My maiden name is DeBettencourt and I have come to realize it's actually de Bettencourt through my years of research. I have seen many spellings on records like Cheri mentioned but keep the the original spelling and make a note of the other spellings in the tree records. I wonder if there is any connection here to my ancestors. I didn't realize there were different Portuguese dialects or what you call it. I've been using the Portuguese they offer on Busuu.com. Don't tell I've been learning the wrong Portuguese! Cheri, My dad passed away several years ago and he has no full siblings. His 3 half siblings who shared the same father are also deceased. Thank you both for your responses. I was heavily leaning towards the FTDNA from what I've learned. I am most interested in learning more of my dad's side (azorean) since the more I dig in my mom's side she gets hostile toward me. I uncovered that her greatgrandfather fathered children through a slave and we are products of that union. Unfortunately I am the oldest generation in my family but youngest of seven children. So I have time on my side. I've been unable to get six generations but want to go further. I am excited to learn where DNA testing will lead me!
