When an email is sent to you, particularly with [no subject] and some random
link (www.example.com), DON'T click on it.  Just delete it.  If it went to the
list, I'll remove it from the archives, but I can't remove it from your inbox.
You will have to hit delete (I wouldn't report it as spam, because if the
person restores their email account, then you won't see any posts from them, as
they will all be going to your spam folder).

If you ever have this problem with your email being compromised, I will
moderate you so your computer doesn't continue to send out the spam links to
the list.  Once you have your computer or email restored, drop me a note
directly to my email, and I'll unmoderate you.

Thanks,
Cheri Mello

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Catholic or Jewish Roots?

Al...there are tons of Bettencourts in the Bay Area. That's why my research is
so hard. My grandfather was John Enos Bettencourt, grandmother Anna Costa. His
brothers names are so common, I can't verify.

My father had a sister who married a Bettencourt.  It is obviously a common
name as I am acquainted with at least five different Bettencourt families.

Could it still be possible that people who settled in that area near
Lisbon could have been from France? I know that Portugal was settlers
from all different countries when it became established.

Vila Franca is an old city near Lisbon.  Vila Franca de Xira.
According to -Nossa Senhora da Vida- 3rd Visconde de Botelho, that Vila
Franca do Campo was named by Goncalo Vaz Botelho, one of the early
colonizers in Sao Miguel.  It is thought that he was born in the region
of Vila Franca de Xira, close to Lisbon where his family had good
estates (seigniories).  Many of us are descendants of Goncalo Vaz
Botelho.

There's been a couple of things going around in the genealogy community.

One is a possible bot or virus.  A message is sent out with just a URL.  I
think that they are just selling pharmaceuticals.  No text, no nothing.  If you
get one of these, delete it.  If it comes through on the list, I will delete it
out of the archives, but you need to delete it out of your inbox.  There is
nothing I can do if someone's computer has a problem and is sending out the
URL, except moderate the entire list, looking for messages that contain just a
URL.

The other is a scam out of Nigeria, stating that the person was robbed in
London and needs money to pay their hotel bill.  This is an email hack.  Don't
respond to these messages.  Delete them.  If you are worried about the person
sending the email, email them under their alternate email if you know it, or
call them on the phone.

This is an FYI since one URL came through to the list.  The other I caught and
deleted.  The Nigerian thing about being in London was on another list and also
mentioned by Dick Eastman.
