[AZORES-Genealogy] Rego de Viveiros in Sao Miguel
Hello there, My name is Marcelo and I am researching my family roots in Azores. My grandmother, just before she died, told me that her great grandfather name was João do Rego de Viveiros, from Ilhéus, Azores. As I am quite new on this, I would like to know if anyone could tell me where I can begin my research on Rego de Viveiros. So far I have found lots of referencies to Viveiros Rego. Could it mean that my grandmother got confused about the surname ? Any direction I will be very grateful. Marcelo, I think you are in Europe. You are going to have to research this Portuguese ancestor by using the sources of the country he lived in to turn up the island (there are 9) and then the freguesia (village) that he belonged to. From there, you can use Azorean records to do you search. Sorry this isn't more help. Thank you Cheri Mello, I am originally from Brazil but I live in England for 20 years now. I think I should have given all the details I have. I was able to trace João do Rego de Viveiros to São Miguel Island. I found this information on the passengers list that arrived in Brazil in 1834. On that record it says that João was a 24 years old single man, from São Miguel Island and had his address at Rua do Sabão, No. 3. Could you tell me if the Azorean Records are searchable ? Hi Marcelo, That's a first for me. A street and no freguesia. There are about 70 freguesias on Sao Miguel. Maybe someone on this list has heard of your street. Once you get your freguesia, some of them are online at the Centro de Conhecimento dos Acores (CCA) web site and some records you will have to order from your local Family History Center (FHC) or wait for them to come online. The online ones are not searchable. Some of the film shows the book with an index to it. It's still not searchable, but at least that is a help.
