An appeal for help:

Joam (Joao) Pereira Pires, born about 1845 Beira, Velas, Sao Jorge. Was
in California (Rough and Ready in Nevada County) by 1872 (He is
found among the first 1,700 men of Portuguese descent who registered

 (Sorry for the misfire there).

As Dano eluded to, I think it depends more on the time period.  The Panama
Canal was around the 19teens, if my memory serves me correctly.

However, I'm pretty sure most Portuguese came to the east coast first (if
headed for America.  Remember, Hawaii was not a state until 1959).  Then
many made their way overland (most likely train).  I don't remember where I
read that.  When I find that source, I will post it.

If you post the approximate dates for immigration to America (and repost the
names for those who didn't catch it the first time) along with approximate
birth dates, someone on this list might be able to point you in the right
 direction.

Katherine,

I couldn't help but related to your message. My grandfather Joao
Pereira Pires (b.1845 Beira, Sao Jorge) arrived in San Francisco
sometime in the late 1860s after first going to sea, He supposed
arrived in Hawaii on a banana boat. By 1872 he was among the first
1,700 registered voters of Portuguese descent in California, mining in
Rough and Ready in Nevada County. He went by the name John Geniella,
which is another story in itself.

Unfortunately I can find no immigration, passport or any other records
that could help tell this part of his story.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: DNA Testing Companies and Types of DNA tests (for genealogy)

2011-05-20 Thread mikeg
Cheri,
Thanks for you call, and the explanation below. Good stuff. I think I
get it. Let me know how the inquiry to Family Tree comes out. Best,
Mike

On May 19, 2:49 pm, Cheri Mello gfsche...@gmail.com wrote:
Just so everyone is clear (and this can be confusing), I'll outline a little
 of this below.

SOME DNA Testing companies (my list is not comprehensive).
 1) Ancestry.com
 2) Family Tree DNA (FTDNA)

They are not the same.  They different companies, just as much as buying a
Sony TV is different than buying a TV made by Sharp.  Two different
 companies.

 1) Ancestry.com offers Y-DNA testing (for men - the father's father's
father's line - strictly the male line, all men, all the way back).  I think
the most markers they test for is 46.  They also offer mtDNA testing for
either men or women.  This traces the mother's mother's mother's line -
strictly the female line, all women, all the way back).  I don't remember
off the top of my head if they test both mtDNA regions or only 1.
Therefore, Ancestry offers Y DNA testing and mtDNA testing.  Two types of
 tests.

 2) FTDNA offers Y-DNA testing.  They are now up to a 111 marker test (that's
only been out a couple of months now).  FTDNA also offers mtDNA testing.
They test for both regions (called HyperVariable Region 1 and 2 or HVR1 and
HVR2) as well as the Full Genomic Sequence (FGS) which is the entire 16,000+
mitochondrial molecule.  Last year, FTDNA began offering a new type of test
that they named Family Finder.  This is the autosomal testing that has been
mentioned in another thread (topic).  It tests the mixture of your 22 pairs
of chromosomes that can cover your pedigree back to at least the testee's 2
great-grandparents.   Therefore, FTDNA offers Y DNA testing, mtDNA testing,
and autosomal (Family Finder) DNA testing.  Three types of tests.

Why I like FTDNA (and why the Azores DNA project is housed there).
 1) They are the first and the largest DNA testing company.  Being big is
important in the DNA world.  It means more people to compare your DNA test
against and more chances to find matches and new cousins.
 2) They deal exclusively with genealogists.  That's their focus - genealogy
and family history.  Yes, you can find other DNA companies that will do some
family testing, but that's not really their focus.  It's kind of like a side
 thing.
 3) They deal exclusively with DNA.  That's their only product.  I've got an
Ancestry subscription and I've called Ancestry to ask them about their DNA
(on more than one occasion too).  They always have to check my subscription
and then try to upgrade me.  It feels as if they didn't listen to my
question about DNA.  They'd rather sell me something else.
 4) FTDNA has a complete advisory board and adheres to the National Institute
of Standards and Technology (NIST), a government agency (I assume American
government).  They've even helped contribute and refine some standards.
 5) They store your DNA for 25 years if you would like further testing.
 6) They have wonderful administrator tools that allows me and the
co-administrators to help you manage your DNA.

If you tested with Ancestry.com or another testing company, FTDNA will offer
special pricing to convert you over (you can't repair your Sony TV by
putting in a part from Sharp).http://goo.gl/Jul1o

Hope this clarifies things a bit.

 Hi Cheri,

I asked Bennett (FTDNA President for those reading who don't know who

Jewish DNA.  So that would fit with the history of Sephardic Jews
 settling the Azores.

My son, husband, and myself all have varying degrees of Middle
 Eastern DNA results.

I also tested my father-in-law and he has two small segment matches to
two men who ONLY have Continental Portuguese ancestry.  Interesting...

 Kind regards,

41% of Caucasians are Group A
 09%                           Group B

The Rh group derive their name from the Rhesus monkey in which they

When we say Rh Negative that is only part of the story. I.e only the D

are Rh (D) Negative. This is understood by all persons working with
 blood groups.

