[Bacula-users] compiling Bat on FreeBSD
Hi. I noticed today that bacula-server-devel and bacula-client-devel ports were updated to 2.1.26. I was hoping that Bat will be available in bacula-client-devel, but well, it isn't. I'd very much like to try Bat though, so I tried putting "CONFIGURE_ARGS+= --enable-bat" into bacula-server-devel's Makefile, but as I experienced this is not the way to do it ;) Is it very difficult to integrate Bat into FreeBSD ports? -- Silver - This SF.net email is sponsored by DB2 Express Download DB2 Express C - the FREE version of DB2 express and take control of your XML. [Bacula-users] Tape full or other problem?
Hi all, Yesterday I ran a test backup and made it through about a dozen machines. I eventually ended up with this error as the last one that worked was despooling to tape: 11-Jul 21:40 devel2-sd: Committing spooled data to Volume "Monthly0001". Despooling 12,781,472,694 bytes ... 11-Jul 21:42 devel2-dir: Max configured use duration exceeded. Marking Volume "Monthly0001" as Used. That one I assume is a problem where I only let the tape be used for a day but the backup took more than 24 hours. I can fix that. 11-Jul 21:54 devel2-sd: Despooling elapsed time = 00:13:27, Transfer rate = 15.83 M bytes/second This seems to indicate it despooled? 11-Jul 21:54 devel2-sd: Sending spooled attrs to the Director. Despooling 64,878,705 bytes ... But then it looks like it's doing it again? 11-Jul 21:55 h14-fd: h14.2007-07-10_20.41.53 Fatal error: job.c:1749 Comm error with SD. bad response to Append Data. ERR=Resource temporarily unavailable And this one is a mystery. I have a 100GB LTO-2 tape loaded, and the "Last Volume Bytes" figure below shows that only 46GB have been written to the volume so far. I'm also unclear on what happened to the data. After this the spool directory was empty, but it doesn't look like it was actually written to tape. 11-Jul 21:55 devel2-dir: h14.2007-07-10_20.41.53 Error: Bacula 2.0.1 (12Jan07): 11-Jul-2007 21:55:27 Here's some more info showing the amount of data written in this session and the total written to the tape. ... I suspect that the problem is due to linux not re-initialising its internal state regarding the size of the DVD image when the write has completed. If that is the case then kern.log will have some errors about block numbers being greater than the device size. If you have a DVD drive that will eject and reload the DVD without manual intervention (i.e. it is a motorised drawer on the drive) then you can comment out the following line from /etc/bacula/scripts/dvd-handler growcmd += " -use-the-force-luke=notray" Just put a # at the start of the line to comment it out. Well, I've restored a few individual files now and then and also did a few test restores as suggested in the user guide so I am quite familiar with the routine and it always worked just fine for me. But restoring 50 something thousand files is definitely something different. I also never tried to emulate a real world file usage with my test backups/restores, hence my question. You are right of course, this should have been done long ago. > It cannot be said enough times, you don't have a backup system until you > have restored data from it. Not to undermine your perfectly valid advice but let me note that we are living in a non perfect world, so even if you invest tremendous amounts of time and effort into testing your setup, you could never be sure you've tested all factors that may affect it in every possible real life situation. So even if all of your test restores work seamlessly this does not 100% mean your really critical one will. As usual, this is a question of reasonable compromise... Thanks also for everyone who replied to my personal address, your help was most appreciated! Cheers, Ivan P.S. My restore is at 40GB and counting, we'll see soon... I just did a couple test restores (one Linux server and one Windows 2003 server, just a few files on each), and naturally bacula did it perfectly. I had tested restores right after set up and installation, but that was about a year ago, and since then I have not tested very often, nor have I had occasion do do a REAL restore (knock on my wooden head), so I had become complacent. I feel good seeing that the restore system does still actually restore. ;-) Michael -- The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. It cannot be said enough times, you don't have a backup system until you have restored data from it. Becoming familiar with restore and doing some trial restores should be part of getting any backup system set up. It should also be a periodic routine to check your backup system and confirm that you can still restore. You want to confirm that your system works, but you also want the first hand personal experience so that you are comfortable and confident when the time comes that you really need to do it. [Bacula-users] How is a barcode reader supposed to work in Bacula?
