The whole server has 8GB, but that only needed for Bacula director in
case of restoring some million files ;-)

I saw this kind of errors when SD write something to the volume, but has
problem in updating the catalog. In this case number of files on volume was

I recommend to purge the volume and start writing from beginning. You can
update a number of files in catalog for this volume, but I cannot guarantee

It is possible. Check what is written to the volume with bls utility.

Hi Andreas,

we are using also LTO-5 with 2M Blocksize and without any Problems.

Drives and Kernel are:

Linux 3.2.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.2.46-1+deb7u1 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Medium ChangerOVERLAND NEO Series
IBM  ULTRIUM-TD5
IBM  ULTRIUM-TD5

the btape tests fails like in your example, but backup and restore are working
fine.

I migrated all of our bacula catalogs from mysql to mariadb 5.x over
the course of the last year and have been a happy camper ever
since. Our largest catalog instance has nearly 400 million rows in the
file table on a DL380 server with 18GB RAM, and performance seems o.k.

I'd recommend compiling from source. It's not that hard and it's quite
easy to keep different bacula versions (with the same catalog version)
alongside each other in case things break.

You can then copy over the old config and use bacula-dir -t to check
for any syntatic problems with the latest version of bacula.

something like

configure --prefix=/server/bacula-5.2.13

after extracting the tarball and cd'ing to the src dir should get you
going.

You will most likely have to run several "upgrade bacula tables"
scripts on the old catalog which could take a while depending on your
database size.

Nice work, thanks for sharing!

Maybe a word or two on preventing this situation in the first place
might be helpful, like restricting volume sizes & number?

Also, you could consider documenting deleting a volume from a disk
pool (update pool from resource and so on) once the reader has cleaned
up the current mess ;-)

I come to know that, there was no more space for mysql database. So Catalog was
not able to grow . ☺

I am facing one more Issue.

I have three volumes in my data pool which I have created with “volume
retention= 3 months” parameter . In have below questions.

1. On volume one bacula has written only 680 GB of data while Tapes
capacity is 800 GB and its moved on to append to next Volume. Why it is
happening?
Question: 800GB with or without compression?

2. It is writing on volume two and three months are completed still it is
showing volume one status as “Append” It should be Purged I think or Full ?
Retention time starts as soon as volume status become Full or Used. If you fill
your volume very slow then setup Volume Use Duration parameter. In this case
after "Volume Use Duration" time volume will be automatically updated to Used
status and retention time starts.

Many thanks for the data point! When we use Bacula (not just btape) with
larger block sizes (512 KB), our backups abort when bacula fails to read the
tape's header block.

I notice you have IBM drives. Maybe the block size limitation (for some

Hi Uwe and John,

Thanks for the suggestions. I"ve added most of them except for the second from
from Uwe about dleting a volume.

I already have details for deleting a volume, but I think I'm mis understanding
what you mean by updating the pool afterwards.

Or do you mean that if you RM a volume before calling delete that you have to
then do an update pool?

No. I initially tried writing with 512 KB to our existing tapes for
differentials (that were written on LTO-4 drives onto the same tapes, also
with 512 KB).

> That will not work. If you change block sizes all existing tapes holding

That was my second attempt: Freshly labelled tapes. All tries with 512KB
failed as described previously, only 128 KB succeeded.

As with btape, the problem with the larger block sizes did not come up
during writing, but during reading. This lead to all backups failing, since
Bacula appears to read the on-tape header block before writing the actual
backup.

Hmm, curiouser and curiouser! I'll wait and see whether btape gets fixed to
accept the larger block sizes and then proceed to run more tests.

Many thanks for all the feedback!

That will not work. If you change block sizes all existing tapes holding
data must be marked "used" and new ones labelled.

I run 2Mb block size quite happily on HP LTO5 drives and have done for a
few years. They are capable of 16Mb - we are limited to 2Mb by Bacula.

Did you attempt to mix blocksizes on the same physical tape?

That will not work. If you change block sizes all existing tapes holding data
must be marked "used" and new ones labelled.

I run 2Mb block size quite happily on HP LTO5 drives and have done for a few
years. They are capable of 16Mb - we are limited to 2Mb by Bacula.

Everything is FC connected using QLA 2430-series controllers.

When linux first connects to the drives it reports the largest block
size supported by the devices in dmesg and on the console.

