Turn off software compression and see if that helps. Also maybe turn
on attribute spooling.

[Bacula-users] Bacula performance

2010-08-04 Thread rvent
Hello,

I am new to Bacula and so far i really like it.

I am testing Bacula and at the moment i am trying to backup to disk. Everything
seems to be working fine except that the file transfers from the client to the
server are not very fast.

The server's interface is a 2Gbps card, the client's is 10/100mbps, the ports
on the switch where they both connect is 10/100 so i know i am not going to get
anything faster than 100mbps. However, i am not getting anywhere near that.

I found out i was using the default "Maximum Network Buffer Size" so i changed
that to 100mbps or 13107200 bytes, however, when the backup runs it only gets
to 1489510.4 bytes per second. If i copy the same amount of data between the
same server using "scp" i get 11MB/s.

Is there anything i can check...?

Thanks, bellow are the relevant config files.

[Bacula-users] Strategy question

2010-08-04 Thread rvent
Hello,

Is is possible to have all the clients save their backups to their local drive
(full, incremental, differential) and then back up those client backups to the
server?

Can i do this from one remote director? Or will every client have to be the
director, storage and client?

I think that this way if something happens to the network/server/storage/tapes
at least the backups still happening.

THanks

*Nonsense!!!*

"Label barcodes" is perfectly safe, if any tapes in the autochanger are
currently labelled they are ignored.

To the OP - Have you put the barcode stickers (from HP) *on the tape
cartridges the correct way up?*

On some systems, (BSD?) slot numbers are expected to begin at zero.
Bacula (and Linux) expect slot numbers to begin at one. When Bacula
sends a command to the autochanger to load slot 1, it is expecting the
first slot to be loaded. But on systems that number from zero, when you
use mtx to load slot 1 it will actually load the second slot. This can
be worked around by changing your autochanger script to subtract 1 from
the slot number on a load command and add 1 to slot numbers for the
loaded and list commands.

I am running linux, but this sounds like it would fix the problem. It
isn't clear to me what to change. Here is the relevant bit from my
script (3 is the input argument for slots). I don't think I can just
change the setup argument to slot=$3+1, but not entirely sure why not:

# Setup arguments

Both mtx-changer and mtx-changer.conf should be in

[Bacula-users] issue with "delete pool"

2010-08-04 Thread Gunnar Thielebein
When deleting a pool via bconsole, the volumes of that pool still exists
in filesystem but are not known anymore to the director and needs to be
deleted manually. When I use the label command:

Connecting to Storage daemon daily_storage at 192.168.2.211:9103 ...
Sending label command for Volume "" Slot 0 ...
3920 Cannot label Volume because it is already labeled: ""
Label command failed for Volume .

I wonder if this is by design?
Also all jobs written to volumes of that pool still exists in database
and are shown on "list jobs". You need to go and delete all jobs of that
volume by hand. This can be much fun.

Re: [Bacula-users] Upgrading Bacula

2010-08-04 Thread Brian White

Thanks to all for your responses.  I found the database table upgrade
scripts in the source tree under updatedb.  There I found the
update_mysql_tables_10_to_11 which then allowed me to run the
update_mysql_tables under the install directory.  All of the daemons
are up and running.  My client machines are still running 2.2.5 which I
will be upgrading soon but the server seems to be communicating fine
with them.  I tested the connections using the "status" command in
bconsole.

Thanks again for all of the help!

Where would that be? I don't see it in /etc/bacula/, and I don't see a
reference to it in /etc/bacula/scripts/mtx-changer.

Through some trickery (loaded the tape into the drive from outside
bacula, and then mounted in bacula), I was able to get it to use the
tape in slot 3 for that backup, but I did not get so lucky with the next
backup. Initially it could not eject the previous tape because of the
confusion of slots. Then, once I manually loaded the correct tape
outside of bacula and mounted, it did not recognize that it had the
correct tape and attempted to eject it:

Having properly labeled barcode volumes will fix issues with your
autochanger knowing what volumes exist in the changer without having
to load every tape to figure that out. It will not fix any other
problem.

Notice all volumes are appendable and Volume 1 is full. Is there a reason why
the tape does not pick up say Volume 2 automatically when Volume 1 is full.

p.s. I manually recycled Volume 8 when it filled up as I could not backup
anything else on to other tapes.

Do you guys suggest I:
1- Blank both tapes
2- Delete the labels and re-create the labels

Will this help the tapedrive to auto-select the next volume when one gets
filled up?

Thanks for your help

Your database has a Version table containing the current DB schema
version. You need to find what version your current DB is, then obtain
and run, in order, all of the single-version upgrade scripts necessary
to bring it up to the current Version 12.

Your database has a Version table containing the current DB schema
version. You need to find what version your current DB is, then obtain
and run, in order, all of the single-version upgrade scripts necessary
to bring it up to the current Version 12.

You need to to use the previous scripts first. I am not sure which you
need to begin with.

