Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Beginning My Search
Just in case you still use this email address from 8 years ago, I think I have found the connection to show that your great great grandfather Francisco P. Mello and my great grandfather Ventura P. Mello were brothers. Please respond if you would like to compare notes. You need to find what village in Sao Miguel they are from. It looks like they settled in the Cambridge, Ma. area from your tree. I found an immigration record in 1916 for a Ventura P Mello coming to join his brother Francisco P Mello at 2360 Massachusetts Ave., N. Cambridge, MA. If this is his brother, they were born in Rabo de Peixe, small village on the north coast of Sao Miguel in Ribeira Grande. You can search the microfilms for Rabo de Peixe for Francisco P(Pacheco?) Mello's brith around 1871. The marriage in the 1890's are not on film yet. Good luck. They immigrated from Sao Miguel, Azores, Portugal around 1902/1903. They brought at least 1 child, my great grandfather, Edward P. Mello with them to Massachusetts. I found no passenger list, simply going off a census form for the arrival date. Great great grandfather - Frank P. Mello born around 1871 in Portugal. Great great grandmother - Mary Souza born around 1878 in Portugal. Great grandfather - Edward P. Mello born in Sao Miguel, Azores, Portugal in 1897. Thanks for any feedback. Edward, Emigration OUT of the Azores for the port of Ponta Delgada for the years 1902 & 1903 are online at the Centro de Conhecimento dos Acores (Center for Knowledge of the Azores) or CCA Web site: http://pg.azores.gov.pt/drac/cca/ig/ Click "Passaportes" on the right. Click "Ponta Delgada" on the next screen. Click 1900-1902 on the next screen. Do not use Firefox (Mozilla) to access this web site. It stops working part of the way through. You're going to have to randomly click around until you find the beginning of the 1902 emigration. Look for a Francisco and Maria de Mello traveling together with a child, Eduardo of the right ages. The far right side will say their destination (may say Mass or may give the specific location in Mass). Once you've found a family of a Francisco, Maria, and small Eduardo, copy the URL and post it and someone here will tell you want the rest of the document says. There is no index. You have to hunt through the records to find their emigration out of the Azores. But the 1902-1903 lists will tell you which freguesia (village) that your family is from.