I'm a little unsure how its used in Bacula. If its for automatic labeling of tapes, or ??? If I issue an update slots command in bconsole, I get this output, strange that there is an illegal character. Does anyone know how this output is supposed to look. Just for comparison I have the output of mtx-changer and mtx also. Should I use the barcodes as my Volume names in my Pools? No, I'm not planning on changing the license to forbid anyone from creating and distributing Bacula. Bacula source is under a fiduciary license agreement with FSFE in order to guarantee that it remains Open Source. Anyone that wants to distribute Bacula can continue to do so as they are now. The only exception is that without some sort of agreement, they couldn't distribute binaries made by us. At this point, this is just an idea -- nothing is decided. So that there is no later confusion on this subject, there *is* a current licensing problem with Bacula brought up by Debian since the GPL v2 and the OpenSSL licenses are incompatible. The current Bacula license is pure GPL v2 with no modifications. I am discussing with Debian and FSFE modifying it by going to GPL v3 or some other license (not so easy) so that it can be linked with OpenSSL. This is a whole other topic that I would rather not discuss here though. The main point here is that my concept is not to limit anyone's freedom at least within the Free Software definition, but rather find some way to fund a faster Bacula development. One way is to offer tested binaries to "companies" for a modest fee. This would not stop anyone else from supplying binaries (except they could not resell our binaries without authorization). This goes hand in hand with the fact my work on creating a commercial service company next to Bacula, with three major objectives: - Ensure adequate support services to enterprises so that Bacula can penetrate the enterprise market faster. - To work hand in hand supporting existing and future independent level 2 Bacula service suppliers. - Generate revenues to fund Bacula development I have discussed this idea for something like a year now, and it has taken very clear form. I will have more to say on this subject probably over the weekend. Though it is possible, I will be a bit surprised if David has any serious objections to the direction it is taking :-) Best regards, Kern - This SF.net email is sponsored by DB2 Express Download DB2 Express C - the FREE version of DB2 express and take control of your XML. When the tape fills up it goes to a "full" state. After the retention period is up, it does say the tape is "recycled", then once the tape is written to again, it goes to "append", but the second time around, my tapes aren't holding but like 600M while before the were hold a little over 200G. I'm glad you like the idea. I am thinking about doing the same thing for all the Bacula binaries. Any company, University, or government would have to purchase the binaries (or build them for themselves). Any individual or charitable organization could download the binaries for free. Any company that had contributed to the Bacula project could download the binaries for free a number of times determined by their contribution, but at least once. [Bacula-users] Bacula BETA 2.1.26 released to Source Forge
Hello, I have just released the source code and Windows binaries of Bacula BETA 2.1.26 to the bacula-beta section of Source Forge. The main changes since the last beta release are: - Add qwt graphics library (for Qt4) needed to build bat to the depkgs-11Jul07.tar.gz package - You now need a --with-qwt= to be able to build bat. - Keep prune_volumes() from pruning the whole Scratch pool. - More debug output in status storage. - Correct moving a Scratch volume from pool to pool (some critical columns were lost). - New more efficient db_get_query_dbids() -- not yet implemented everywhere, but currently used in volume pruning. For packagers, now is the time to start preparing for release 2.2.0. Unless some major new bug crops up, this will be the last beta release prior to a full release. The following is still outstanding from the last beta release: !!! Please Note !!! Restore on Win32, and in particular on Vista is untested. Please test before relying on it. It should backup and restore reparse points. If no one wants to test the Win32 version and report back on it (particularly Vista, Vista VSS, and reparse points), I will test it myself. However, in that case, I am condering not making the binaries available on Source Forge, but on some other site and for a fee. Of course, you can build it yourself for free -- as is always the case. [Bacula-users] restoring a purged catalog
I have just found that the volume retention was set to 2 days instead of 2 weeks, and I want to restore from a volume that was backed up 4 days ago. Obviously the catalog isn't there, but if I understand correctly I should be able to use 'bscan' to re-read the volume and re-populate the catalog. I issued the command 'bscan -m -s -S /vol/backup/bacula/X0003', and it went through (took ages) and finally said: " bscan: bscan.c:349 First Volume Size = 27935562251n12-Jul 19:43 bscan: End of al l volumes. bscan: bscan.c:626 End of all Volumes. VolFiles=6 VolBlocks=0 VolBytes=27,919,97 7,429 Records added or updated in the catalog: 1 Media 1 Pool 2 Job 558666 File " But the records do not appear to be there to restore from. I increased the volume retention period to 6 months and ran bscan again, but still no records... I have since used bextract to get the data I wanted, and apart from saying "Error: Unknown stream=15 ignored" several hundred thousand times, it did successfully restore the data, and quite quickly. I would like to make the process work the way it is supposed to though. Any suggestions? Am I doing something wrong? Would it help to delete the volume completely from the catalog and then import it? [Bacula-users] 24h time format in schedule resource, 12:xx=a.m.?
I'm specifying our backup schedules in 24h format (ISO 8601). All time specifications (e.g. 8:55, 14:55, 20:55) work very well, except any time between 12:00 and 12:59. Those schedules (12.xx) are misinterpreted as "a.m.". Is this the desired behavior or a bug? It led to some mistakes here. Bacula Version is 2.0.3 (2.0.3-1mdv2008.0) Example: (excerpts) Schedule: Run = Level=Incremental Pool=Daily_rns2 Storage=File SpoolData=no mon-sat at 12:55 Scheduled Jobs: Level Type Pri Scheduled Name Volume === IncrementalBackup10 13-Jul-07 00:55rns2 Daily_rns2_0146 Thanks, Alexander - This SF.net email is sponsored by DB2 Express Download DB2 Express C - the FREE version of DB2 express and take control of your XML. Ok, now I did the following: 1.) * created /tmp/bacula-test/dir3/foo3 * didn't change the fileset * run an incr backup Terminated Jobs: JobId Level Files Bytes Status FinishedName 236 Incr 0 0 OK 12-Jul-07 11:11 x That's what I expected. 2.) * added /tmp/bacula-test/dir3/ to the fileset and reload the confg 237 Incr 0 0 OK 12-Jul-07 11:16 x The new files were not backed up! 3.) * created /tmp/bacula-test/dir5/foo5 * added /tmp/bacula-test/dir5/ to the fileset and reload the confg 238 Incr 2 0 OK 12-Jul-07 11:21 x It seems that files that were present at a previous backup are not backed up after adding the files to the fileset. Re: [Bacula-users] Any FileSet change determine a Full backup
One question, Did /tmp/bacula-test/dir2 contain files created/modified before job 234? And if so, did Bacula back them up? Imagine this scenario: 1) /tmp/bacula-test/dir2 is created and files copied into it. 2) Full Job 234 runs and does a full backup of /tmp/bacula-test/dir1 3) More files are added to /tmp/bacula-test/dir2 4) Fileset is updated to include /tmp/bacula-test/dir2 5) Incr Job 235 runs. Will job 235 only backup files created/modified since the last full backup? Or is Bacula smart enough to recognise it's never backed this directory up at all before and include all of it's contents. Based on the following snippet from the docs, I suspect the former: "We strongly recommend against setting this directive to yes, since doing so may cause you to have an incomplete set of backups." Cheers, Troy.
