Hi Maria,

Do you have an approximate time frame/year of when Domingos left S.Miguel
for the USA and if he went alone or with family? I'm thinking it might be
easier to find his parish through the passports available on the CCA site.

 Dear Listers,

I'm just hoping someone might have a microfilm from Sao Miguel at the FHC
 from a parish I haven't researched.

Domingos Moniz Machado was born in Sao Miguel 8 February 1874. I've
searched the freguesias (parishes of: Apostolo de Sao Pedro, Sao Jose and
most recently Sao Sebastao (Matrix). I was so sure he would be in Sao
Sebastao but was very disappointed when I didn't find him there

Now, I ask you where do I go next? I know he had a brother named Clement
(Clemencio? sp?) who changed his last name to Marshall. They went to
Boston. I need to find their parents or syblings to do any more research on
this line and hope someone can help me.

Maybe someone has a microfilm on file from any parish in Sao Miguel and
could see if he was in that parish. please?

His parents were Emilia Moniz and Jacintho Machado

Any help would be heavenly Thanks

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Machado, Domingos Moniz

2010-03-18 Thread Maria Lima
Hi Jackie. So glad to hear back fm u.

Immigration 1885.

Have had that thought and searched but can't find him. He is a mystery to
us

He was my husband's maternal grandfather. My mother in law told us he died
when she was 6 and that he was a dentist and was rasied or educated by the
Jesuits. Now this makes sense because when I sent to Tufts University for
the requirements to get into dental school, a person had to have a good
command of the English language and studied prep college courses. He
graduated in 3 yrs in 1908. I actually found a business card of his with
the address of his office on 174 Hanover Street downtown. I even went on
Google Earth to see where it is today.

He made a trip to the Azores and Portugal 31 May 1910 and I have a ton of
postcards that he sent back to his wife and oldest son, a child at the
time. They were living at 70 Burrell Street.

I noticed his his mother, Emily (probably Emilia) lived at 70 Burrell back
when she died in 1905. When I received her death certificate it listed
names of her parents as Joao Moniz and Maria Machado.  Now, that's strange;
why was her mother's name Machado and that's the name of the family from
then on. I I noticed that Domingos always signed everything I've seen as
Domingos *MONIZ *MACHADO. I believe he was proud of his name. His
brother, Clement, changed his name to Marshall. All of Clem's children were
Marshall's.

My mother in law told me once there were 5 brothers and a girl. Other than
Clem I cannot find anyone of them living together or close by in the
census.

Thank you so much for your ideas. I am hoping on Saturday, we will be
blessed and you will find him. Thank you so much.

Warm regards,

Maria Elena

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Machado, Domingos Moniz

2010-03-18 Thread Gayle Machado
Maria,

If I might chime in on the name usage. How the name gets changed is a
cultural issue. An example, one of my professors in college was named Nguyen
Uy. In Vietnam, the surname appears first, and the given name last. When he
immigrated, the authorities changed his surname from Nguyen to Uy. I¹m sure
they didn¹t realize it. I suspect the family was so happy to be here (after
the fall of Saigon) that they didn¹t fuss about it. With my grandmother. Her
father was Jose Rodrigues de Medeiros and mother was Josepha Clara Garcia.
The family¹s surname became simply Medeiros here in the states, yet if you
look at my great grandfather¹s lineage, its Rodrigues de Medeiros (for
several generations), Rodrigues de Serpa (for several generations) and
eventually just Rodrigues.

As ³they² say: It is what it is.

Gayle

I'd research a church to the right and then to the left of those churches of
Ponta Delgada. Or maybe go back to the 3 parishes of Ponta Delgada and look
very, very carefully at the page numbers. Are any pages missing?

Shirley Allegre and I had this problem. Couldn't find the marriage in the
church. We searched parishes to the right and left of the church in
question. Couldn't find them. Upon close examination, we noticed the pages
jumped from page P to page W. They must have fallen out of the book years
ago. When we went to the Azores together, we asked for that book and we
looked at it. It was tightly bound and there were no loose pages. We
checked the back of the book for loose pages that may have been placed back
there and didn't see any. So we figured the lost pages became kindling one
very cold, damp night.

Sad, sad, sad.