 Roughly
75% of Caucasians are Rh (D) Positive
 25% are Rh (D) Negative

There were no Rh Negatives among Asian,  Polynesian or Mealaneaian
 populations
but we ALWAYS tested these people in case they were of mixed blood and
did not know it. I think from the dim recesses of my mind I remember
the Basques having a higher percentage of Rh (D) negatives.
Unless a person was D negative we did not test the whole Allele of
which there are many combinations e.g cdE/cde.

Apart from transfusion treatment the main danger of antibody formation
in negative women during pregnancy has been overcome by the ability of
doctors now to give an antiserun which blocks the troublesome antigens
thus preventing antibody formation and eliminating the dreadful Rh
disease of pregnancy we used to see.

Wether there is a higher incidence of Rh negatives among Azoreans I do
 not know.
Certainly my own daughter is B Rh Negative.

this is very quick and i hope it is of some use.

Fra Giovanni Giocondo (c.1435–1515) was a Renaissance pioneer, accomplished

Countess Allagia Aldobrandeschi on Christmas Eve, 1513.

There is nothing I can give you which you have not got; but there is much,
very much, that, while I cannot give it, you can take. No Heaven can come to
us unless our hearts find rest in it today. Take Heaven! No peace lies in
the future which is not hidden in this present little instant. Take peace!

The gloom of the world is but a shadow. Behind it, yet within our reach, is
joy. There is radiance and glory in the darkness, could we but see; and to
see, we have only to look. I beseech you to look.

Life is so generous a giver, but we, judging its gifts by their covering,
cast them away as ugly or heavy or hard. Remove the covering, and you will
find beneath it a living splendor, woven of love, by wisdom, with power.
Welcome it, grasp it, and you touch the Angel's hand that brings it to you.
Everything we call a trial, a sorrow, or a duty: believe me, that angel's
 hand is
there; the gift is there, and the wonder of an overshadowing Presence. Our
joys, too: be not content with them as joys, they too conceal diviner gifts.

Life is so full of meaning and of purpose, so full of beauty—beneath its
covering—that you will find that earth but cloaks your heaven. Courage, then
to claim it: that is all! But courage you have; and the knowledge that we are
pilgrims together, wending through unknown country, home.

And so, at this Christmas time, I greet you; not quite as the world sends
greetings, but with profound esteem, and with the prayer that for you, now
and forever, the day breaks and the shadows flee away.

May the Christmas season bring joy to you and those you love.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Faja do Santo Christo

2009-09-10 Thread mikeg

It saddened me to read Nancy Jean Baptiste's account of her stay at
what my family found to be one of the most intriguing places we've
ever visited. When we spent the month of May on Sao Jorge, there were
few visitors to the faja, and the trashy environment non-existent
during our mid-week treks. We did hear summer brings a steady stream
of visitors, and party goers, a disturbing thought that Nancy Jean's
experiences seem to confirm.

Sao Jorge is home to my Azorean ancestors, and I may be biased. But we
found the island to be refreshingly natural, clean and hugely
welcoming. We had the privilege of staying in a wonderful roomy house
on a hillside overlooking Velas, the Atlantic and the volcano looming
on Pico beyond. I can put anyone interested in contact with the owner.

Whoever is interested in the book please email me Privately-Not On the

and try to find how to obtain them.

I did a search on Amazon.com and came up with not available. The
book is being sold in the Azores, I saw that online. I tried U. C.
Berkeley Bookstore as that is part of the hosting of this book
presentation, but it is not offered. The bookstore does have an Azores
Map and two travel books for the Azores. If interested,

or if the link does not work, Google:  U. C. Berkeley Bookstore.

I know nothing about the book, Azores: Nine Islands, One History. I
volunteered to get in touch with Dennis Borges, so that is what I will
 do if I can.

2009-01-18 Thread mikeg

Hello everyone,

My family and I will be spending month of May in Velas, Sao Jorge in
rented house. Any tips re exploration, restaurants, out-of-way places
etc. most welcomed. Will be happy to make contact with families and
friends on your behalf. We're excited! Also happy to share information
about house, which was recently completed on a hill overlooking town
and harbor. Knock out view of Pico volcano.

Don't know if I will do any research or not while there but it will be
fun to see where my grandmother's family lived--I can't say came from
as they came from Naples and mainland Portugal although their children
were born in the Azores.  Sometimes I am envious of those whose lines
go back many years in the Azores and mine go back to about 1850.

Find it interesting that to fly from Lisbon/Terceira/Ponta
Delgada/Lisbon the total fare is $915 and to fly from
London/Edinburgh/Dublin/London the total fare is $369!  Have not made
the Azores flight reservations yet but I am guessing they are not
going to come down anytime soon.

 Hi Yolanda,
 Do you live in Beira?
I went to Beira, Sao Jorge this summer and took pictures of the town and
church for my Mom because my ggrandfather Jose Pereira was from there as was
my other ggrandfather Jose Victorino Bettincourt. I haven't found their
baptismal records yet but anxiously wait for the Velas records to come on
 line.
I found Beira to be a beautiful village and the people very gracious. Should
 I post some pictures?
 Best regards,
 Nancy
