If you trust Bacula itself, use the show job=xxx command. Part of the

which tells you all Bacula knows about the schedule. In this case, it's 
a simple one: Daily at 8:25, each day of each month, all weekdays except 
Tuesday, each week of the month, and each week of the year. The job is 
started when _all_ of the criteria match, as far as I know.


Bumping the clock around on the machine seems reasonable, but ugly. 
File system activity can also be scripted outside of the system.


Somehow I don't understand what file system activity has to do with the 
schedules...

It seems to me that setting up a restricted console to use from the
specific client might be something in the direction of what you want.

As far as I know it restricts the view that the user at the client sees -
maybe not the fd itself

Looking for a way to limit the FD view for restores to exclude all
other client records but those related specifically to that FD.

Seems to me the mechanism would be an SQL query, but unable to find
any documentation on how to invoke a client specific query. Couple
that with my complete noobness as it relates to MySQL and we've got
trouble in River City.

Anyone already done figured this one out and would be willing to show
the way?

[Bacula-users] Timing out if tape not available

Hi,

Whilst fiddling with my Bacula config, a couple of times I've come in in 
the morning to find that for whatever reason the tape I thought was 
available was not in fact so.  This means that any backup job due to run 
after the blocked one fails to run.  Is there any way that I can get 
Bacula to time out & fail the blocked job in these circumstances?  The 
FD/SD Connect Timeout config options don't do the job, as connection 
with FD or SD isn't the problem.

I'd have to change the backup type to Incremental. Is restoring from 
incremental backups easy with Bacula?

Also, my database would become HUGE as we'd have 50 boxes being backed up.


Define "huge" - mine is currently 17Gb, backing up 2 servers containing 
26Tb/10 million files and another 15-20-odd machine backups (a lot of 
our desktop boxes are identically configured, so we only keep one master 
copy.)


Not a problem under MySQL _provided_ you define more than 4Gb or table 
space under MyISAM (although I believe Postgres would be better suited to 
such large tables - just haven't had time to try and convert over yet)

Well, I wouldn't reinvent the wheel.

Why don't you query the catalog for pruned volumes, store that list, 
delete the corresponding files, and use the list to send the proper 
delete commands, via bconsole, to the DIR?

I would like use my script with XML-RPC and give permissons to do some actions 
to a group of operator, My target is do not left they use the bconsole (and 
do not give them any lesson about its use)

And sometimes actions generated by bconsole took a big amount of time, it is 
faster to delete an entire pool than a volume

If you are going to program it in perl, then I suggest you look at the Bacula
source code to see exactly what it does.  Start with the function
db_delete_media_record() in src/cats/sql_delete.c (called by delete_volume()
in src/dirs/ua_cmds.c).

I think you're operating under a misunderstanding.

The FD never looks at the Catalog database.  All it sees are data
streams to and from the SD, and instructions from the Director on what
to back up.  It hasn't the slightest idea what files exist in the
Catalog from other clients, and has no way to find out.

If you want to restrict what the *owner of that machine* can restore to
it, simply install a restricted console authorized to see only records
for that client.  Restricted consoles are clearly documented in the
manual.  For that matter, the machine owner cannot restore anything out
of the catalog on his own in the first place without having a Console on
the machine that's been granted permission to do so.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

My goal is for the 'owner' of the client machine to do their own  
restores. When connecting to the director from the client side wx- 
console, the end user is presented with all the variables (though  
locked down via ACL entries specific to that console (configured of  
course via the dir.conf file.)


To minimize major confusion, I'm desiring to limit the catalog view  
specific to the client machine. It appears now that all catalogs,  
pools, jobs et al. are presented via the standard query.sql file.  
Since the dir daemon knows which client console is connecting, is  
there a way to limit the view that particular console receives?


 Am I still operating under a misunderstanding or am I getting it  
correct now?

I'm using 1.36.3 on a Debian server. I'm writing all my backups to disk.

I was having problems with backups waiting on volumes because I had a
full disk.  I have since converted my old disk to use LVM and have
added another drive to volume.  So I now have over 100 GB free.
However, this morning I found that my backups are still waiting for an
appendable volume.  This is what I get when I do a 'list volumes'.
I cut everything but one client and it's incrementals which aren't
running because of this problem.

That didn't seem to work so I assume I used it incorrectly.

I really need to get his fixed so if someone can help me understand
what it is I need to do to fix this problem I would really appreciate
it.

[Bacula-users] port 9102 not open on localhost

Bacula cannot connect to local-fd on port 9102. With bacula started I can
telnet to port 9101 and 9103, but not 9102. I have turned firewalling off,
but it does not help.

This is on a Knoppix box that I uninstalled the bacula client from and did
a full install of Bacula using bianaries.

Everything was running fine for a long time and now I'm in a situation 
where I'm not sure what to do.  I tried recycling volume 7 using this 
command from the manual (replaced volume with 7):

*purge jobs volume

*That didn't seem to work so I assume I used it incorrectly.

