[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: New Bedford Churches

2009-01-12 Thread nancy jean baptiste

Hi Patricia,
Thanks so much for the link to St. Lawrence. What a beautiful church..I
like envisioning my ancestors and their rituals occurring in these churches so
many years ago!
Are your Pereiras from New England? We do know that Joseph Perry/Jose Pereira
was from Sao Jorge. Beira is what we were told. I anxiously await the CCA
records for Beira becoming available. Now that I know his parents were Antonio
Pereira and Zabina de Jesus I will be able to find his Baptism and perhaps
names of other siblings. We think he had a brother Frank Perry.
Jose was taken from the dock at Velas when he was 12 and used as a cabin boy.
He was eventually sold into white slavery and ended up in England as a stable
worker for a Duke? (so the story goes)..he was eventually given his
freedom and a Hamilton watch that my brother still has. He went to the gold
rushI wish I could find his ship records coming into Ca. He left by ship,
spent some time in Brazil and learned the trade of cigarmaker, left there and
the story goes that he jumped ship off the Mass. coast and walked to New
Bedford and found relatives who sent for a bride for him. She was from Pico,
Rosa Luiza, they had 12 childrenall in New Bedford. Can't find her either!
Good luck with your elusive Aunt...I bet lots of genealogists like
mysteries since the search for our ancestors is an on going one!
Kind regards,
Nancy

Hi Nancy,

I checked my hard copy of the New Bedford phone directory. St.
Lawrence Church is not listed in the yellow pages with other churches,
but I did find one number for it listed in the white pages section.
I hope this number is different from the one you have.

Good luck with your research.

2009-01-09 Thread Cheri Mello
Nancy,

The church will send you a fill in the blank certificate that they would
hand to a bride and groom today. It will say that the bride married the
groom by the priest on this date and the witnesses were. If you want to
know if the village was recorded in the marriage book, you could ask if that
information was noted in the marriage book and if so, you need to ask for a
xerox copy from the book and if that is not possible, a typed transcription
that also includes any margin notes. Tell them that you are sending a
donation to the church and then do it (it helps the rest of us
genealogists).

2009-01-09 Thread nancy jean baptiste

Thanks Cheri,
The woman there understood that I was looking for the villages and parents
names. I asked her if there was a fee and she said the priest would not let
them charge but that they would accept a donation and told me how to make my
check. I remembered Elaine saying that when she helped me with Antonio. Now
though I'm worried that perhaps I should call her back and reiterate that I'd
like a copy.and side notes!
Always helps to be extra clear!
Thanks again,

2009-01-09 Thread nancy jean baptiste

Hi Cheri,
Well after your note I decided I'd call and clarify things. The priest, Father
Sullivan answered the phone and after explaining everything he told me he'd
look it up right then and call me back! So.he just called...found the
record and he said that that far back 1866 they didn't put down all the info
like they began doing later. It had my ggrandparents names but not their
parents or villages. Anyway, he's sending me a copy of it and suggested I get a
copy from the state. The civil record that I found on NEGHS was how I found the
date of the marraige and the fact that Josephs father was Antone Pereira and
his mother Zabina de Jesus.I can't quite read the mothers name of Rosa
Luiza.it looks like Hannah which doesn't seem Portuguese but it does say
she's from Pico which is what the family says.the priest said her last name
could be Luza.my family says either Gracia or Furtado..I just don't
know!
I'm putting my check in tomorrows mail and appreciate the gracious help they
gave me so much!
Thanks for the nudge!
Nancy
