Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Passports for São Jorge

2017-05-19 Thread Cheri Mello
Usually they left from their home port. But if the next boat to America was
from a different port and they had to get to America, they went to the that
port and caught the next boat out.

Antone is not an anglicized version of Antonio. It's a phonetic spelling of
what was heard. The anglicization of Antonio would be Anthony, which would
be the literal translation. The anglicization of Perreira was Perry.
Hope that helps! Cheri

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Passports for São Jorge

2017-05-19 Thread Rosemarie Capodicci
They generally went to Terceira but I have found them in Horta also. I
would start with the Angra, Terceira passports and if you don't find them
there look in Horta's. Remember that some men just took a little boat out
to the steamer or sailboat to avoid being drafted into the service so they
didn't get a passport! Also if they were whalers, I've not seen them listed
anywhere either.
