JoElayne; Thank you for this. I have FTM 2012 and it does let me show
blended families but; I'm not familiar with what you mention below. Could
you give me step by step directions? Can I go back after the 2nd spouse has
been entered and do something to indicate on the step-parent's "page" that
there are step-children? Thanks, Sam in CA

Actually, as far as I know as a user of FTM, it has a spot you can click to
add a 2nd, 3rd, or more spouses and you can add children to that couple but;
it does not have a place for a child to have multiple parents other than the

Cheri, you're correct; FTM will allow for multiple marriages. It won't show
actively if you are looking at the marriage relationship of the second spouse,
but it is there and will show in reports that are printed.

The bottom portion will show something similar to a button indicating that one
of the two people on the screen has had more than one marriage/spouse.

The Master Genealogist (TMG) allows for more than 2 parents. It will
display them all.

I believe RootsMagic does as well. I have a genealogy software lecture and
I use my friend's family because of the extra parent in there.

I think FTM did allow it too, but I can't recall off the top of my head.

I just figured out what is the question.

In families where parents remarry, children have always have more than
two parents. Adopted children also have more than two parents.
According to what two professional genealogical organizations told me,
good software presents reality in that situation. As far as I know,
only two programs display all the parents and all the step siblings; PAF
and Legacy. Possibly Rootsmagic too but I think its strength is its
reports are pretty.

My genealogy software (The Master Genealogist - TMG) allows for more than 2
parents. I have to set the biological parents and I can chose adoptive
parents or whatever else to add more that 2 parents. These alternate
parents appear in the Events section of an ancestor.

In my opinion, you only record birth parents. There is a note section in
most software to enter data such as adoptions, multiple marriages with
no children, or any other type of data that a individual thinks is
pertinent. One of my great grand mothers was placed in the wheel of the
church. Her baptismos record listed Mai and Pai unknown. Her marriage
record show her surname as Mendes. The Mendes raises her and were listed
as her parents. I also have family members with out having any
children. I list the first marriage in the software, any subsequent
marriages without children, I enter the data in Note section.
