I found your errors.txt file in the archives -- didn't seem to make it to my
own email client (weird).

Is it correct that tar is supposed to be getting 238 GB to deal with? The
action seems to be happening in BackupPC_tarExtract . Maybe you can find out
what its command line is, and try the same command line, manually.

Other than that, I don't know how to track this down. Sorry for that.

Good luck,

Replacing the ping with an echo is pretty terrible advice. While
Windows blocks pings by default, it's easy enough to turn on, and
there's rarely a good reason not to.

Of course, the most likely explanation is that the system you're trying
to back up is _unreachable_, which is impossible to give a blanket
solution for, but fix that first. Chances are, the IP changed, or the
same thing that made the system no longer responding to pings is making
it no longer respond to CIFS traffic.

Did you test them by ssh'ing to one of the targets as root, starting

I would still check out your keys. On your backuppc server, su to your
backuppc user and run:

ssh root@one-of-your-servers-to-be-backed-up whoami

and you should not get anything returned but root. You might get prompted
to re-accept the SSH key - accept it and run again and you should get just
root again.

Or, if you get a different error, fix that and you should be set.

IIRC the web interface pulls the config from the server. So
/etc/init.d/backuppc reload, or send a reload config message to the
server using BackupPC_serverMesg should do the trick.

Not sure why you are seeing items that don't look like errors in the

 Closer review of each entry:

all the lines extra non-error lines are directories, thus a size 0.
Is that what it's seeing as an error? Even though the files contained
 within are backed up?

Also, there a a few others buried within that are files:

 tarExtract: Got file '*./Users/BKeadle/AppData/Local/Microsoft/Internet

and they are in fact backed up - so why reported as an error? I'm not
sure how to identify, the actual 111 errors reported.

Probably somewhere in CGI/View.pm wherever your package installed.
But I think it just does some filtering on the same Xferlog you get in
the full view, and I'd be more concerned about eliminating the errors
than why you are seeing some non-error lines.

The filter IIRC expects either lines beginning with spaces or lines
not starting with spaces to be error lines. If you have your debug
settings turned up, there are a lot of lines that aren't errors (they
are debug output) but that aren't filtered in the error view.

It's been a while since I noted this issue so I don't remeber the
details but it may explain the discrepency.

OK, comparing the full log with the error log, it *looks* like the Errors

It looks like legitimate errors are left justified in the log and other

The filter IIRC expects either lines beginning with spaces or lines
not starting with spaces to be error lines. If you have your debug
settings turned up, there are a lot of lines that aren't errors (they
are debug output) but that aren't filtered in the error view.

It's been a while since I noted this issue so I don't remeber the
details but it may explain the discrepency.

Probably somewhere in CGI/View.pm wherever your package installed.
But I think it just does some filtering on the same Xferlog you get in
the full view, and I'd be more concerned about eliminating the errors
than why you are seeing some non-error lines.

I'm thinking that maybe somebody has modified the command to backup
files, and they might have added a -v or some verbose flag, which is
causing additional non-standard output to get logged, and thus confusing
the errors only filter. Can anyone suggest whether those lines are
normal (for the standard non-error log file)? Personally, I have no
idea, I haven't used smb as a backup method, but it looks like it would
fit...

Adam

The NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED is the one to worry about, especially on

expect some number of locked file conflicts, though.

So from this, I can build my Exclude list. Most of the
NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED
are Windows 7 Junctions, which I understand would get this error, thus I
want to exclude them. However, I'm having difficulty getting the exclude
to work. As shown above, it's trying to backup pagefile.sys despite my
exclusions set, as shown here:

'c$' = [
'Temp\\*',

'Temporary Internet Files\\*',
'\\pagefile.sys',
'\\hiberfil.sys',
'IconCache.db',
'~*',
'\\RECYCLER',

'Thumbs.db',
'IconCache.db',
'Cache*',
'cache*',
'\\$Recycle.Bin\\*',
'\\MSOCache\\*',
'\\System Volume Information\\*',
'\\Documents and Settings\\*'
  ]

So what am I missing with my syntax? I originally *just* had
'pagefile.sys'. When that didn't work, I specified the backslash prefix.

Try using a forward slash rather than the double backslashes. It's much
easier to read and Samba will translate for you. For example:
'/pagefile.sys'

Also, the share name is probably case-sensitive. This is most likely
your real problem.

Try using a forward slash rather than the double backslashes. It's much

 '/pagefile.sys'

Also, the share name is probably case-sensitive. This is most likely
 your real problem.

Re: [BackupPC-users] BackupPC Errors log

2012-07-06 Thread Bryan Keadle (.net)
So now that I have a common list of ACCESS_DENIED, I want to add that to
the computername.pl file, instead of manually entering through the GUI.
But when I do that, I don't see the changes I've added, but instead see
the default settings. Is there some magic to getting making changes to the
config.pl for the host outside the GUI to stick?

/bin/perl is not a common location for the perl binary. /usr/bin/perl

This sounds like a PATH problem somewhere. Where are you running the commands?
Are you in the bin dir of BackupPC? Are you starting the commands with ./ or

installation problem. BackupPC_Admin expects Apache to authenticate
 the user
and pass their user name into this script as the REMOTE_USER

 Can anyone help me

Read the docs. Setting up authentication is explained in step 8 of

You don't need mod_perl for BackupPC to work, using mod_perl only
speeds up using the web interface. You do need to setup
authentication though. Scroll past the mod_perl instructions in step
8 and continue reading where it says: BackupPC_Admin requires that
users are authenticated by Apache.

What error shows up in the logs? If you are using smb as the
xfermethod you need to have the right username and password.
For tar or rsyncd you need to have passwordless access set up
with ssh keys.
