Judi,

The book came from Santa Maria after a kind listmember, a while back,
told me about it and I was able to have a friend help me obtain a
copy. I will be in the Azores (not Santa Maria) and will see if/how
one can get a copy today. I don't exactly remember, but I think the
cost was $15/20. I do not have the book - I sent it to my sister's
daughter in law and she gave it to her parents. If I can figure out
the process, I will try to email the list while on the islands. I am
not taking my laptop this time.

I have a couple of other genealogy books I am interested in buying
while I am in Lisbon.

Dear "E" and John,

Thanks so much for the input. There are a few errors, but this is my family.
I have them back 3 more generations before Manuel Cabral. Did you get this
from George? Is this part of your family? If so, I can give you the
corrections.

"E" I haven't traced them back to Santa Maria yet, but I'm sure that's were
they came from. Any idea where I might get a copy of that book?

I seem to remember that it was UNCOMMON to jump ship. I can't remember which
book it was in...one or the other that I posted. If I have time before I leave

I missed your earlier post. At what date did it become likely that someone
would have jumped ship in Massachsuetts or Connecticut, and when aer the

I did see where you just said people didn't jump ship.

Can I ask specifically why not? What kept them from jumping ship? When they
did jump ship, what motivated that?

Reason I"m asking is I've got an ancestor who allegedly jumped ship. This
isn't the only possible explanation of where he came from.

2009-03-31 Thread Alvin Goularte
Dad and his friend also from Calheta, Sao Jorge, were on the road to California
by train as soon as possible.  His friend came as a passenger and did have the
resources to support himself.  My father earned a little bit of money on the
boat which paid for the train.  He never registered or was required to until
WWII,  He registered for the draft and was told that as a dairyman he would be
classified under Essential Occupation and most likely never be called.  Later
Aliens were required to register which he did.  The question of how he got here
never came up, but most of his life he had this fear that he may get caught and
get deported as  an illegal alien. Dad was 16 and he had a job just a few days
after arriving in California milking cows (by hand) for an immigrant family
from Denmark.

Hi All - My great grandfather, Antonio Nunes, immigrated from the island of
Pico in 1860.  He was born in Sao Matteus in 1840.  I am trying to find out his
date and port of entry.  He lived in San Benito County in CA after his death,
so I have no idea where he came into the UW in 1860.  Also, do you have any
idea on how long the trip took and average cost per person?  I am assuming many
immigrants were farmers or laborers without a lot of money, so do you think
most families saved up the cost of the passage in order to give their children
the chance to immigrate?

Thank you for any information or advice on how to research this.

I guess it's easy to see I was raised in Texas! Makes so many of those old
stories suspect.

Mom also tells the story that he spent time in white slavery before being given
his freedom and that he used to love the kids to look through his hair for
bugs. She was quick to assure me that he just liked to have his hair played
withbut you know those ships were really nasty and I'm sure full of
vermin!

I got a chuckle out of this! SFSmith is correct- Nantucket is 30 miles off the
coast of Massachusetts. That'd be quite a walk (swim).

For what it's worth, I do believe that Nantucket has an extensive Azorean info

There is no way anyone could walk from Nantucket to New Bedford. Nantucket is
an island in the middle of the ocean. He must have taken some kind of boat.

Greetings,

This must have been a common practice. My GGrandfather, Jose Pereira, also

never met.he was from Sao Jorge...she was from Pico and they had 12
children. He spent the next 50 years rolling cigars for a livinghe'd
learned the trade when the ship was in Brazil for a couple of months. I have

Jumping ship is in one of these books below. I wrote about this in my
how-to guide:

"Jumping ship" refers to a crew member entering the U.S. without a document.
If your ancestor "jumped ship" you will want to check crew lists for Boston
(1917 - 1943), New Bedford (1917- 1943), New York (1897 -1957) and others.
The lists vary in information given.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Advice - Information on Immigration From Azores to US

2009-03-31 Thread Judi Phillips

Al,

I believe my grandfather did the same thing in 1900. Is there anywhere I can
find out? Would they have had to register with the Portuguese Embassy in New
Bedford? Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks

My father came in about 1920 by getting hired as a crewman on the boat and then
jumping ship in New Bedford, Mass.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Advice - Information on Immigration From Azores to US

2009-03-28 Thread Cheri Mello
Hi C. Colbert,

I have a hunch that being from Pico (where whaling was big) and coming to
America in 1860, he probably would have come in through the east coast.
Note that I said probably.

I think in the 1860s it probably took about a month to get to America. I
don't think steamships (S.S. Name of Ship) were being used in the 1860s. I
think it was the "barks" (I'm not sure that's how you spell it though).
It's been a while since I've read about ships.

As you do more research, you'll eventually find the cost for a passenger.
Once you find it, you can run the cost through a historical economic
calculator. I like "Measuring Worth" from EH.net (Economic History
Services) at:
http://www.measuringworth.com/uscompare/ If you type in 1860, $5 and 2007,
you find out that $5 was anywhere between $100 - $800 depending on the
criteria used.

Most families had to save up to emigrate out of the islands.

I'm confused by your sentence where you state that in lived in CA after his
death. (Brain going faster than the fingers can type!) You need to start
with his death, obtaining his death certificate (if it exists) and
obituaries. You'll need to use U.S. census to trace him and put him in a
particular place at a particular time. You'll have to find his marriage and
his kids' births and baptisms. You may trace his kids forwards too, as they
may state at some point where in Pico their father came from.

For an entire "how to" on tracing your ancestor, look on the Azores Genweb
here: http://homepage.mac.com/kmacardoza/Genealogy/HowTo.html

It's a good site to bookmark if you are new to Portuguese research.

It took me 4 years and 25 documents before I found the info on my
ancestors. And I didn't do it by tracing my great-grandfather. I found the
info by tracing his wife, who left the better paper trail.
