Suzanne, People got dispensations because they were related up to 3rd cousins. Consanguinity (consanguinidade) = related by blood, i.e., marrying your cousin Affinity (affindade) = related by marriage, i.e., marrying your sister-in-law. To find out exactly why, you'd need to get the dispensation, if it exists. Many do exist and they are held in Angra (does not matter which island the marriage occured on). Hi Suzanne, Is this your cousins ancestor and if so has she taken the Family Finder test? Manuel Teixeira de Avila is my 4th ggrandfather. I descend by his first marriage to Maria de Jesus (she was a Bettencourt). Manuel is my most interesting ancestor thus far. His father was Jose Antonio da Silveira and his mother was Maria de Jesus ( daughter of Manuel de Avila Teixeira.) He was given his maternal grandfathers name. He and Maria de Jesus had quite a few children (would need to look for #)...they married when he was 26 and she was 19. He married Anna dos Anjos, his 2nd wife when he was 84 and she was 36. They had their first child (Maria) out of wedlock Nov 2 1853CCA Velas baptisms 1845-1857, pg 0206.they married in Dec. 1854, he died Sept 17th, 1855, CCA record, Velas obits, 1826-1855, pg 295, 1 month before their 2nd child, Maria Santa was born...CCA record, pg.256. I've gleaned what I can from the various records but would also appreciate translation of your record by more fluent speakers.I don't know the connection between he and Anna but feel like there may have been one. Ok, I have a correction. You and she are directly related. Manoel d'Avila Teixeira is her 3rd great-grandfather and Maria de Jesus is her 3rd great-grandmother. Their son Joao Teixeira da Avila married Maria Josepha Coracao de Jesus. They had a son Manuel Teixeira d'Avila who married Maria Luiza Silveira. They had a daughter Maria Teixeira Avila who married Joao Rapinha Silva (from Ribeirinha, Pico). They had a daughter named Myrtle Silva who was Marlene's mother. (phew). To go a little further back for you---Manoel d'Avila Teixiera's father's father is Manoel Machado Fagundes who married Joanna Baptista on 16 Feb 1732 Beira. If you have that info, then you must have their parents, etc. No she has not taken the Family Finder test. She might do it, but hasn't decided. Hi Suzanne, Is Marlene a group memberI have a memory of emailing with a Marlene Teixeira around 2007 or so and at the time we thought we might be cousins because of the Sao Jorge Teixeira connection. It would be great if she took the family finder because I have so many new cousins with Sao Jorge ancestry and perhaps we could figure out if any of them were also this line. Regardless, I'm happy to know we descend from brothers of Manuel and Maria. Also, wonder if she has any one behind Manuel Machado Fagundes and Joanna Baptista...they're the farthest back I have found. I post to the group in hopes that someone else may have any of these couples.in my 9 pages of Family Finder cousins MANY of them are Sao Jorge. Francisco and Francisca married 9 Feb 1777 at Beira, Velas. The impediment is first degree affinity. Maybe she was his daughter-in-law or step-Daughter. Hello Maria Natalia,Apparently this gives a lot of confusion.In this instance, the groom was a widower and is said to be related in the 1st degree of afinidade.To understand that, one must realize being related in the 1st degree is like two siblings. So of course, these people are not siblings. What they must be are siblings by marriage.
