[AZORES-Genealogy] Gedmatch with Pico or Terceira ancestry
Antonio Faria introduced me to Gedmatch and I just recently started to check it out.I would be interested in comparing autosomal raw data with anyone else who has Pico or Terceira ancestors. For those who have tested with FTDNA you will have an F-number (the number is your kit number). If you have tested with Ancestry.com or 23andMe, or any other companies, you can also use Gedmatch to upload your raw data. I don't think you have an F-number, but maybe some other letter. In any case, you will be able to compare with others who have tested by a different company. So please use this email: terce...@dholmes.comAnd I'll send mine to you to compare. Please don't reply to this public message with your kit number, unless you don't mind the entire world will know it.I am particularly interested in those who match me or my father, and anyone who tested by a different company than FTDNA.Thanks,Doug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaTerceira Genealogist916-550-1618Website: www.dholmes.com -- For options, such as changing to List, Digest, Abridged, or No Mail (vacation) mode, log into your Google account and visit this group at http://groups.google.com/group/Azores. [AZORES-Genealogy] another new Family Finder DNA match for Pico ancestors
Hi Mary Ann,I see you got your results back yesterday from Family Finder and show as a match to my father and to me.For my father, you and he have 30 common matches between you. I suppose that means most are linked through Pico. You are projected as a 4th cousin to my father with 32.14 shared cM. It's the same 4th cousin estimate to me with 27.5 shared cM. I don't know if you know what that means yet. When you log into your account, you can go to FAQS and get definitions of these things. You and I have 17 common links between us. I don't know every one of them, but at least two have mostly Terceira ancestors. The closest on the list of 17 is Linda Marie Myhre who is my 4th cousin with common ancestors named Leal da Rosa from Piedade. She is a 3rd cousin, once removed to my father. Michael Gilfillian who is also connected to these same Leal da Rosa ancestors is my father's 4th cousin, once removed.Interestingly, when I click on common matches between my father and Michael Gilfillian, there are only 5 and one of them is you. When I do that for Linda Myhre, we have 13 in common and you are there, but Michael Gilfillian is not. I guess Michael and Linda just didn't get that same DNA, but are related by Leal da Rosa.It all gets pretty complicated. But when I look at your father's tree (I don't know your mother's Faial ancestry), there is no match to mine that we can prove. Having said that, we do have these surnames in common from Piedade:LealAzevedoFerreiraSilveiraValimDiasVieiraCorreiaCardosoGoncalvesGoulartBettencourtAvilaGomesSo one or more will surely link further back. And I think what is happening is that the little bits of DNA from these ancestors has combined into larger segments that trick you into thinking there is a closer connection than reality. I believe the closest true link to some common ancestors comes from 9 or 10 generations back for you which takes us to the middle 1600s and is making us something like 8th cousins. It takes 6 generations to reach there for my father, so we'd maybe be 7th or 8th cousins, once removed.Of course, there is always a decent chance there is a closer link to your mother's side, in case you know a little of her ancestry from Faial. All I know is Dutra from Faial. One more thing. Aside from you as our most recent DNA match, our second most recent is the first cousin to Marie (Marshall) Pleasant. Her name is Mary Jane Fuchs. You also match her. I don't know if your husband's Marshall name is originally Machado from Pico, but if so, she could be a close cousin to Marie Pleasant, too. I am cc'ing Marie so she can check into this more. She has been successfully getting her cousins to test and is finding lots of great things this way. Marie's link is mostly to Lajes do Pico but has a problematic "exposto" in Faial in the late 1800s that could be showing up in these DNA findings.Doug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaTerceira Genealogist916-550-1618Website: www.dholmes.com -- For options, such as changing to List, Digest, Abridged, or No Mail (vacation) mode, log into your Google account and visit this group at http://groups.google.com/group/Azores. RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Families in Santa Barbara - Terceira: Machado Velho, Ferreira da Costa, Mendes, Cardozo da Rocha, Cardoso da Rocha, Cardoso Velho
