Religous influences in Portugal. Perhaps some one will address your
question, but you may also find the explanation in the attached link, which
in my opinion, is not quite right but it does drive the idea home "A Guide

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Question re:Portuguese surname traditions, going back to my children's great-grandfather.

2019-06-30 Thread Cheri Mello
Hi Josephine,

I think I have a private email from you to answer as well. You emailed me
when I was at the Portuguese Genealogical Conference and Research Trip in
Salt Lake City. I'm home now and playing catch up in the online world as
well as my own world! LOL

You'll eventually get used to this changing of surnames at a whim type
thing.

Looks like your Jacintho Miguel de Medeiros and wife Antonia Hermina do
Rego was probably Jacintho Miguel de Medeiros over there and may have been
just Jacintho Miguel, but due to other Jacintho Miguels, tacked on Medeiros
to differentiate himself. More research will be needed. You'll also likely
find the Medeiros somewhere back in his tree. Jacintho is the old spelling
for what is now spelled Jacinto. I'm inclined to say that "Jachinto" was a
typo or someone transposing letters.

Antonia Hermina (and it may be Ermina, too), was most likely her name.
Women didn't have surnames in that time period, but she somehow knew to
state her family name of Rego so you are lucky! Because she was female, you
do see them matching the surname to her gender in that time period, hence,
the Rega.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Question re:Portuguese surname traditions, going back to my children's great-grandfather.

2019-06-30 Thread JOSEPHINE MIGUEL
Hello Cheri,I thank you for your replies to my son, Don Miguel, with his
question regarding paternal great-grandparents.  It shed valuable light and
before now, unknown, information.  Going forward from Passport Registrations
and Portuguese Immigrants to Hawaii, Jacintho Miguel de Medeiros and wife
Antonia Hermina do Rego immigrated to Hawaii in1882.  Through Ancestry.com I
found a City Directory (1822-1989) listing Jacintho Miguel at gen store Laniwai
nr Cooke (I believe his employment).  All six of their children born in Hawaii,
surname Miguel.Jachinto (another misspelling) Miguel on California Passenger
List arriving San Francisco 24 May 1910; son Manuel Miguel on same Passenger
List.  Antoia Miguel De Medeiros on California Passenger List arriving San
Francisco one week later, 31 May 1910.Confused with surname Miguel because of
"de Medeiros" and "do Rego".  Also, saw Antonia Rega listed, which I then
thought was her maiden name. Thanks, Josephine Miguel

Hi Josephine,To do research, you need a name, a date, and a place. You have a
date of 1882 and a place of Hawaii, yet no name. You need to state what you
know about the immigrant ancestor, including all names that you have found. We
are unable to help you otherwise. Thanks, Cheri

2019-06-29 Thread jomig...@sbcglobal.net
Their great-grandfather sailed from the Azores under a name different from
the name used after immigrating to Hawaii in 1882.
Any input or comments to help give a clearer understanding would be greatly
appreciated.
