This is definitely a problem with the 2.6.8 (sunfreeware) rsync. I
switched back to 2.6.6 and have no more problems with that particular

[BackupPC-users] BackupPC on a non-24x7 server

2006-06-01 Thread Wolfgang Karall
Hello,

I'm happily using BackupPC both in some companies and also at home. And
while all installations work perfectly (rsync-compatibility issues
aside, but that's not BackupPC's fault), I have a question about my home
installation.

That server is not running all the time, most of the days it's shutdown
for the night. Hence I run BackupPC_nightly from a daily cronjob with

su -c '/usr/share/backuppc/bin/BackupPC_nightly 0 255' backuppc

(this is a Debian unstable installation, btw)

This seems to work fine, but on the General Status Information page I
still read

* Pool is 16.00GB comprising 521616 files and 4369 directories (as of
1/14 01:04),
...
* Nightly cleanup removed 2906 files of size 0.09GB (around 1/14 01:04),
* Pool file system was recently at 65% (6/1 09:00), today's max is 92%
(2/7 14:00) and yesterday's max was 55%.

which is weird, as in, the dates for some of the values is completely
wrong, as are of course the ##GB values.

At the moment I'm not too worried about it, but I wonder whether this
can be a problem if the filesystem is filling up, etc., so I'd like to
know how or when BackupPC is updating those values and if I can manually
trigger this process.

Thanks in advance for any tips.

Kind regards
WK

Good thought. That gets me a bit farther. I excluded '/dev', and it
continued, but now it is stopping with a different error on every
special file it hits.

I will post details in a new thread.

[BackupPC-users] fileListReceive fails for special files using rsyncd

2006-06-01 Thread Bowie Bailey
I am trying to back up a linux server using BackupPC and rsyncd.

The problem is, every time it hits a socket file or fifo file, the
fileListReceive fails. This is the output I see from BackupPC_dump:

The file it fails on is this:
srw---1 root nobody 0 Sep 12 2003 /tmp/.fam5niafV

If I exclude this file, it will continue on and die on the next
special file it encounters.

Help! :)

Do you really need to backup /tmp ?
/home and /etc are sufficient most of the time, no ?
Or you could exclude /dev /proc and /tmp...

I excluded /tmp and that seems to have fixed it. I let the manual
dump run for a while before killing it. I will let a normal scheduled
backup run tonight and cross my fingers. :)

In order to get the backup to work, I had to exclude /dev,
/proc, /var/gdm/.gdmfifo, and /tmp.

[BackupPC-users] BackupPC install on Windows

2006-06-01 Thread Víctor A. Rodríguez
Hi all,

have anyone tried to install BackupPC on a Widows box ?
I mean nothing is said about it in the docs, nothing found in devel or user
archives, so I tried ... I tried and failed !!!

So far, I've found the next problems :

- no support from configure.pl : expects '/' at the beginning for absolute
paths, no way if '/C:' or '/cygdrive/c' is used (cygwin is installed) and
configure.pl run from Command Prompt or bash from Cygwin

- Apache support is needed : no problem, Apache 2.0 is available for Windows
(although many Windows compatible admins prefer IIS)

- No bzip2, cat or utility programs found : even when run from bash
(remember, cygwin installed !!). Looking at FindProgram() in configure.pl it
should find for cat.exe, bzip2.exe, etc. and it's not doing it :-P

- Unimplemented getpwnam: obviously the user database is not in the
/etc/passwd style and getpwnam() for searching users is not implemented (the
error : The getpwnam function is unimplemented at configure.pl line 255,
STDIN line 4)

I gave up :-P.

OK, I didn't went further but my suspicion is that __even__ if I install it
manually (following the code in configure.pl and making some tweaks) I'll
end with similar problems in the files at bin/ and cgi-bin/ in BackupPC
distribution.

Any thoughts ?? ideas ?? takers ??

Thanks for all your help.

The real killer is that the pooled files need hardlinks to work in
the filesystem. NTFS does have a similar concept but I'm not sure
if they work exactly the same way and I don't think perl knows how
to make them even if they do. So, I don't think anyone has done
a windows version. If you really need it to run on a windows host
you might try installing Linux under VMware using the free server
version.

True. Indeed and sadly true, I forgot about it.

Is what I was trying to avoid, but perhaps I'll end doing it (it's just a

Newer versions of rsync change the flag required to backup special

Mattia,

A while back I documented the steps needed to install
Backuppc on SuSE 10. The installation goes very well
if you use some of the packages included in the SuSE
distribution. See the following URL:

http://www.moderndoorbells.com/backuppc

I have suggested this document be included somewhere
in the backuppc documentation on SourceForge.

Best of luck,

Perfect! That seems to have done it. I'll know for sure after the

I did search the list archives for the original error that I got when