I really need to get his fixed so if someone can help me understand what 
it is I need to do to fix this problem I would really appreciate it.


The volume status in the catalog is broken. Your output shows nothing, 
empty strings, blanks or whatever. Fix the catalog so that the volume 
status is "Used", "Full", "Recycle" or "Purged" (the latter might be the 
right solution for you) and Bacula should accept the volumes again.

If port 9102 is being used by something else, you can run the FD on a
different port.

You can use the --with-baseport= option in the configure script when
installing Bacula.  So if =8100, the DIR will run on 8101, FD on
8102, and SD on 8103.

Otherwise, you can edit your *.conf files, /etc/system, and Bacula
startup script to run the daemons on the desired ports.

I guess I need to test more than just the schedule.  I need to test the
logic behind Incremental->Full mode promotion code.  I need to test the
Prune/Auto-Recycle code/behavior.

I tried that, but nothing changed. I finally copied bacula-fd.default.conf
over bacula-fd.conf, and everything started working.

[Bacula-users] automatic mount

Hello list !

I'm using bacula 1.36.3 under debian linux (testing) with a 2.4 kernel.
My tape drive is a Sony SDX-500C (SCSI).

The backup machine runs for several months now without problem. At the 
moment when Bacula wants another tape I manually eject the tape, put 
another one in the tape drive and enter a mount request in bconsole.


At the end of the month I take my holidays, and the people who are 
supposed to change the tapes should have nothing more to do than eject 
the tape and insert a new one, without having to enter a mount request 
in bconsole.


After reading the manual, I added this in the device ressource in 
bacula-sd.conf file:

VolumePollInterval = 1 hour
CloseOnPoll = yes
OfflineOnUnmount = yes

but it doesn't work as expected... The tape is correctly ejected, but 
when I put another one and try a *mount in the console (for testing) I 
got the "3001 Device /dev/st0 is mounted; doing acquire." message... but 
nothing is done.
After several minutes, I get a message : "08-Feb 17:13 phoenix-sd: 
phoenix-job.2006-02-08_17.06.49 Warning: Couldn't rewind device /dev/st0 
ERR=dev.c:406 Rewind error on /dev/st0. ERR=Input/output error."


(I runned the btape test sucessfully.)

Any idea what I did wrong ?

Ok, I understand... You wouldn't take our word instead of testing for 
yourself? ;-)


Ok, what I'm usually doing is the following:

Set up jobs with a test file set where you can add and delete files to 
your liking... cron in conjunction with something like 'dd 
if=/dev/urandom bs=16k count=1 of=/tmp/bactest/`date 
--iso-8601=minutes`' is a great tool, by the way.


By the way, when testing this sort of stuff, keep in mind that Bacula 
uses the unix time stamps to determine which files to store - together 
with mv'in files to different directories this can become a problem!


Then, set up your test jobs and pools in a way that automatic pruning 
happens after short retention times - that way, you can (still?) 
automatically remove jobs Bacula would need for later 
incremental/differential backups. You'll easily notice the job 
promotions in the job reports.


Anyway, with such a setup and minimal manual intervention you've got 
covered the job promotion and the automatic pruning / recycling.


The schedules are quite separate from this part, and you can try to make 
them as complicated as you like - I can't give you much advise there 
(regarding your original question), because I try to keep schedules 
simple :-)


Ok, I admit this doesn't exactly answer your original question, but 
perhaps it's helpful...

I’m currently trying to restore a filesystem on a production
Linux PostgreSQL database server.  I’ve been doing weekly full
backups with daily incrementals for some time now using an Exabyte 480
autoloader.

 

The files to be restored span 4 tapes.  The restore
process was going smoothly until it hit the end of the first tape.  As
expected, it reached the end of the tape and detected the EOF:

[Bacula-users] slow performance when backing up server itself (compress+tls)

I've noticed that when my backup server (running 1.38.2) is backing up 
itself, the performance is terrible.  The load average on the box goes 
through the roof, and I'm getting something like 60 bytes per second.  
The backup server is running on an older 1.7GHz machine, but still it 
should be plenty of CPU for this simple task.


This happened after I switched to TLS.  Basically, I simply configured 
all clients to use TLS, including file daemon on backup server itself 
(not really needed, but ended up being that way).  I also had 
compression turned on.  Lot of job for the CPU, but it should still 
yield way more than 60 bytes per second.


After I disabled TLS and compression, I got something like 1.5 MB/sec.  
When I had it with compression-only, the performance was also good 
(don't remember exact numbers).  Any idea why TLS is slowing it down so 
much?  I know that same CPU needs to do encrypt and decrypt 
simultaniously, but it shouldn't slow it down so much.  All my other 
clients (couple of them running on old sub-1GHz PIII boxes) don't seem 
to suffer from this that much (the slowest ones go to around 100-200 
kB/sec with TLS and compression).

