Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Some help

2019-05-30 Thread Gordon soares
I’m using Family Search. I can’t find them leaving the Azores either. I’m
beginning to think Jesse came somehow illegally but his wife Maria ( what
else?) came a year or two later with my Uncle Manuel (you probably could guess)
around 1902 or as late as 1904 but not later based on my uncles age.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Some help

2019-05-29 Thread M. Stringer
Hi,

My grandmother and family arrived at New Bedord, MA (July 7, 1904, S. S.
Patria). Per the ship's roster, their destination was her mother's sister
in Cambridge, MA.

Her (and siblings') Naturalization papers were the core resources. They
cited their ship and other details about their journey and familes in the
US.

There were other East Coast points of entry - some entries via Canada.
Other helpful resources could be clues/details in censuses, directories,
newspapers.

Cheers,

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Some help

2019-05-29 Thread Cheri Mello
Hi Gordon,

The main ports on the east coast of America for Portuguese immigration are:
Providence, Boston, New Bedford, and New York. Gloucester was a port from
1906-1943.

It was up to the ship captain to decided where his passengers would be
counted if he stopped at 2 ports. I have one ancestor who sailed into New
York (Ellis) and then on to New Bedford. She is counted in Ellis/NY. The
other sailed into NY and then to Boston. He is counted in Boston.
Information from "They Came in Ships" by John P. Colletta

Boston: 1 Aug 1891- Dec 1943 NARA roll T843. Indices from 1 Jan 1902-30 Jun
1906 (T521). There's more, but this covers your 1902 date.
New Bedford: 1 Jul 1902-Jul1942 (T944); Indices 1 Jul 1902-18 Nov 1954
(T5222). You didn't say when in 1902 you think your ancestor came.
New York: This is online, as you know.
Providence: 17 Jun 1911 - Jan 1943 (T1188); Indices 18 Jun 1911-5 Oct 1954
(T518) and more...This does not cover your 1902 date.

Information from "American Passenger Arrival Records" by Michael Tepper,
copyright 1993, pp. 125-128

To New York:The Insular Navigation Company sailed from Lisbon and the
Azores and they went to New Bedford and New York. Their only ship that year
was the Peninsular, arriving in NY on these dates: Jan. 11, May 17, July 7,
Aug 25, Oct 18, Dec 13.

The Linha de Vapores Portuguezes also sailed from Lisbon and the Azores.
Their ship was the Patria and arrived in NY on Apr. 7, June 6, and Sept 16.
Information from "Morton Allan Directory," published 1931 with several
reprints (mine is 2001) pp. 84-88.

Keep in mind that if your ancestor had an alcunha, he may have entered
under that name instead of Ferreira. And I hope you are searching under
Jacinto and Jacintho as well as Jesse.
Good luck,

I have the same story as Rosemary…..searched for my last grandfather to arrive
(1913) for years in New York…and then Boston and Philadelphia too…….and THEN i
saw a sticker on the wooden box that held his viola, carried from the
Azores……and saw part of the word Providence on that sticker…..At that time, the
information was not released to the pubic as it was too recent, and I had a
worker at the National Archives in Washington DC search for me…….Eureka!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Some help

2019-05-29 Thread Nancy Couto
Gordon, my maternal grandfather and his mother and sisters arrived in New
Bedford in 1901. My father and his mother and siblings arrived in Boston in
1920. My maternal grandmother and her mother were the only ones in my
family to enter through Ellis Island. Immigrants who landed in New York
prior to 1892 probably came through Castle Garden.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Some help

2019-05-29 Thread Rosemarie Capodicci
Gordon,
I searched for my grandfather and his family for years coming in to NY. I
knew the ship, the Madonna, the date too and could not find them on the
ship manifest. Then when Ellis Island was being remodeled, I asked my Tia
(grandpa's sis) if she remembered seeing the Statue of Liberty and Ellis
when they arrived. She said, no, we landed in Providence RI!!! 35 years of
looking in NY and there they were, coming into RI. You have to realize that
the Passenger Manifests stayed in the *Port of Entry*. So,the Madonna went
to Providence first dropped off passengers and then on to NY! Problem
solved.
