[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Steve Perry Lead Vocalist of Journey

2015-02-16 Thread jt
Steve Perry's mother is from Pico. She is a cousin of my paternal
grandfather who is from Lajes do Pico. My aunt knew his mother and father
and stepfather but she is not sure exactly what the degree of cousinship is
and I don't have enough info to find the link. I do have his grandparents
names somewhere but that is as far as I got.

[AZORES-Genealogy] ftdna "in common with"

2014-04-01 Thread jt
There used to be a feature in ftdna called "in common with" and you could
pick one of the names you matched and see who you both matched. I don't
see that anymore. Has that gone away or ?

Thx.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Trip to Sao Jorge

2013-07-11 Thread jt
I also recommend viagens aquarius for Sao Jorge. I used them when I was
there and they were very helpful, even told me about an express ferry to
get there from Pico, what time it left, met me when I got to Sao Jorge,
took me to my hotel, took me on a tour of the island and arranged for a cab
ride to the airport on the day I left. They even helped me try and find
the house where my grandmother had lived! Did I mention I don't speak
Portuguese? If your relatives do speak it, they won't need as much help as
I did.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: BIBLIOTECA PUBLICA E ARQUIVO DE PONTA DELGADA Archive Requests

2013-05-13 Thread jt
I noticed that the old NEPS for Lajes do Pico also now has records to
1911. I thought I just missed a msg noting that.

George, I think the confusion is with the title "archive requests". I
thought this was a list of requests for records until I kept reading and
realized you were telling us that this was a list of the records now
available for the places shown. Maybe a title like "More Records Added
to Archives" or something like that would be clearer. Anyway, looks like
we should recheck the islands we are interested in to see if more records
have been added.

Thx for the info.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Chromosome Browser for Family Finder DNA results

2013-05-10 Thread jt
Kathleen Allen is my confirmed 3rd cousin. My aunt is a suggested 4th
cousin remote match for her, which makes sense since my match is on the
other side of my family, although apparently there is a more remote link
also. We both match Vivian Christy (her 5th me 6th cousins) and I also
match all of Vivian's relatives tested and have found links to all except
Frank Patrick Holmes, who is a suggested 3rd cousin. My aunt matches all
except Frank Holmes and Gertrude. So my link with Frank should be either my
maternal grandfather on Pico or my maternal grandmother on Sao Jose. Guess
I'll do some chromosome matching to see if there is any commonality.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Birth Records From 1700's

2013-05-06 Thread jt
I know that at least some of the birth records from the 1800's show the
grandparents names. Does anyone know if the ones from the 1700's do also?
I am mainly interested in this for Pico and Sao Jorge. I tried looking at
one of the records from the 1700's but it is so hard to read I decided to
see if the info I want would be there before spending any more time on it.

Thx for any help.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Lajes, Pico names for David da Silva Cornell

2013-05-06 Thread jt
David,

Your thought was correct. There are other people out there who are
related. I just checked and your great grandfather and mine are 3rd
cousins, which makes us 6th cousins. Not a close relationship but still
related. I'm also pretty sure that someone I've tried to match with has an
Enos in their tree but I don't remember who it was. Hopefully I will run
across it again. Anyway, my great grandfather is Manuel Pereira Domingos,
born 1843, and the link is thru Joao Carlos da Silveira and Maria do
Rosario. So one connection made.

[AZORES-Genealogy] DNA MATCHES!

2012-09-15 Thread jt
Recently got the results of my mtdna FMS test (also known as FGS or Coding
Region). Have one match so far and we were able to find the link in one
day! Also have found the link for a few family finder matches. Still
looking for the link on a few others. Some matches haven't yet
responded. If they would post a Gedcom, it would make it much easier when
initially contacting them.

I'm wondering how other members are doing on matching. Finding many
links? Do you find that some people just don't respond? Are many members
doing the dna tests? I'm enjoying working with people from all over to
find out how we are related.

What if they were lost at sea? Would their death be recorded somewhere?

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: San Jose Death Mercury & News Obit Lookup Help

2010-10-07 Thread jt
The library at San Jose State has archives on microfilm for SJ
Mercury. Not sure how far back they have them but I know at least
thru 1950's. FYI, some of the more current issues are on library
online but obits are not included. And there is a parking garage
across the street in case anyone is worried about the parking
situation. I don't live there but have used the archives.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Ship name

2009-12-11 Thread jt
Hi Cheri,

Is there someplace to look for crew lists for non-whaling ships that
sailed into New Bedford? My ggf was reportedly a ship captain but we
were told that it was not a whaling ship. I did search this website
but did not find him although I used variations of his name. We were
told that his name was listed in "the maritime museum in Boston".
Of course we've also been told that he was buried in Hawaii and on San
Miguel!

Thx.
