I was able to test my dads brother for both Y and MT DNA and she was U5. Hi Nancy, There are some groups of mtDNA that are uncommon. Especially if they are placed in an isolated situation as your U5. As for me on my mother’s (French Canadian)side it is W3a2. At this point all French Canadian W3a2 matches go to a single person that immigrated there around 1600. My Dad is L2a1c. While there is a large number worldwide there are very few in the Acores. My great grandmother is K1a4a1 again not a common group in the Azores. This makes things interesting when there is a match. I am glad your testing paid off Nancy. Hi Rick, I didn't realize U5 was fairly uncommon in the Azores..it's an interesting MT DNA when I read about it. I posted this because I have so many Family Finder matches that seem to be from Pico. I thought maybe it would be easier to connect via the U5 line than just random pursuit. For Freddy and me it paid off to trace the U5 and I'm hoping more people can find our link following the U5 trail. Your DNA's are interesting and the fact that they are uncommon in the Azores should help with discoveries. It sounds like you've made good progress with your mom's side since you have an individual identified. I'm glad I tested my Uncle.I would have always wondered what mt DNA Grandma Mary carried. I still have hopes of testing to discover her husband's DNA, my ggrandfather, Manuel Furtado Cardoso. He has a living great grandson who I hope will test someday. I'm not looking at a record at this moment, but I believe my line ends at Jose Rodrigues Serpa and Ana Medeiros because of a gap in the Candelaria records. Hi Gayle, The great grandparents are also listed in CITCEM. Antonio Furtado Medeiros and Catarina Rodrigues. There are no birth dates for them or their marriage. It shows their 1st child, Pedro, born in June of 1709. I haven't looked for their marriage since the records came on line. Is your descendency from Josefa Clara through her daughters and granddaughters, etc down to you? My mtdna just came back and I am U5a2a1. My maternal lineage is from Madeira island. I wonder how common/uncommon the U5 haplotype is on Madeira as compared to the Azores... I updated mtDNA haplogroup U. I counted the total Us in my previous email and not just U5s. Hence the difference now. There are a total of 34 people in haplogroup U (of any kind). There are now 18 of them who are U5s of some sort. As for the 394 total...if anyone wants to count up the total on the public page, feel free to do so. It won't be 394. The 394 is the total of people in the Azores project who have tested their mtDNA. If someone is half Azorean on the paternal side and the maternal side is half-whatever, that number is part of the total. Example: My dad is counted in that total, however, his mtDNA is lost in Indiana. His results do not appear on the public page, however, he is an Azores DNA Project member who tested his mtDNA. So the total number of 394 is not purely Azorean. The only way to get the total is to count. So if anyone has insomnia, feel free to count up the total number of people on that page. I counted U5. From the Project Statistics screen on the admin end, I cannot tell if they are predicted or confirmed. I'll have to take a look after Christmas and figure it out.