No, it restored more files - EOF is, Bacula terms, not an End of File or 
End of Volume but just a file mark on the tape. That's used to create 
(comparatively) short tape segments which can be easily found on tape 
when positioning the tape.

Very very bad I guess :-(

To me, this looks as though there is no tape label written on tape.

You can try to unmount the tape from bconsole, and on a shell
- use mtx to load the tape
- use btape to verify the tape label
- use bls to show what kinds of blocks are on the tape. When I just 
tried this, I found a segmentation fault, by he way. Bug report is 
underway... Anyway, the command I'd use would be 'bls -c 
/etc/bacula/bacula-sd.conf -kLvp /dev/nst2 -V 04' and IIRC that 
shows you which blocks Bacula recognizes.


If that all shows that the tape does not start with a Bacula label, 
you're in trouble... it might be possible to extract data using bextract 
or even using a hacked bextract, though. After all, the format of 
Baculas storage blocks is known.

Catalog backup to separate pool after completion of a Full or 
Differential backup.

This had been working reliably for about a year. A couple of months 
back I had to reboot for a kernel upgrade, and when the system came back up the 
autochanger was no longer working _at all_. That turned out to be simple, the 
permissions of /dev/sg1 (The autochanger device) had been changed back to 
root:root mode 650. After fixing the permissions (root:tape mode 660), the 
changer began working again _sort of_.


The problem I am experiencing, is that bacula refuses to issue the 
commands to change the tapes when going from either a Full or Differential 
backup to a Catalog backup job, or when going from a Catalog backup job to a 
Differential. (Catalog -> Full never happens in my backup schedule so that is 
unknown). The strange thing is that bacula changes the tapes automatically when 
going from a Differential Backup to a Full Backup.

I get similar results when going from Full -> Catalog or from Catalog -> 
Differential.

[Bacula-users] naive question: upgrade from 1.38.2 to latest and still restore old backups?

This is (hopefully) a silly question, but if I upgrade from
bacula 1.38.2 to the latest version, will it still be able to restore from
backups made with the previous version?  Will the 1.38.2 catalog be readable in
the latest version?

For the sake of the list archives (no mention so far), the:

Dell PowerVault 110T and 120T

(the former simply being a desktop model, and the later being a
rack-mount model), work well with Bacula 1.38.5 on NetBSD 3.0_STABLE and
FreeBSD 5.3-p26.  They both pass btape(8) tests.  The drives are
DLT7000.  They are OEM.  The manufacturer is Quantum. The configs are:

The only major difference being the tape device name differences between
NetBSD and FreeBSD.  Also, the 120T requires a "High Voltage

Yes and yes, no configuration, tape format or catalog changes took place 
in between.

Sorry to keep flooding the list...but I live for this stuff>:}

Situation:

1) I have multiple servers, different platforms, different functions
2) Some servers have common paths to be backed up (/etc, /var/log, etc.)
3) Some have platform/function-specific paths: (/var/adm, /opt/oracle)
4) A "Job" can only define one "fileset"
5) Per the manual: "If you want to backup multiple FileSets on the same
   Client or multiple Clients, you must define a Job for each one."
6) Multiple "Jobs" can be assigned to the same schedule
7) Multiple "Jobs" can be assigned to the same storage medium
8) Thus, multiple jobs could be started in sequence/parallel 

As an Amanda user, I'm accustomed dot a 1:1:1:1? ratio of 
 ...  media/storage:schedule:clients:paths.  I'm accustomed to the idea
that the job will start, fetch all of the files in the "disklist" to a
local disk spool, then write them to a single volume.

Now I have to bring my thinking back into alignment with Bacula.

The bacula-dir.conf syntax is perpetually more convenient.  I like the
abstraction between jobs/schedules/filesets/clients.  It's resembles
data modeling of an RDBMS.  Therein, ideally I don't want to have to
define

... a "file set" for 
... for each client
 for each job.

Because that just leads to duplication and lack of flexibility.
However, Per #8 above, I'm trying to setup:

 two jobs...
  same client...
   different filesets
same schedule   
 same DefJobs
  and thus the same schedule/pool/storage

the same might apply to:
  four jobs
   two clients
one shared fileset
 one client-specific fileset per 
  same schedule
   same DefJobs

But in either configuration, the jobs launch at the same time in the
scheduler and run in series/serial.  Thus, if the database is purged,
and each job is configured as incremental, and there is no record of a
full backup, each job is promoted to Full, so the first job runs
completes, then asks for the next tape in the pool.

This is not the expected behavior (imho).  I'd expect it to consolidate
all jobs that are schedule to run at the same time, with the same
storage, same pool, same priority, to the same volume.

may be the problem I met has been already discussed, but I could not find
something in the mail-list archive.

after successfull full backup of the windows 2000 server, I tried to restore
some files and got the next error:
