OK, do I misunderstand the conversation? I've not had time to follow it
properly this weekend.

But I wonder what privacy of genealogical data or its public nature has to do
with it.

Do I correctly undersatnd that Dropbox is a place you can put your gedcom's or
backed up genealogical databases to access them at a later time, and others
cannot access them?

If so, I'd use it!

Kathy; Please know that I have not been nor am I now trying to create a
problem or disagree with anyone's use of DB. I'm just trying to get educated
and no, I don't put social security numbers in my database unless that person
has died. I do have living peoples full names, addresses, parents, siblings,
children, etc. though.

Cheri; Thank you, I will check on what Eastman has to say about identity

  Repost for Kathy Cardoza:

Sam The private information for others you are so concerned about is
going to be mostly public information, anyway. Unless, of course, you are
including people's Social Security numbers in your files, which I would always
advise against. That info is more likely to be illegally gotten through other
means than by services such as Dropbox. Remember, It is NOT seen by the public.

The issue of privatizing an individuals information is handled by your
genealogy program, if at all,and is not the job of Dropbox. That is not what DB
is. It is for backing up your data, storing it in a safe, encrypted file, for
you to access AND for syncing your data between two or more computers, if you
choose to do that.

If you are still not totally comfortable using services like Dropbox, just
don't do it!

Kathy, This explanation has been very helpful to me. Thank you for being so
thorough in your explanation. Not to be a worry wart which I admit to,
but; when you say DB is encrypted, aren't all the banks and the govt.
databases encrypted and they have been hacked. I guess I just worry that
the people who do identity thefts would find this a database worth hacking
since it would give them all kinds of vital information on a person. Your
thoughts on this would be appreciated. Thanks for taking the time, Sam in

OK, Cheri . I'm chiming in. :)

I have used Dropbox for quite a while now and I love it! It is safe to use
as everything is encrypted. Dropbox can be used as a backup service or (as I
use it) to keep both of my computers, my iPad, and my iPhone all in sync. I
store ALL of my genealogy files in my DB. That includes digital files of
census, church records, vital records, etc. and photos. Also, anything that
I want to be available to me on my other computer, is saved in my DB. For
instance, I have a program that stores all the serial numbers and other info
for all my programs. That is stored in my DB so that I can access it from
either computer. I also store all my genealogy program files in my DB.
Dropbox syncs all the changes I make to my file so that when I want to work
on it on my desktop computer, I am assured that I am working on the most
current version of my data.

Important things to know about Dropbox It is a wonderful tool but
you need to understand how it works, so that you can use it correctly,
without any problems, if you are using it on more than one computer or on
multiple devices. You must understand that whatever you put in your DB, gets
synced up to the cloud where it lives and is available to use as a backup.
So, at the very least, your data is still very much on your own computer's
hard drive as well as up in the cloud. If you are using DB to sync your data
to a second computer, then the data is copied from the cloud back down to
your second computer. So far so good. If you are using Dropbox to sync, the
most important thing to know and remember is that you CANNOT have a file you
store in the DB open on Computer A and then open that same file on Computer
B at the same time. You will get conflicted copy errors. It isn't
necessarily a catastrophe, but will necessitate you having to choose which
file to keep from the two that you will now have in your DB. That COULD
cause you major headaches. You just have to understand how DB works in this
regard and always, ALWAYS, ALWAYS .. did I say always ?.close the
file on one computer before you open it on the other. An example of this
would be: I use Reunion for Mac for my genealogy. If I am adding info to my
Reunion file on my laptop but know I want to go sit at my desktop computer
to do further work, I quit Reunion on my laptop. I walk down to my office,
wait a minute for the files to sync to my desktop computer, then open the
Reunion file on my desktop Mac. Wala! I can continue working on the same
file, right where I left off on the laptop. When I'm finished with working
on Reunion on my desktop Mac, I quit Reunion and DB syncs the file. Oh, BTW,
DB provides you with a menubar icon that quickly lets you see if files are
synced and up to date, are currently syncing, or what has just finished
syncing like the Reunion family file from my example.

Because I store so much in DB, I upgraded my account to 50 GB sometime ago.
I find it to be indispensable to me, both as a backup and a syncing utility.
If you have an iPhone or iPad, Dropbox has a free app for those devices (and
probably others, too). Those work great, too! I can view any genealogy
document I own right on those other devices. BTW, I also have other backup
systems in place to insure the safety of all my files so, for me, DB is more
for syncing. It is a wonderful utility that is free for 2 GB of storage. I
would wholeheartedly recommend it!

I apologize for being so long winded but I hope this has been helpful to
some folks.

Hi Cheri,
Not to drop a monkey wrench into your promo, but, doesn't most
security software provide automatic backup? I know that PAF is
continually prompting me to backup my files. If one prefers an outside
source, it isn't that expensive or that difficult to periodically
backup your software and data regularly to a RW/DVD. Then again there
are flash drives that can hold pretty much any database you give them.
Barring all those other options, there are also rescue programs, which
search out and retrieve data. I've experienced computer crashes like
anyone else who's been at this for a while, but I've always been able
to retrieve my data. :-)

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Webinar: Dropbox for Genealogists (sort of like a back up) TODAY, Thursday, April 21

2011-04-22 Thread Cheri Mello
Dan,

It won't do me any good for my automatic backup (which goes to my hard
drive) if that fails. It won't do me any good either if I back up to a
CD/DVD or a flash/thumb/USB drive if there's an earthquake here in CA or the
neighbor above me has a flood and everything is damaged down here. Or what
about the person whose computer is a laptop? The laptop is in the car and
the car is stolen. And they haven't bothered to back up in awhile or they
backed up on their hard drive. I think you have been lucky. Sit on my side
for awhile and read the messages that come to me personally. The person who
wrote me the other day had the computer in the shop. I'm sure a great sum
of money was paid, but the genealogy could not be retrieved.

