In my case, that's not true. What appears to be happening is that
BackupPC has no trouble contacting rsyncd, but then rsyncd gets confused
and complains about perfoming an operation on the wrong socket. Both
networks actually work perfectly well by themselves and in tendem, so I'm
speculating that rsyncd/cygwin has a problem knowing which network it
should be responding to.

It's definitely not the case -- Windows' file permissions can be
essentially arbitrary, and there's no concept of a "root" user -- where
there is a Backup user or group, it generally has no special meaning
outside policies, and there's nothing to stop a user with rights to revoke
privileges. I'll look around later this week for a useful resource on the
topic.

Since smb works and this seems to be a name resolution issue, maybe DNS is set
up wrong on the other NIC - since this is a per-nic configuration in windows.

Where might I find some readable documentation on how windows permissions
actually work? I was under the impression that the Backup Operators group
always had access while an Administrator might have to change ownership to get
it - but I have a machine where that doesn't seem to be the case.

After a little more poking around, it seems the problem goes away if one
of the networks is disabled. Next thing for me to try: binding rsync to
the correct network and leaving both active.

At the risk of stating what you already know, Administrators in Windows
don't automatically have access to everything (unlike root) and it's
possible for a user to revoke access to the Administrator account or to
the Administrator group. If you have the user's credentials, you should
be able to grant permission to either or both.

That may have been it -- the machine in question did indeed have access
to two networks.

I ended up getting around it by going back to smb-based backups on just
this one client, and to get around the permission issues that
continually elude me (why a member of group Administrators can't read a
user's entire directory contents is beyond me), I ended up using the
main user's login/pass for the authentication :-P Fugly, I know, but at
least I can back up his files now.

Re: [BackupPC-users] cygwin rsync "getpeerbyname" error on only one machine

2009-09-01 Thread Michael Stowe

I can offer two clues:

1) I experienced this on an XP system where a personal firewall had been
installed, but turned off. Deinstalling the personal firewall (and
turning on the built-in one) solved the problem.

2) I recently experienced this on an XP laptop after upgrading
cygwin/rsync after several hundred successful backups. After downgrading,
the problem has gone away. I can only speculate why this machine is
unique, but perhaps it's a clue that it has two active networks.

[BackupPC-users] cygwin rsync "getpeerbyname" error on only one machine

2009-08-27 Thread Jim Leonard
I have several windows clients (XP, vista, Win7) and on only ONE of the
machines (vista) I am seeing this when I try to connect to rsync from
*outside* the machine:

2009/08/27 23:20:10 [5840] rsync: getpeername on fd3 failed: Socket
operation on non-socket (108)
2009/08/27 23:20:10 [5840] rsync error: error in socket IO (code 10) at
/home/lapo/packaging/rsync-3.0.4-1/src/rsync-3.0.4/clientname.c(168)
[receiver=3.0.4]

Connections from localhost are fine.

So I've looked at the code for this function and it looks like it's a
translation from IPv6 to IPv4, but I've disabled IPv6 and it's still
happening.

Any ideas?
