[Bacula-users] Bacula under Windows 2003 64 bit.
Greetings, We are looking at introducing 6 new Windows 2003 Enterprise 64 Servers into our business in the not too distant future. As the rest of the servers (Mostly Redhat EL3 with a few FreeBSD boxes and a couple of 32 bit Windows servers) are backed up using Bacula we intend to use it on these new beasts as well. Has anyone had experience running Bacula under 64 bit windows? Are 64 bit binaries needed and/or available for Bacula? We'd only need to run File Daemons on the new boxes with backups getting done from our existing Director. We are currently running 1.38.5 but I'm planning on upgrading to 1.40 when it comes out (If I had more time, I'd be upgraded to the latest 1.39 Beta version already to help testing it) Also, if anyone has any information on known limits in the Windows Bacula client (Path lengths, etc) that would be good - one of the other staff here has vague recollections of a maximum path length of 164 characters for restores. Any and all information appreciated, Cheers, Troy Daniels Systems Administrator iTouch Australia (pty) ltd. - Using Tomcat but need to do more? Need to support web services, security? [Bacula-users] Using the "Maximum Volumes" Option to Manage Pools
I use an auto changer and four pools of tapes for my backups; Daily, Weekly, Monthly, and Scratch. I want to set the option "Maximum Volumes = 32" for my Weekly pool because my Weekly backup uses four tapes and I want to keep eight weeks worth of tapes in my rotation. My Weekly pool grew to 40 tapes and now I'm trying to reduce the pool to 32 tapes. But what happens if I fill my auto changer with four Weekly tapes, four Daily tapes, and two Scratch tapes and Bacula wants a fifth Weekly tape because one of the Weekly tapes filled up or prompts a write error? If the Weekly pool already has 32 tapes, I predict Bacula won't add a Scratch tape to the Weekly pool because then the Weekly pool would have 33 tapes, thus exceeding the "Maximum Volumes = 32" option. What is the best way to keep my Weekly pool from growing too large? Thanks, Dave - Using Tomcat but need to do more? Need to support web services, security? [Bacula-users] Did "Max Start Delay" screw up my backups?
Summary: I added "Max Run Time = 27h" and "Max Start Delay = 61h" to my job definitions and scheduled my weekend "Full" backup to begin Friday at 7:00 PM. As a result, five jobs got canceled and my spooling size changed from 5.0GB to 2.6GB after the first job was canceled. But why? Details: I have this one machine running Windows NT 4.0. It's backup is very inconsistent. The first time I backed it up it completed 70GB in 12 hours. Then I fixed a bunch of permission denied warnings by granting permissions to the denied directories. Now the backups take anywhere from 19 to 55 hours to backup 80GB, which really screws up my scheduling. Until I can sort things out with this machine, I added "Max Run Time = 27h" and "Max Start Delay = 61h" to my job definitions. I did this so that no job will run for more than 27 hours and if a job has not started by Monday morning, forget about it. I normally run 15 jobs (generally one job per machine) over the weekend, all of which were scheduled to run at 7:00 PM. The first four jobs ran great. Then my problem child (my NT 4.0 machine) began its job. Sure enough, after 27 hours, Bacula marked the job to be canceled. So far so good. Things worked as planned. But then, the next four jobs that were queued after the NT 4.0 job were cancelled too. They didn't even start. They were just indicated as cancelled. Why? Weird though, the last six jobs that were queued ran and completed successfully. Why did the cancellation of the NT 4.0 job take down the four jobs that were lined up behind it? After I discovered those four jobs were canceled, I manually ran them and all four completed OK. Another oddity, as soon as the NT 4.0 job was canceled by Bacula, the spooling sized dropped from 5.0GB to 2,621,416,235 bytes for all remaining jobs. Why did the spooling size change? Thanks in advance for any comments. I can post additional information as requested. I just realized those four jobs that were strangely canceled had a priority of 11. All the jobs but the last six have a priority of 11 (and one job as a priority of 10, but that one finish early, in fourth place). The last six have priorities of 13, 13, 13, 13, 14, and 15. Is this a bug? Since eight jobs with a priority of 11 were all scheduled to run Friday at 7:00 PM, did Bacula think these eight jobs actually started at 7:00 PM Friday and then killed all remaining jobs after 27 hours. I'm under the impression the "Max Start Delay" option counts when a job actually started and not from when the job was scheduled to start. -Dave bacula-dir.conf Description: bacula-dir.conf - Using Tomcat but need to do more? [Bacula-users] bacula and autochanger problems
