Paul,

I have info on this line. Quiteria de Medeiros was daughter of Manuel de
Medeiros ou Barbosa and Anna de Pimentel (my 8th Direct Ancestors) from
Faial da Terra and this family can be traced way back to the Early ages of
Portugal's nobility.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Faial de Terra or Ilha Faial?

2015-09-07 Thread Dano
You're referencing a marriage that occurred in Nossa Senhora Mae de Deus,
Povoacao. Everything in this record refers to the village of Povoacao, on
the island of Sao Miguel; The "Ermida" referred to is Nossa Senhora da
Penha da Franca, located in Agua Retorta, Povoacao - suffragenea
(subordinate) to the parish of Nossa Senhora da Graca, in Faial da Terra,
Povoacao. If you're not familiar with the places you will be researching,
it would be helpful to get a map of the area for reference.

JR,

I think this may be Manuel Raposo (c. 1839) and Maria Isabel ou Helena de
Medeiros ( 5SEP1837) which married in Faial da Terra in 8Nov1862. Manuel
Raposo's mother had Resendes ou Pereira as last name therefore he might
have been Manuel Raposo de Resendes.

There is a Joseph Francis b. abt 1832 on the Bark Halifax, September

Looks like it might be the same person going back and forth a couple
of times. Could be him. My grandfather also came through Halifax
once when he sold one of his ship's overseas and was returning home so
  don't let that throw you.

In the 1860 census, there is a Joseph Francis b. abt. 1831, Fayal ,
mariner, living on Nantucket Island. (There is something written
after his name but I do not know what it means). There is also a John

There's a Joseph Francis b. abt. 1833 living in Calaveras County CA.

There's another Joseph Francis b. abt. 1832, mariner, living in

In 1870 census, your Joseph Francis with wife Amelia are living in

I found a Joseph Francis b. abt. 1832 who came to the US June 25, 1852
on the schooner Waldron Holmes sailing from Fayal to Boston. It says
he is a mariner. There is also a Manuel Francis on this ship.

There is a Joseph Francis b. abt. 1832 also on the schooner Abby
Forest who came to the US August 1854, seaman, sailing from the Azores
to Boston. Actually there are 2 Joseph Francis on this ship but he is
 6 years older.

There is a Joseph Francis b. abt 1832 on the Bark Halifax, September
1859, sailing from Halifax to Boston, mariner, b. in Portugal

There is also a John
and Angelica Francis from Fayal living 3 doors down.

There's a Joseph Francis b. abt. 1833 living in Calaveras County CA.

There's another Joseph Francis b. abt. 1832, mariner, living in
Boston, but he is married with a child.

In 1870 census, your Joseph Francis with wife Amelia are living in
Yreka, CA both b. Western Island with children Mary 4, b. CA, Joseph
1, b. CA so Amelia must have come to the US before 1871. Living with
them is a Joseph Silva 30 also a miner b. Western Islands.

 Hope this helps.

Maybe Brio was her maiden name? My grandmother kept her maiden name
of DaCosta until she came to the US where they gave her my
grandfathers name of Vargas. Hope this helps!

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: FAIAL

2009-04-01 Thread bellemarco
Marek,

I think this is him:

The 1900 cenus has him listed as Joseph Francis and and wife Amelia living
in Yreka. It says he was born Dec. 1830, married 41 years, born Portugal,
came to US in 1852 and is a Naturalized citizen, and a miner.
Wife: Amelia b. March 1841, 9 children born 7 living, came to US 1871
ch: Amelia b. May 1882 in Portugal, came to US 1871 (this obviously is a
mistake by the census taker-she wasn't born yet!)
Joseph b. Jan 1884 CA
Mary b. Oct. 1885 CA
Clara b. Mar. 1887 CA
Johann b. Sep. 1888
Manuel b. Nov. 1890 CA
Henry b. Aug. 1893 CA

You might try and obtain his CA naturalization records. Will be hard to
find on ship's manifest as the year is very early and we do not know where
he entered the US and records are not so great for that timeframe.
Guessing, he came over on a whaler?