I need another place for my genealogy back up files. Dropbox (DB) has 2 GB
for free (and there's some referral program to get you a little more as
Yvonne has mentioned). I think I still need another place to backup my
whole computer too (besides the external hard drive - which can fail, be
lost in an earthquake, or be damaged in a flood).

For my security software, I have Zone Alarm, AVG, Malwarebytes, Spybot, and
Windows Defender. None of them back up my system. None of them fully
protect me either.

As for the outside source, some are $5, 6, 7 a month. So that's maybe $84 a
year. I'll round that to $100. The amount of money that I have put into my
genealogy is worth that $100 to me. And many do provide automatic back ups
where you can set it and forget it.

This is just another source for people to use. This is not a promotion,
just another tool. I have no affiliation with DB or anything else. Like I
said, it's sad for me to see these messages in my email about lost genealogy
due to computer problems. Do what works best for you. If backing up to
your hard drive is all you need and you have a great computer tech and it
works for you, then that's great.

Sam,

Poke around in Dick Eastman's archives. He wrote about identity theft.
www.eogn.com It's much, much easier for thieves to get it from your trash
or other places.

The only time I came close was when the kid at the hardware store stole my
credit card number. I bought a bunch of stuff, including the little night
light type bulbs. One was the wrong wattage. So I went to get the correct
one and the kid said he could only do exchanges at another register. The
difference was 7 cents! But he insisted. He didn't turn in the receipt to
the store. He kept it (this was back in the day when your full credit card
number printed out on receipts). The next day, my credit card company
called me. I was in a restaurant in FL, a Home Depot in MI, and bought 2
plane tickets (complete with names) in CO. My credit card company stopped
the card and I wasn't responsible for the charges. I went back to Lowes and
reported the employee, but he had already quit by then. The manager was

are things like documents, census images, etc. There are apps that will take
a gedcom from any genealogy program such as Legacy and let you display your

You still can,but just not in the way you thought. In the AppStore, search

Put your genealogy backup file in Dropbox. If anything happens, you can
retrieve it from there. You can also access it from your other computer (if

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Webinar: Dropbox for Genealogists (sort of like a back up) TODAY, Thursday, April 21

2011-04-21 Thread Kathy Cardoza
OK, Cheri . I'm chiming in. :)

I have used Dropbox for quite a while now and I love it! It is safe to use as
everything is encrypted. Dropbox can be used as a backup service or (as I use
it) to keep both of my computers, my iPad, and my iPhone all in sync. I store
ALL of my genealogy files in my DB. That includes digital files of census,
church records, vital records, etc. and photos. Also, anything that I want to
be available to me on my other computer, is saved in my DB. For instance, I
have a program that stores all the serial numbers and other info for all my
programs. That is stored in my DB so that I can access it from either computer.
I also store all my genealogy program files in my DB. Dropbox syncs all the
changes I make to my file so that when I want to work on it on my desktop
computer, I am assured that I am working on the most current version of my data.

Important things to know about Dropbox It is a wonderful tool but you
need to understand how it works, so that you can use it correctly, without any
problems, if you are using it on more than one computer or on multiple devices.
You must understand that whatever you put in your DB, gets synced up to the
cloud where it lives and is available to use as a backup. So, at the very
least, your data is still very much on your own computer's hard drive as well
as up in the cloud. If you are using DB to sync your data to a second computer,
then the data is copied from the cloud back down to your second computer. So
far so good. If you are using Dropbox to sync, the most important thing to know
and remember is that you CANNOT have a file you store in the DB open on
Computer A and then open that same file on Computer B at the same time. You
will get conflicted copy errors. It isn't necessarily a catastrophe, but will
necessitate you having to choose which file to keep from the two that you will
now have in your DB. That COULD cause you major headaches. You just have to
understand how DB works in this regard and always, ALWAYS, ALWAYS .. did I
say always ?.close the file on one computer before you open it on the
other. An example of this would be: I use Reunion for Mac for my genealogy. If
I am adding info to my Reunion file on my laptop but know I want to go sit at
my desktop computer to do further work, I quit Reunion on my laptop. I walk
down to my office, wait a minute for the files to sync to my desktop computer,
then open the Reunion file on my desktop Mac. Wala! I can continue working on
the same file, right where I left off on the laptop. When I'm finished with
working on Reunion on my desktop Mac, I quit Reunion and DB syncs the file. Oh,
BTW, DB provides you with a menubar icon that quickly lets you see if files are
synced and up to date, are currently syncing, or what has just finished syncing
like the Reunion family file from my example.

Because I store so much in DB, I upgraded my account to 50 GB sometime ago. I
find it to be indispensable to me, both as a backup and a syncing utility. If
you have an iPhone or iPad, Dropbox has a free app for those devices (and
probably others, too). Those work great, too! I can view any genealogy document
I own right on those other devices. BTW, I also have other backup systems in
place to insure the safety of all my files so, for me, DB is more for syncing.
It is a wonderful utility that is free for 2 GB of storage. I would
wholeheartedly recommend it!

I apologize for being so long winded but I hope this has been helpful to some
folks.
