[Bacula-users] decompression when migrating from disk to tape?

2011-05-02 Thread Uwe Mohn
Hello all,

is it possible to decompress the files on a job when it is migrated to tape?
The backround is: we want to keep the last set of full, differential and
incremental backups on tape for fast restore. As soon as a new full
backup is done, we want to migrate the last full to tape (differentials
and incrementals will be recycled without migration).
To save disk space we would like to compress the disk backups. But (as
also mentioned in the documentation) it would be counterproductively to
write compressed data to tapes with hardware compression.
Following the documentation the software compression is done by
file-deamon. When now a job is migratet to a device wich has set
AllowCompression=no due to hardware compression will the data be
decompressed before transferred to tape?
Is ist possible to achive this behavior?

Thanks a lot.

Bacula does not really know what volume it will use till it actually
starts the backup so the display will not take into account Use
volume once or any other condition that limits the volume usage.

[Bacula-users] Central control remote storage

2011-05-02 Thread Stephens, Bill {PBSG}
I have remote servers set up in a single server configuration, meaning each
server runs the director, sd, and fd. The remote servers have their own
removable drives to store the backups. The servers only have slow connections
to our central sites. Is it possible to configure a central director, and
still have the clients do their backups to storage that's local to them? My
goal is to manage many remote clients from a central point.

[Bacula-users] help Level = VolumeToCatalog

Hi bacula-users
I would to know if the include clause verify = isd5 is correct if applied on
a verify job with Level = VolumeToCatalog.
As is wrote in documentation it seems that only for Level=Catalog or

So, what file's attribute are verified in Level = VolumeToCatalog, just
MD5/SHA1 signatures?

Bacula does not have a central director concept. You can have storage
located on any machines in the network that can run the storage
daemon. Meaning a storage device does not need to be on a director
machine. Neither does the database. However the problem you will have
is the database records need to be transferred to the director and
from the director to the database server.

It's definitely possible, I've configured something like it for a client
where both servers have their own tapedrive but only one runs a director.

All you need to do is to have one server with bacula-dir (the central
management server), and all other servers with bacula-sd and bacula-fd.
Then just define all the different Storage devices in your bacula-dir
and make sure each client uses the right one.

If setup correctly you'll only have metadata flowing towards the
director, and all data itself will stay local between the sd and fd on
the other servers.

Kind regards,
Jeremy

Great, metadata flowing isn't a problem, backing up a machine over our WAN

[Bacula-users] Tar and Bacula doesn't work together.

2011-05-02 Thread obviously
Hi all

My first post here. So don't shoot me if I say/do stupid things.

I got a problem with Bacula. The version I use is 2.4.4 on debian etch.

My Bacula runs smootly, everything seems to work.

But now, when I try to execute a tar command I get some errors.

The error:

user:/etc/init.d# tar -tvf /dev/nst0
tar: /dev/nst0: Cannot open: Device or resource busy
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

I discovered that the storage-daemon blocks the tape drive. So when I stop the
daemon, i get:

user:/etc/init.d# tar -tvf /dev/nst0
tar: /dev/nst0: Cannot read: Cannot allocate memory
tar: At beginning of tape, quitting now
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

How can I solve this and is there a tool to see the tapes content when the
daemon is running without using bconsole?

If you need meer info or configs: ask! :)

If you issue the unmount command in bacula it will release the tape
drive from bacula's control. Then you can use external tools. Remember
after you are done with external tools to mount the tape in bacula
using the mount command otherwise bacula will prompt you on the next
backup for user intervention.

Bacula does not write tapes in tar format. You can use bls and bscan
to look at bacula tapes.

Since 2.4.4 is now nearly 4 years old, you really ought to try a more
recent version.

Bacula tapes are not in a format that tar understands--the only
meaningful way to find out what is on the tapes is either with bconsole,
bscan, bls, or some SQL commands against the database backend that you
are using. Of these, by far the easiest is bconsole. Reading the tapes
to see what is on them (i.e. using bscan or bls) is hugely slow compared
to using the database to get that information. If your database is
missing what you need (either due to misconfig or disaster recovery),
then bscan can help you.

Hope this helps,

From what I can see, the media.locationid field and the location table are not

Anyone concur?

I'm about to move some tapes offsite, and I'd like to record their location
