RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Transferring your DNA to My Heritage DNA before December 1
Marsha S, The analogy I am coming up with is your raw DNA data is like having money in a bank. The "banks" in this scenario are FTDNA and MyHeritage. You can take your money out of one bank and put it in another. You can take your raw data from one company and put it in another. Your money is yours to do with it as you wish. And your raw data is also yours to do with as you wish. This initial post is about DNA testing companies (like banks). GEDMatch is a 3rd party tool. I haven't yet come up with an analogy for it yet. Only thing I can sort of come up with is banks (in America) are FDIC insured. GedMatch isn't. Anyone can access it, even law enforcement. But that's a different topic for a different email. Each testing company has developed different tools and has different population samples. Transferring to MyHeritage DNA is currently free. Use of their tools will be grandfathered in. Beginning December 1st, you will have to pay. No, I don't know the amount. Roberta does have a scientific or technical background, so she completely understands this stuff. She tries very hard to break the science down for the us to understand in her blog, DNA-Explained.com. She wrote a long, detailed article on how DNA matching is done at My Heritage. All companies have their own similar processes. I encourage everyone to read the article and try to follow along. You don't need to understand the gory details. The only understanding is that there's a lot of science and stuff behind the scenes going into these matches and it's not a perfect science. There's no way to appreciate it until you read (or attend) lectures like this. So read her latest blog with the understanding that you are following along and will only digest small portions of it: https://goo.gl/uAnanQ And transfer over now, before American Thanksgiving and other things that will come up and make you forget :) Cheri Mello, Family Tree DNA Admin (volunteer) -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Azores Genealogy" group.