Ola Roberto,You have lots of interesting questions.I do my research in all these freguesias and know all these families. And we are related in many ways, which I can say without even looking. Of course by Rocha, but probably in many other ways, though probably also remotely. One thing I can mention is that anyone can obtain a copy of the obitos from the registo civil.I would like to encourage you to get the Family Finder DNA test. It would be very interesting to see if the paper trails we can use to prove our connections are also backed up by DNA evidence. If you don't know what I'm talking about, I wrote about it on my website here: http://www.dholmes.com/dna.htmlThe link you mentioned sounds interesting. I'll have to check that out.Atenciosamente,Doug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaTerceira Genealogist916-550-1618Website: www.dholmes.com Original Message Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Families in Santa Barbara - Terceira: Machado Velho, Ferreira da Costa, Mendes, Cardozo da Rocha, Cardoso da Rocha, Cardoso Velho From: Roberto Machado Velho <rve...@gmail.com> Date: Sat, April 26, 2014 2:39 am To: azores@googlegroups.com Hello,I am searching for the Families Machado Velho, Mendes, Ferreira da Costa, Cardozo da Rocha, Cardoso da Rocha and Cardoso Velho in the old Parish of Santa Barbara - what is today Serreta, Doze Ribeiras, Santa Barbara and Cinco Ribeiras.(Estou procurando/a procurar pelas Familias Machado Velho, Mendes, Ferreira da Costa, Cardozo da Rocha, Cardoso da Rocha e Cardoso Velho na antiga Freguesia/Paroquia de Santa Barbara - ilha terceira - no que hoje sao as freguesias de Serreta, Doze Ribeiras, Santa Barbara e Cinco Ribeiras). My newer information is the death of the mother of my great-grandfather in Canada De Nossa Senhora d'Ajuda, Santa Barbara, in 1909.In 1875 she was living in Rua dos Pocos - Santa Barbara, with her son Antonio Machado Velho - my greatgrandfather - where all this research started.I have a note in a Marriage Certificate telling about the death of her daugther in 1945 - but this is not available on internet. My oldest information is related to all the families I quoted before and today I have information on the marriages - 4 of them - happening in between 1781 and 1794:- Luiz Ignacio Mendes and Maria Josefa - 1781- Francisco Machado Velho and Francisca Mariana - 1782- Raimundo Ferreira da Costa and Maria Roza - 1794- Sebastiao Jose da Costa and Anna Joaquina - 1793.I also know that the sons of Raimundo and Sebastiao were connected in 4th degree in blood.Does anyone recognize someone you have records or had seen before on your researches ?Also would like to ask:- Do you know if any person can get a death certificate just going to the Conservatoria ? I want to try to ask that one of 1945 quoted on top. Do you know to which one I would to address in Terceira ? One in Santa Barbara or in Angra do Heroismo ?- Do you know if all the archives of the Church in Santa Barbara are available on the Cultura Azores website ? Is there any other kind of archives that could provide information about Santa Barbara, like Certificates of Properties - houses or some kind of School, or any other thing was being recorded in archives ?- I tried to find the Archives in Universidade do Minho, that some people quoted in the group, but I cannot find archives for Terceira. Are there any ?- Are there any other archives for Terceira or the region of Santa Barbara that I could look for ?- I have used the "Rois/Confessados" list available in Cultura Azores for Santa Barbara - and that gave me a lot of information. I am thinking of turning that list (mainly a Census of all Santa Barbara made by the priest in 1875) in a listed - searchable - pdf file. Does anyone has interest on that ? Do you know where I could publish that so people could use it ? Cultura Azores receives submissions ?- Does anyone has a text or pdf searchable version of the index of Marriages available to Santa Barbara ? It is not possible search names in the images available. I started to decompose that set of marriages in families, in case someone has interest.