THANK YOU ERICA You have helped knock down the brick wall that has been
holding me up on researching my paternal grandfather's family. I've "literally"
been pounding my head against this wall for 5 years now trying to find the
baptism records for my great grandfather and his siblings. I almost cried when
I viewed them.

Familysearch.com has just digitized almost all of their Madeira records. You
can access them through searching their "catalog". Type in the place "Madeira,
Portugal" and "search". Then choose the option of "church records - 50 items".
This will bring you to a list of all of the freguesias of Madeira. Pick your
freguesia and click on it. That will bring up a list of all the records they
have. If the icon to the right is a camera, then you can click on that link
and look through them. If the icon is a film reel, then those records are not
uploaded to the internet yet and only available through ordering them directly.

A friend asked me for help on his wife's Madeira ancestry. I'd like to help
with reading the records for them but I'm not sure the records are online like
the Azores. I'm not even sure yet if there's more than one island - sorry to
admit in public - I'm just starting to explore how I can help them.

Is there an equivalent list for Madeira like this one?

Thanks,

Good for you Paul. And keep on going. Madeira has some interesting lines

2017-05-16 Thread Cheri Mello
Joining Rootsweb lists doesn't work that way. Sending a message to
prt-made...@rootsweb.com means you sent the word "subscribe" to everyone on
the list. Follow the directions in the link I provided in the previous
email. Here it is again:
http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/PRT/PRT-MADEIRA.html

Tombo.pt is only a portal (like an index or a table of contents) to the
Portuguese based arquives. He's written code to crawl all the Portuguese
based sites in the Azores, Madeira, and the continent of Portugal. He then
presents you with what is available all on one page.

Hope that clarifies things! Cheri

2017-05-16 Thread 'Denise' via Azores Genealogy
Hi Maria Elena,

Yes there is a Madeira email list like this one. The email is
prt-made...@rootsweb.com. I believe if you send an email to that address saying
SUBSCRIBE it should get you on the list. In the meantime, the way Erica
explained how to view the Madeira films on line at FamilySearch.org is the best
way of doing it, just follow her instructions. Tombo and the Archivo Regional
da Madeira are no where near where Family Search is right now.

There's no need to compare lists, just go to the site that has what you're
looking for. Not all parishes are available yet but a decent amount are.

It's very clear on Tombo.pt that Madeira is not all there. I don't have the
time to sit down and compare the records that Tombo.pt is catching from the ABM
(Madeira's CCA site) to the records that Family Search is doing. I'll leave
that to someone who researches Madeira. Cheri

It's very clear on Tombo.pt that Madeira is not all there. I don't have the
time to sit down and compare the records that Tombo.pt is catching from the
ABM (Madeira's CCA site) to the records that Family Search is doing. I'll
leave that to someone who researches Madeira. Cheri

I'm not so sure about that.

Tombo.pt shows only 975 Madeira records digitized by the Madeiran
government so far, with more to go. Family Search has 50? Someone needs to
sit down and compare the two. Are they counting books? Parishes? Or what?

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Question on Madeira research

2017-05-16 Thread Erica Botelho

Thanks,

Maria Elena

2017-05-15 Thread Maria Lima
CHERI- thank you so much for all that info. I've been trying to find the List
on Cindi's List and I couldn't and then I saw your email. I'm so grateful for
how you bless our lives with sharing your knowledge. Thank you

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Question on Madeira research

2017-05-15 Thread Cheri Mello
Madeira is digitizing their records too. Their site is called the ABM and
you can access it through Tombo.pt. However, I think the ABM is down at the
moment.

Madeira has only 2 islands: Madeira, (about the same population as Sao
Miguel) and Porto Santo.

The Madeira list is run by Luis Beal and it is housed at Rootweb. You can
find the archives and join instructions here:
