana Rosa (again no info)

I seem to remember that we are distantly related. I would truly appreciate
any info you can give me. The only document I have is my grandfather's
birth cert. I have ordered the Family Finder and intend to send it in as
soon as I decide who to test.

Thank you,

Cheri,
I so apologize, but I cannot seem to wrap my brain around this DNA. I
ordered the Family Finder and have received it. I have two choices.
1. I can have my mom checked, she is 96 and her father was from the Azores
and her mom from Ireland.
2. I can use my own and maybe get my mom's side plus my dad's (from
England).

Is there an advantage to using only my mom - would I get a more accurate
outcome by only looking on her side?

If I do my own, what are the negatives?

thank you so much,
Ellen (yes, I am female - no close male relatives) I could probably find a
cousin on my mom's side or a 3rd cousin on my dad's)

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Bretanha Connections

2013-04-26 Thread elle
Hi Rick,
I am afraid my tree is not very complete. Actually, what I have I got from
John, however, I do not find him on my tree - prehaps it is because he is
still alive. I have an Antonia Viveiros who married Jao Raposo in 1745. I
also have a Manuel de Riveiros born 1848. I have just ordered the Family
DNA, so maybe that will help me to fill in the blanks.

I have a question, maybe you might know. When I send in the DNA should I
include only my Azores side or should I include the Irish side as well. If
I use my mother's DNA (she is 96) I will get her parents DNA - father from
Azores and mother from Ireland. Or should I use my own DNA to see if I can
capture my father's side as well. My father was from England.
Thanks for replying - I am looking forward to filling in the blanks.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Sao Jorge marriage records

2013-04-23 Thread elle
Hello All,
I have not used this site in a long time - but have finally found a little
time to do some research. Does anyone know how to use the CCA site? My
grandfather was Francisco da Silva, born 1881 in Mosteiros, San Miguel,
Ponta Delgado. He was the son of Henrique da Silva (1855) and Ana Jacinta
de Medeiros. Also, can someone tell me a little more about the advantages
of doing the DNA?
Thanks, Ellen Ade