[Bacula-users] Upgrading Bacula

2010-08-04 Thread Brian White
I've been using Bacula 2.2.5 as my primary backup software for several
years now and am very happy. As we move to newer version of our linux
operating system I'm having issues with the client so I've decided it's
about time to upgrade. My plan is to upgrade to the latest stable
version 5.0.2. I'm concerned about upgrading the database tables. I'm
using MySql. I know there is a script to upgrade the tables in my
database but the comments in the script talk about upgrading from 3.0 to
5.0. Can I just run this script or should I download a previous version
of bacula, say 3.0.x, and run that database table upgrade script first?

Thanks for the help.

Yes, but even with what was left in the spool directories the disk was
nowhere near full, nor were the directories anywhere near the 100Gb mark.

I've had it decide to start despooling at 60kB at times. Usually it's
more like 5Mb to 8Gb.

Hi drescherjm

Thanks for the advice. I manually labelled the tapes after having exhausted all
options (at least the options I could think of), the barcode labelling didn't
work either after several attempts so safe to assume the tapes do not have any
codes?

What is the best course of action now, I would really like the tape rotations
going on a daily basis. How does my config look, is there something I need to
add to it (I am sure there would be some, wish I could figure out what).

Thanks & Regards

It is not correct to manually label tapes in an autochanger if you
have one that has a barcode reader. With a barcode reader you issue
label barcodes from the console after you issue update slots. For the
label barcodes I put all new volumes in the Scratch pool.

[Bacula-users] Bacula Autochanger Questions

2010-08-04 Thread sid009
Hi rory

Thanks for your prompt response. I looked at the link you just provided when I
was setting up Bacula. Just a bit more information, when I was labelling the
volumes, Bacula was not auto-labelling any of the tapes so I had to simulate
the barcodes by following the steps in "Simulating Barcodes in your
Autochanger" in the link you provided. My volumes are listed as Volume1,
Volume2, Volume3 ... Volume8 now. Please forgive my ignorance on the subject,
because I could write to a specific volume I assume labelling this way is
correct?

I am not really getting any changer command errors I suspect I have missed

You probably need to edit mtx-changer to get it to do the right thing.
Did you specify that you have a vxa changer in your mtx-changer.conf?

Did you change the pool definition after you added the volumes? Did
you change bacula-dir.conf without issuing the reload command in a
bacula console?

Have you looked through the resource here?:

If so is the changer command failing?

[Bacula-users] Bacula Autochanger Questions

2010-08-04 Thread sid009
Hi Guys,

I am new to Bacula and an average Linux user. I am trying to setup Bacula to
work with our HP LTO4 Autochanger (7 slots + 1 mail slot). I have managed to
label all the tapes and I can see all the volumes listed via bconsole. The
problem I am having is Auto-rotating the tapes. Right now when a tape gets
filled all the jobs either go into a pending state or fail.

Ideally I would want a tape to be used per day (so 5 tapes for Monday - Friday)
using incremental backups and a full backup on Saturday. After every successful
back up I want the tape to be ejected to the mail slot to be take off site.

Does anyone have any example configurations that I could use. Do I need to
provide my bacula-dir.conf here? I have been struggling to make this work for
weeks any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Fair enough. Can restores run off marked columns in database tables?
This exercise could be taken out of the main core of Bacula into a
little Django app (perhaps) and not affect the main body of Bacula at
all except for some way of executing restores.

Are these mountpoints? If so, you can safely ignore the warnings because the
directories are listed in the FileSet.

I suggest reporting the warnings as a bug (see
http://www.bacula.org/en/?page=bugs).

I think stored procedures would be a good idea. That way, we could
improve the functionality without changing the application.

That said, we do not at present use stored procedures. We'd have to
proceed carefully.

Yes, I'm trying! I'm trying to do it properly by recompiling debian
stable backports and I'm running into library dependancy problems.

I'll look at some of the post batch insert queries and look to optimise
them somewhat with our database development team in the next month.

Would it be helpful if we developed some proof-of-concept plpgsql
functions for searching catalogues? We could also do a bit of work on
UTF8 conversion/support.

Re: [Bacula-users] Problem with Volumes

2010-08-04 Thread Carlo Filippetto
The problem is that!

I have head made 5 volumes, I don't let Bacula to create them, I wold like
that every single volume contains only a 'daily' backup... In this
installation I have only 12 client, and I want that all the backup of this
night will go into that single volumes...

The retention period is for recicle the volumes, I create 5 volumes to cover
from monday to wednesday, in the week-and will run the weekly jobs. The
retention is to let the volume recicle the next week

I tried to use
 Volume Use Duration = 23h
but it don't work as I would like...

In this page
http://www.bacula.org/fr/dev-manual/Basic_Volume_Management.html#DiskChapter
I can read this:
-

Pool {
  Name = File
  Pool Type = Backup
  Volume Use Duration = 23h
}

then if you run a backup once a day (every 24 hours), Bacula will use a new
Volume for each backup, because each Volume it writes can only be used for
23 hours after the first write
-

Wh it don't work for me?

Thak's
