[AZORES-Genealogy] Request assistance with professions of father and godfather, Terceira c. 1900

2017-07-29 Thread linda
Hi Group,

I think I have got the father's profession, but would very much appreciate
a second opinion from a fresh set of eyes.

I am stumped on the godfather's profession; I think I can read the letters,
but I believe I may be missing a more likely answer than a misspelled
whaler. Any and all ideas welcome!

thanks!

:)

Linda

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Request for assistance with ancestory information.

2017-03-17 Thread Cheri Mello
If you have an Ancestry.com subscription, go to the Immigration section,
search for Passenger lists, and type in Lucinda Alvernaz. You'll see her
coming in to America. It will say where she sailed from and it will say
what her home village was and who her dad was. Make sure you read page 2 as
well. Then you'll need to go out to the Azores GenWeb to figure out what
they mean by that P.
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~azrwgw/maps-churches-and-villages/pico.html

To figure out Hermano Martins, you need Lucinda's Declaration of Intention
too. She also may have an Alien Registration as well. You can find out more
about the naturalization process on the Azores GenWeb here:
https://goo.gl/vOijK0 (Section 1e- The Immigrant).

You also need to figure out where Lucinda married Hermano and get the
marriage from that church. Not the form that they hand you. What was
written in the book. The same with your dad's baptism and his sister's
baptism. You don't want the church to send you the certificate. You want
what is in the book. They may have stated where they are from to the church
and they may have written that in the book. The certificate doesn't ask for
that information so it won't be stated on the certificate.

You won't find some of these names overseas because they have become so
butchered in your family.

There's no such name as "Hernary." I don't know if that's supposed to be a
Henry or something else. If I sound it out in English, I'm saying somthing that
sounds close to Hernia. Maybe you can tell us how it is pronounced. You also

Alveraas is not a name either. No double "a" in Portuguese. It was probably

Donna,

You won't find some of these names overseas because they have become so
butchered in your family.

There's no such name as "Hernary." I don't know if that's supposed to be a
Henry or something else. If I sound it out in English, I'm saying somthing that
sounds close to Hernia. Maybe you can tell us how it is pronounced. You also
state he was born on the island of Pico and then later state he was born in
Portugal. Which one? It's two different record sets.

Alveraas is not a name either. No double "a" in Portuguese. It was probably
Alveras, so that one is easier. And her first name isn't so bad. Since you have
her inbound to the U.S., can you tell us what the ship manifest said about the
port she left from? Also what sources point you to her being born on 21 Oct
1904 in Pico?
Thanks,

Dear Donna:

Your welcome. I'm fairly new and there are a lot of members on this list
that are way better at transcribing then I am and can also give you advice
about the records, and you may find others who are researching your family
as well. The Azores Gen Web Site also has great info to help you learn to
transcribe the records yourself with a little help from this great group.
Keep posting, members will help.

Suzanne,

I depends on when the person was born. If this person was born within the
last 100 years, you will need to write to one of the 19 Civil Registries. A
list can be found on the Azores Genweb here:
