[BackupPC-users] Wake on lan features not successful
Dear All,
I can successfully use ether-wake command to start the remote server / desktop.
But when I try with following command it show in log but nothing
execute or happen.
$Conf{PingPath} = '/bin/echo';
$Conf{DumpPreUserCmd} = 'path_to_etherwake hwaddr'
How to test. ??

I think that can be run under cygwin install on windows. I have not tried but lots of other software are working. In my case :20 gb of backup is taking around 98 minutes full backup and 45 minutes incremental backup. What your setting of config.pl. [BackupPC-users] rsyncd problem
I want to use rsyncd as backup method. I am using 3.0 version. Getting error like: full backup started for directory /data (baseline backup #34) Error connecting to rsync daemon at 192.168.2.206:873: inet connect: Connection refused Got fatal error during xfer (inet connect: Connection refused) Backup aborted (inet connect: Connection refused) It seems rsync daemon not running. Thanx for your answer, The windows pc the size of backup is not more than 200MB. This observed in 20% to 25% pc only. Other pc are working on quite acceptable speed. So, you're saying that by explicitly stating the directory names in the included files list, it runs faster? It might be the codepage/character set the Windows boxes are installed with differs from the backup server, maybe? Out of curiosity... Do these clients have any folders with thousands of files in them? Traditionally, FAT32 has horrible performance in these directories, so much so that copying them can be tens to hundreds of times slower than the device's capability, due to the file system overhead of finding the inode corresponding to the filename. Their long filename support is pretty nasty and bloated. From memory, a directory of mp3's with lots of characters in each name is my worst case, and it has about 4000 files in it. It's very slow just to pull up a directory listing of it. NTFS is better in this regard, but I'm not going to say "good". I found a strange characteristic of IDE drive. When I connected CDROM and IDE hdd on same channel the data transfer with hdparm -t command is @37 MB. As I removed CDROM from that channel now the data transfer rate is @60 MB. We do have few linux pc / server works fine without any problem. Other 25% pc backcup is dead slow. The data transfer is in 20kbps. I found few things might cause problem. 1. Space within the directory name. ( I do not know but seems to be) 2. Tree structure 3. " ' " single quote in directory name cause problem. Presently we have solve this problem with following long procedure. If want to take backup of /data dir. I will list all the subdir of the /datat in include file list. per pc. But if the subdir are in large no. than it is a problem. I think it is some problem of naming convention of windows and linux. I am using backuppc 3.0 with rsync method. The idea is to find a files with certain exension eg .xls .doc etc. can we utilise the find command and give output to rsync ?? [BackupPC-users] some difficulties with windows backup
I observed following things when we take backup of windows pc winxp and win98. We use rsync for windows with cygwin. 1. The directory contains, number of subdirectory with special char mostly "space" than the backup is dead slow Some time it takes 600 min to take 1 GB backup. 2. It does not skip file if some problem occure to take backup of the same file. 3. The same thing happen when try to take backup of windows directory. It does not skip a files which can not backed up. It take too much time and then no backups. One can use one more backppc for pure rescue to the original backuppc server. and run it only once a week or month for rescue purpose. So whenever something goes rong restore from the rescue backuppc. [BackupPC-users] can not start backup from CGI web interface
It is new installation ( No of previous installation working fine ) RHEL4 This PC has never been backed up!! This PC is used by root (and admin, backuppc). Last status is state "idle" as of 22/7 12:18. Got above err, can not start backup pc. I have added few more client. Thigs remain same. We are running successfully cygwin sshd and rsync on winxp / win2000 and win 98 too. It had given excellent result. you need to create proper ssh key authentication for backuppc. try to create administrator user in windows pc and add ssh key base authentication between windows and linux backup server. What system is to be backup Windows / Linux ?? If it is Linux than best method is rsync. Even if windows you can use rsync with cygwin setup , As per my observation even hidden share also easily affected by viruses. So If you do not want to share your drive even hidden sharing the rsync is good method for backup windows pc. We try some registry hack suggested from google search. We tested backuppc backup with rsync method on windows 98 with cygwin.
