[BackupPC-users] 504 Gateway Time-out on Backuppc web interface

2014-08-30 Thread Tom Fallon
The web interface on one of our backuppc servers is not responding – it
gives error The gateway did not receive a timely response from the upstream
server or application.

Apache appears to be ok as plugging the server IP into a browser brings up
the It Works! Default web page. I’ve tried restarting Apache to no avail.

Permissions look ok and no changes have been made to this box recently.
Apache config looks same as on other 2 backup machines.

Is there anything else I can check to resolve this?

Regards, Kiweegie

Re: [BackupPC-users] 504 Gateway Time-out on Backuppc web interface

2014-09-03 Thread Tom Fallon

Hi Kenneth

thanks for taking the time to reply Hard to tell if backuppc is
running or not. I've tried service backuppc status but that does not
appear to be a valid command.

Checking the backuppc documentation I should be able to run
/usr/share/backuppc/bin/BackupPC_serverMesg status info but this appears
to do nothing. No error response and no output. Same command on a
working backuppc server shows wall of text which per the documentation
"If it looks cryptic and confusing, and doesn't look like an error
message, then all is ok."

If I try restarting backuppc via service backuppc reload or service
backuppc restart I get the following error:

No process in pidfile '/var/run/backuppc/BackupPC.pid' found running;
none killed.

If I do service backuppc start it "seems" to start - * Starting backuppc...

regards Tom

If you don't see output something like this, then BackupPC isn't running.

Considering it didn't find a valid pid in /var/run/backuppc/BackupPC.pid when
you tried to restart, I'd say BackupPC wasn't running.

Re: [BackupPC-users] 504 Gateway Time-out on Backuppc web interface

2014-09-03 Thread Tom Fallon
Well I used pgrep backuppc and showed nothing.

So it's failed to launch for whatever reason.

Are there log files anywhere which could point to why? Pool size on a nas
being used for storage has hit 90% in case that's relevant.

Possibly restarting the server may be worth a shot perhaps?

No, pool size hitting 95% (default) will cause new backup runs to
stop, but not the service itself.

> Possibly restarting the server may be worth a shot perhaps?

You haven't said anything about what Linux distro you use or how your
installation differs from the standard package or what changed at the
time it stopped working. If it is CentOS or Fedora, my first guess
is always selinux for mysterious failures, especially if you have
moved something to a non-standard location or mounted a different
filesystem.

Re: [BackupPC-users] 504 Gateway Time-out on Backuppc web interface

2014-09-03 Thread Tom Fallon
Thanks Les,

Apologies, I thought i had included server information in my first mail. I
have 3 servers running which are all running Ubuntu 12.04 with backuppc
installed from the standard repositories. Nothing has changed on the server
with the problem to best of my knowledge.

I've inherited this from previous admin who I am fairly sure followed best
practice when setting up. I am not an admin but have been charged with
looking after the Linux boxes in his absence.

I have been checking the web gui on all 3 boxes daily to check on what's
being backed up etc while I get my head round things. This box has been
working fine up to few days ago.

Re: [BackupPC-users] 504 Gateway Time-out on Backuppc web interface

2014-09-03 Thread Carl Cravens
I'm assuming Ubuntu is close enough to stock Debian. The main BackupPC log is
in /var/lib/backuppc/log. If you need to look at compressed logs, use
BackupPC_zcat, as the developer didn't use standard gzip-compatible compression.

My startup section looks like this:

2014-09-03 14:00:48 Reading hosts file
2014-09-03 14:00:48 BackupPC started, pid 19467
2014-09-03 14:00:48 Running BackupPC_trashClean (pid=19485)
2014-09-03 14:00:48 Next wakeup is 2014-09-04 00:00:00

I expect if BackupPC is getting an error, you'll see it this log.

If it's failing silently, try starting it outside the init script so
start-stop-daemon doesn't eat its output...

sudo -u backuppc /usr/share/backuppc/bin/BackupPC

...and see what output you get.

Hi Carl thanks for the input.

I've checked /var/lib/backuppc/log/LOG and this is the most recent
output. One thing which was done on this box was to remove a host from
the GUI (when it was working) and then to remove the backup files from
/var/lib/backuppc/pc/

2014-09-03 12:30:48 Reading hosts file

So potentially removing the host has stuffed something up.

2014-09-04 Thread Tom Fallon
I have checked /etc/backuppc/hosts file and that matches what I would
expect to see - all the hosts except the one which was removed.

All hostnames are entered as DNS names and set as 0 for DHCP and with
backuppc as the user.

There is a hosts.old file there from around a month ago - same content
barring the one removed host.

Re: [BackupPC-users] 504 Gateway Time-out on Backuppc web interface

2014-09-07 Thread Tom Fallon
Not sure if this will add to the same thread or create a new one so just
to recap.

On one of our backuppc servers the Web GUI has been failing to launch
with a 504 Gateway timeout error showing up.

One responder asked if backuppc service was running which I checked with

pgrep backuppc

this showed nothing initially but then realised the process is listed as
BackupPC not all lower case.

On trying service backuppc restart I get this response

:~$ sudo service backuppc restart
  * Restarting
backuppc... No
process in pidfile '/var/run/backuppc/BackupPC.pid' found running; none
killed.

If I then run pgrep BackupPC the number of pids has incremented by 1

Running ps -ef | grep BackupPC shows these pids are all as follows:

backuppc 20340 1 0 14:58 ?00:00:00 /usr/bin/perl
/usr/share/backuppc/bin/BackupPC -d

Just to test things I tried killing all the running BackupPC PIDs and
when all done I could then access the web interface but got error:

Error: Unable to connect to BackupPC Server
This CGI Script (/backuppc/index.cgi) is unable to connect to the
BackupPC server on port -1.
Perhaps the BackupPC server is not running or there is a configuration
error. Please report this to your Sys Admin.

On running service backuppc start I can no longer connect to the web GUI
at all.

This is all on Ubuntu 12.04 server identical in every other way to 2
other working BackupPC Servers in production.

Only change of any note was to remove a host which no longer needs
backed up from both /etc/backuppc/hosts, the config file for that host
from /etc/backuppc and from /var/lib/backuppc/pc/.

I've compared settings between the problem server and 2 working ones and
can see no differnence between them in either config file content or the
permissions on those files. At a loss as to how apparently running the
backuppc service blocks access to the web interface.

I've been googling this issue for a few days now and come up with nada
so anyone else out there with suggestions is welcome to chime in.

cheers.