- I believed that the name Machado Velho disappeared in Santa Barbara because my great-grandfather went to Brazil, his brother died early without sons/daughters and their 2 other sisters just either did not get married or changed their surnames to the ones of their husbands. Do you know any way I could track the sisters ? I could not find a marriage certificate to them in the index of Santa Barbara - one is called Angelica (and there is just one Angelica, not the one I am searching) and the other one Maria (as you know, 40% of the women getting married by that time).- Anyone knows if people asking for passports in Terceira would have them issued also in Terceira ? And then the boats to Brazil and United States were leaving Terceira or some other Island nearby ?- Does anyone has a map that tell the names of str
[AZORES-Genealogy] Bishop Myron Cotta
I just read in the latest issue of O Progresso (by the Portuguese Historical Society of Sacramento) about the new Bishop Myron Cotta.Any chance that someone knows about his link to the Azores? It says his grandparents were immigrants and I assume they were from Terceira, since that's where most named Cotta are from (now spelled as Cota).I would like to find my own link to his family, since I have lots of Cota ancestors from Terceira.Obrigado,Doug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaTerceira Genealogist916-550-1618Website: www.dholmes.com -- For options, such as changing to List, Digest, Abridged, or No Mail (vacation) mode, log into your Google account and visit this group at http://groups.google.com/group/Azores. Interesting. I didn't know about this branch in Graciosa.Did you ever happen to look into DNA testing?I wrote about it here and maybe it will help you decide:www.dholmes.com/dna.htmlSo it seems to me you have a branch of ancestors from Terceira, or maybe these are just your in-laws?Doug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaTerceira Genealogist916-550-1618Website: www.dholmes.com Original Message Subject: Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Verissimo Family From: max leite <maxleite@gmail.com> Date: Mon, March 31, 2014 2:15 pm To: azores@googlegroups.com Cc: terce...@dholmes.com are they related to the Verissimo-leite in graciosa VerissimoOn Monday, January 7, 2013 7:42:56 PM UTC-5, Doug da Rocha Holmes wrote:Dan,I know this Terceira family.Contact me here if interested:terc...@dholmes.comDoug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaPico Genealogist916-550-1618www.dholmes.com Original Message Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Verissimo Family From: Dan Goodman <danielbry...@gmail.com> Date: Mon, January 07, 2013 4:13 pm To: Azores Genealogy <azo...@googlegroups.com> Looking for information about the Verissimo family. [AZORES-Genealogy] Just joined and planning to visit Pico and Terceira

Thread
Franz Joseph Martin (great grandson of Manuel S A Martins from Pico and Josephine M Soares from Terceira)
Dear all, I just joined this as I am planning to travel to Azores next year with my family to visit the place of our Martins-Soares (Pico) and Martins- Souza (Terceira) ancestors My great-grandparents were: - Manuel S A Martins born in Pico, 1883 (son of Jose S A Martins and Maria C De Souza) - Josephine (Josepha or Josefa) M Soares born in Terceira 1885 (daughter of Jose M Soares and Anna M Soares) Both emigrated from the Azores Islands (dates unknown) to Tauton in Boston, Massachussets and married on 18.Jan.1908. My grandfather was Joseph Martin (they removed the "s"), born in Tauton, Massachussets, USA on 10.11.1910. He died in 2007 He met my grandmother (Noemi Gonzalez in Guanacaste, Costa Rica) and my dad, Joseph M. Martin was born in Puntarenas, Costa Rica on Jan. 1944. I was born in San Jose, Costa Rica in 1967. I have fours kids born (three born in San Jose, Costa Rica and one born in Santiago, Chile). We now live in Rome, Italy. As you can see, we have been moving during generations, so I would like to know more about this islands. It seems my grandfather has been the only one in the family having visited our ancestor's place. Would it be difficult to find their record to rebuild our family tree back from the names of my great-grandparents. Thanks for any advice/orientation you can provide.