This information is also obtainable using tapeinfo:

# tapeinfo -f /etc/bacula/DEVICES/CHANGER2-DRIVE6-sg
Product Type: Tape Drive
Vendor ID: 'HP  '
Product ID: 'Ultrium 5-SCSI  '
Revision: 'I57H'
Attached Changer: No
SerialNumber: 'HUE23108AJ'
MinBlock:1
MaxBlock:16777215

SCSI ID: 1
SCSI LUN: 0
Ready: yes
BufferedMode: yes
Medium Type: Not Loaded
Density Code: 0x58
BlockSize: 0
DataCompEnabled: yes
DataCompCapable: yes
DataDeCompEnabled: yes
CompType: 0x1
DeCompType: 0x1
Block Position: 971091

/etc/bacula/DEVICES/CHANGER2-DRIVE6-sg is just a symlink through to
/dev/tape/by-id which makes it easier to debug errors.

We also have some older LTO2 drives which report 16Mb support.

[Bacula-users] Fatal error: Authorization key rejected by Storage daemon.

2013-09-20 Thread Kevin B. Zimmerman
Greetings -

I'm running Bacula 5.2.5 on an Ubuntu 12.04.3 server, with about 61TB of
disk storage and an attached Dell PVTL2000 tape library. Backups are
working great, but restores are presenting a problem.

Here's my dilemma:

When attempting to restore a file, I get this status for about 10 minutes:

  JobId Level   Name   Status

  19085 Restore-public-Disk.2013-09-20_12.43.48_32 is waiting

So I went to check out
http://www.bacula.org/rel-manual/faq.html#AuthorizationErrors as
suggested by the error, but it doesn't exist. I looked at
http://www.bacula.org/5.2.x-manuals/en/problems/problems/Bacula_Frequently_Asked_Que.html#SECTION0026

presuming it to be the same, but it didn't help.

I'm not sure why it fails on auth. It uses the same password to run
backups, and those work fine.
I tested connectivity between the two systems, and both are able to talk
to each other (port 9102 on client, ports 9102 & 9103 on each of the
server's many IPs).
Max Concurrent Jobs are set to 7 in all configs, and no other jobs are
running.

One thing I noticed was that after selecting the file(s) to restore, I
get this:

The job will require the following
Volume(s) Storage(s)SD Device(s)
===

 DiskPool0197  File_20   DiskStorage

This particular client uses File_5, which may be part of the problem,
though I don't understand why. That volume (DiskPool0197) has backups
from many different clients, from many different VLANs.

Some relevant info:

In trying to reduce network overhead, the backup server has been added
to each of the VLANs where the Bacula clients reside, resulting in
numerous file and tape storage definitions. Here's a subset of the file
definitions:

Storage {
   Name = File_5
   Address = 192.168.115.35
   SDPort = 9103
   Password = ""
   Device = DiskStorage
   Media Type = File
   Maximum Concurrent Jobs = 7
}

Storage {
   Name = File_20
   Address = 192.168.120.35  # N.B. Use a fully qualified name here
   SDPort = 9103
   Password = ""
   Device = DiskStorage
   Media Type = File
   Maximum Concurrent Jobs = 7
}

The problem has not been limited to a specific VLAN.
I've tried changing all of the Storage definitions to use the same IP
wondering if Bacula was confused about which IP to send traffic out, to
no avail.
I've tried turning on debugging, but got no output.

No idea what I'm missing here. What other info did I fail to provide?
Any thoughts on what's going on?

Thanks,

Re: [Bacula-users] Fatal error: Authorization key rejected by Storage daemon.

2013-09-20 Thread Ana Emília M . Arruda
Hi Kevin,

Just trying to understand... The error bellow:

Restore-public-Disk.2013-09-20_12.43.48_32 is waiting
for Client to connect to Storage daemon
...
20-Sep 12:19 public-fd JobId 19084: Fatal error: Authorization key rejected
by Storage daemon.
Please seehttp://www.bacula.org/rel-manual/faq.html#AuthorizationErrors  for
help.
20-Sep 12:19 public-fd JobId 19084: Fatal error: Failed to authenticate
Storage daemon.

It means that your client "public-fd" have problems to connect to storage
daemon. In the case, for the restore job, bacula is asking for:

Storage {
   Name = File_20
   Address = 192.168.120.35
...
}

So, probably, public-fd has network problems in communicating with
192.168.120.35...

Are you using the correct JobId for the restore? When you say that it
should ask for File_5 storage, maybe you are misunderstanding the JobId
information for the restore you want.

Best regards,
Ana

I did solve the compile issue. With a lot more Googling (I really wish I
were better at searching for things), I did find the -dev packages. For
some unknown reason, they are not in the repository, I had to download
them manually and install them. When I did that and re-ran configure and
make, it does compile.

Now on to see if I can get it to work.

