Re: Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] General Questions about Passports
If you are researching the USA - in the South circa Civil War, you get tired of hearing the courthouse burned down and no records are available. One county courthouse burned down 4 times!! Some vets who try to obtain a copy of the DD214 have had to deal with the records being destroyed, if memory serves me correctly, by water damage.and so it goes. Also, I tried to get records for who was in WWI and they also were not available. "E" -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. There's a gap in the records (1884-1894) because they are missing. American ones have missing gaps too :( Cheri Mello Listowner, Azores-Gen Researching: Vila Franca, Ponta Garca, Ribeira Quente, Ribeira das Tainhas, Achada -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] General Questions about Passports
Lester, I don't know that someone else could leave under someone else's name. Only the port of Ponta Delgada on Sao Miguel is online at this time. You don't state where your ancestors were from. They could have sailed out of Angra on Terceira or out of Horta on Faial. RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] General Questions about Passports
Hi Lester, Passports were required to travel (leave) the Acores. Only the ones from Sao Miguel are on line. I would not assume he left by other means It could be the name is wrong or perhaps the writing was bad and you missed it. If you found his brothers then you know the council and village he came from I would search the columns for everyone that came from that village. Can you determine his arrival date in the US? If you can then I would go to the passport records and start searching back from that date it most likely is within a week of leaving the Acores. I do remember two men that applied with my great grandfather the same day. All their names were together and they were all from the same village. The ship sailed a week later. When the ship arrived in NY only my Great grandfather and one of them was on the ship. The other man must have had second thoughts about leaving.