Hi all, This is a rather lengthy e-mail, and there may be more than one configuration error. Please feel free to respond to only a piece of it. Configuration files and permissions info are at the end of the e-mail. I have been trying to get bacula to work for almost three days now; I have read through the manual and some mailing list archives, and I hope I'm only missing something small. I have a Dell PowerVault 128T autochanger with a single LTO1 drive and a 20 slot library; I'm using CentOS4.4 (RHEL4). The Unix commands mt and mtx work without problems. I also checked the mtx-changer section of the manual (http://dna.dbi.udel.edu/manuals/bacula/Autochanger_Support.html#SECTION0002915000) and the commands work OK except for the following: [EMAIL PROTECTED] bacula]# ./mtx-changer /dev/sg1 unload usage: mtx-changer ctl-device command [slot archive-device drive-index] Insufficient number of arguments arguments given. Command expected 5 arguments I have also checked the timing of the autochanger, and I don't seem to need any additional wait or sleep statements to get the drive to work. I have tested the drive using btape (test, autochanger, fill). The first two commands work OK, but the fill test does not properly change tapes, even though it says it should be aware of the autochanger. It simply asks me to change the tape and then overwrites the first tape. Is this a problem with my configuration or is it a bug? I take it you have now been in contact with them and they can at least help determine which Swiss structure is better for a structure that is going to own copyrights, yes? I am in total agreement with your reasoning, but the copyright ownership issues frighten me. [Bacula-users] Res: Help needed: Unable to connect to Director daemon
You MUST edit the configuration files. Leaving them untouched after installation just won't work.Do you REALLY REALLY need to compile your own binaries? Why not use the binaries available at http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=50727&package_id=76408 - including the GUI programs, gconsole and wxconsole?Regards,Georger- Mensagem original De: Jayashri Kuntamukkala <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>Para: bacula-users@lists.sourceforge.netEnviadas: Segunda-feira, 16 de Outubro de 2006 10:24:53Assunto: [Bacula-users] Help needed: Unable to connect to Director daemonHello all.. [Bacula-users] Restoring old tapes
Hi, I am right now rebuilding the catalog for old tapes that are marked purged in the database. This seems to take a very long time (5 tapes). My concern is now, that the next scheduled backup job will lead to purging the catalog again. I found the part in the manual that suggests to set the volstatus using update right after using bscan. But what will happen if bscan is still running and the next backup job is started? In my case bscan is working on tapes while the daily backup goes to disks. So there is no physical reason to prevent running both jobs (bscan and bacula) in parallel. Do I need to do something in advance to prevent purging my job data or is this case handled by bacula? I am using Bacula 1.36 on debian stable. Thanks and cheers, Steph. - Using Tomcat but need to do more? Need to support web services, security? I know that we might loose some data if we have a server crash or hardware failure. However, it is not a "major disaster". Turning off disc write-cache, mount ext3 sync, sync NFS-export and turning off NFS-client-cache isn't an option, performance is just too low. I agree that it is slower to write to disc, *but* as the write-performance to disc is less than 9 Mbyte/s (>50% compression rate), the difference might be hard to measure. Our discs sustain >60Mbyte/s and provided efficient DMA to disc, the slowdown might not be significant. BM> Additionally, the point was to _not_ allow it to use cache for the disk BM> ops, which I didn't communicate clearly -- my apologies. OK, I will not test this, as it is a production file-server. I can't turn off all disc-caching without scheduling a service-window, and frankly, I don't see the point in this test. What are you trying to test? Why? / Anders - Using Tomcat but need to do more?
