Shirl,

Did you look at the actual image? I think you are correct in assuming
Portugal and Terceira. If you want me to take a look, send the info to me
and I will gladly do so.

Hi!
There was no actual image. Ancestry.com just had a printed-out page
with the information on it. Some came from other trees but they didn't
show any image, either. Someone along the line must have misinterpreted
the spelling. Now to go back and change all the birth place to
Portugal! I do know that the Massachusetts archives had written
Terceira, WL and Cheri told me that they meant Western Islands.
When the lady at the archives wrote back she included the original
script which did look a lot like a fancy L! (Hopefully, she changed
the records.)

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Place Name or ??

2012-01-16 Thread Joao S. Lopes
wikipedia:

Fajãs are a geological feature of São Jorge Island in the Azores.
The island is volcanic in character with steep cliffs running down to the sea.
The fajãs are small areas of flat land by the sea caused by
the collapse of cliffs. The fajãs are fertile and used for growing many
plants including yams, maize and vegetables. It is possible to grow coffee,
vineyards, tropical fruits and dragon trees in some of them.
There are fajãs on both sides of the island. On the lower, sunnier southern
coast, one will find the fajãs of Velas, Santo Amaro, Almas, Grande, Vimes,
Bodes, Além, São João, Cardoso and Alabaçal. The north
is a succession of tiny fajãs at the bottom of ravines that are hundreds of
metres deep; the outstanding ones are those of Caldeira de Santo Cristo with an
underwater cave and a lake which is the only source of cockles in the Azores,
Cubres (also with a crystalline lake) and Ouvidor.

On Sao Miguel there is a Faja de Cima and a Faja de Baixo. It could be
referring to a local area which is part of a larger village.
