Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] transferring genealogy programs

2011-11-30 Thread Robin Lebo
Reading the posts, another site that I use is TribalPages for keeping a copy of
my family tree. A distant cousin suggested it. I love that I can put notes and
pictures all together for the person. It is free up to a certain point and
after that the annual fee is relatively low compared to ancestry. This is not
for everyone and others connect it with their FB. It is just another tool.
I have all my files saved to a memory stick. So far no compatibility issues
with any computer. I have one I use on trips. I can use it anywhere I go to
save records on a computer. It just makes it easier for me. If I get a new
computer I just open and continue on. I have had no file or program issues yet.
Have never used a Mac. So that might be different.
I have a couple of programs that I use one is Legacy, but I don't really like
it.
A lot of genealogists maybe farther ahead in their knowledge than I am. I just
thought this might help.
Blessings to all on their searches.

Thanks, Cheri.  I tend to think you are correct.  The gedcoms I have received
did not have all the information I have in my notes section of my files.

I have not had time to read the book on Roots Magic 4 I purchased when I bought
the program.  I probably will not get to it until after the holidays.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] transferring genealogy programs

2011-11-29 Thread Besotes
Hello Celeste,

I'm in the same boat.My newer computer has crashed three time (and been sent
to warranty repair all three times) during the first 9 months of owning it.
Had a good back up and all documents and such backed up to an external
device. My only problem was with Outlook. The last restore would only
import my emails and I've lost all my folders and contacts. Of course all
my genealogy folders with contact information and information others sent me
related to my lines.

One thought maybe to use the Free genealogy program. I can't remember the
name of it, but someone on the group has mentioned it before. Could be one
through the Family History site (LDS)? This way, you won't have to worry
about computer upgrades being compatible with software changes and such.
All my information is in Ancestry's online tree. I'm probably at their
mercy until I don't want to pay their monthly fees anymore. Then I'll be in
the same boat as you, I'm assuming. I've never looked into how I can export
my information if I so choose.

Good luck!

2011-11-29 Thread Dora Smith
What you need to do is open the family tree maker file in family tree maker,
and export a gedcom file. Then import the gedcom file into Rootsweb.

Unless Rootsweb can directly import FTM files. I don't think so, but it's
possible. It can directly import some kinds of files.
