Double first cousins share BOTH sets of grandparents in common. You get a brother and sister from one family marrying the sister and brother from the other family. I've use Desi Arnaz Lucille Ball for one family and John F. Kennedy and Jackie Bouvier Onassis as the other family. Their kids marry each other and we'll pretend they have you and me. Change my gender to suit your needs on the attached chart. (PDF - I think most people can view this). Gail E, Oh, and you married your first cousin? Then you totally understand the double first cousin thing! When I had it first explained to me, it didn't make complete sense. Then after it happened in my family it made sense. It was hard to understand or visualize the having BOTH grandparents in common. I think Grandmother Theresa De Mello married Manuel Freitas Her brother Manuel de Mello married Manuel Freitas sister, Maria Freitas. It confuses people, especially the cousins. de Mello's are from Vila Franca. The Freitas are from Fayal, Madeira. Try not only brothers marrying sisters but the sisters' 2 maternal uncles married their husbands' sisters. Double first cousins and first cousin and cousins once removed all in one family. Makes for interesting family reunions.
