Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Photography Studios in Acores
I have a photograph of my GGG Grandfather, Jorge Agustus Nesbitt, taken in S Miguel in 1863 - on the back it says Rodrigues Photographs S Miguel. I looked at the CCA link and found that a photographer named Marcellin Turpin worked from the the guesthouse of João António Rodrigues, and there was also a photgrapher named Nesbitt in Ponta Delgarda. That was a very interesting discovery for me. I don't know why a Nesbitt would go to another studio unless Jorge was the photographer himself. RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Photography Studios in Acores
Hi all ... There is a bit about him on the CCA website (see link below) ... I google translated the bit about him in case you cannot read Portuguese ... Apparently according to another source he owned the 1st Photography House in Sso Miguel ... One of the best known photographers São Miguel was António José Raposo, who has been taught by photographer Reckell. In 1870, it was already established in the R. da Esperanca, 19 and announced that undertook to take better pictures than any photographer who had passed through the city. Communicated also had in his possession the clichés of its predecessor in the same house, Reckell, by which drew reproductions. It is very likely that some older photos attributed to António José Raposo are after all reproductions of the work of his master. António Raposo, owner of Artistic Photographia, taught the art to anyone for $ 300 000 reis, and its working methods perfected with an American named E. C. Cornell, who settled for a time in his studio. Both Pacheco António Raposo Toste and photographed Antero de Quental in 1887. http://www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt/aia/fotografia/Historia.aspx Hop this helps. Thanks ... Also on the back there are angels, and what looks almost like a coat of arms in green and gold. 2. Severini Joao D'Avellar, (Angra ao Heroism) 40 Rus De Santo Espirito. 3. Photographis Artistica de A.J. Raposo, Rus de Esperanca 19, S. Miguel, Acores. The only hint I see is S. Miguel - - which is huge for me, as I'm still trying to determine which island(s) to research. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! I also have many from photographers in Boston and Quincy, MA - - have written to the MA Historical Society for assistance with these. Thanks. [AZORES-Genealogy] Photography Studios in Acores
Hi all. I'm looking for suggestions. I have several very old family photos which were taken in The Azores. I'm looking for more information about the photos. Photographer's name, etc are as follows: 1.Photographia Artistica, Rua Esperanca - No. 19 - S. Miguel, Acores. Comment printed on back also says conservam se as duche,. I think.