On Tue, 2013-09-17 at 13:13 +0300, Guy wrote:

Yes I do this with vchanger...

I've run into a wall trying to get vchanger to compile on Raspbian (a
limited version of Debian for the Raspberry Pi).

When I run configure, it notes that I do not have libuuid. I believe
this is correct; there is a shared library (.so) version, but there is
no development (.a) version. However, it still tries to use -luuid
anyway, and I get linker errors:

libtool: link: g++ -g -O2 -o vchanger vchanger-vchanger_common.o
vchanger-compat_util.o vchanger-junctions.o vchanger-uuidlookup.o
vchanger-util.o vchanger-vconf.o vchanger-loghandler.o
vchanger-diskchanger.o vchanger-changerstate.o vchanger-vchanger.o
-L/lib/arm-linux-gnueabihf -luuid -lblkid
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -luuid
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lblkid
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [vchanger] Error 1

I tried manually editing the Makefile in the src directory to comment
out this line:

#vchanger_LDADD = -L/usr/local/lib -luuid -lblkid

I didn't really expect that to work, since manually editing Makefiles
produced by configure seldom does, and it didn't:

vchanger-uuidlookup.o: In function `GetMountpointFromUUID':
/usr/local/src/vchanger/src/uuidlookup.c:236: undefined reference to
`blkid_get_devname'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

Is there any hope of getting vchanger to compile? A set of configure
options that will prevent the linker errors, perhaps?

Yes. The quick and dirty way is to comment out the vchanger_LDADD line
in the Makefile.am in the src directory and replace the uuidlookup.c
file with a version having a single function as follows:

/* * uuidlookup.c ( to disable UUID lookups ) */ #include "config.h"
#include  int GetMountpointFromUUID(char *mountp, size_t
mountp_sz, const char *uuid_str)

{ /* Always fail as if for a system error */
return -1;
}

This uuidlookup.c will not call any libuuid or libblkid functions, and
so prevent the attempt to link with those libraries. Of course, you must
specify magazines by their mountpoint directories and never by UUID.

The other approach is to snag the libuuid and libblkid headers from the
Rasbian source and manually put them in /usr/include before running
configure. If the libraries are installed and haven't been patched too
heavily from their Debian versions, then that may well work. I know
nothing about Rasbian, so can't really say.

Thanks,

I'm not an expert, but my guess would be that no, this won't affect which
drive will be used for backup--except to the extent that the tape in
question is left in that drive until the backup runs--my understanding is
that a mounted (& suitable) tape, in whichever drive, is preferred when
running a backup.

I assume that your library has more than one drive (or it wouldn't
prompt)--in general, you can receive more helpful responses if you let us
see at least part of your config (in this case especially the sd config).
 You can always anonymize the passwords & such.

[Bacula-users] volume Labeling with Autochanger

2013-09-20 Thread Deepak
Dear Team,

While labeling a new volume My system is asking me to enter auto
changer drive.

See Below command output:

*label barcodes slot=1 pool=pool1
Automatically selected Catalog: catalog1
Using Catalog "catalog1"
The defined Storage resources are:
  1: File
  2: Autochanger
Select Storage resource (1-2): 2
Enter autochanger drive[0]:

Please tell me, Is this "Enter autochanger drive[0]:" option in anyhow
is related to backup/restore job(will this selection plays any role in
selecting drive used while job execution?).

Thanks in advance...!

Re: [Bacula-users] USB tape drives?

2013-09-20 Thread Greg Woods

I've run into a wall trying to get vchanger to compile on Raspbian (a
limited version of Debian for the Raspberry Pi).

When I run configure, it notes that I do not have libuuid. I believe
this is correct; there is a shared library (.so) version, but there is
no development (.a) version. However, it still tries to use -luuid
anyway, and I get linker errors:

libtool: link: g++ -g -O2 -o vchanger vchanger-vchanger_common.o
vchanger-compat_util.o vchanger-junctions.o vchanger-uuidlookup.o
vchanger-util.o vchanger-vconf.o vchanger-loghandler.o
vchanger-diskchanger.o vchanger-changerstate.o vchanger-vchanger.o
-L/lib/arm-linux-gnueabihf -luuid -lblkid
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -luuid
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lblkid
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [vchanger] Error 1

I tried manually editing the Makefile in the src directory to comment
out this line:

#vchanger_LDADD = -L/usr/local/lib -luuid -lblkid

I didn't really expect that to work, since manually editing Makefiles
produced by configure seldom does, and it didn't:

vchanger-uuidlookup.o: In function `GetMountpointFromUUID':
/usr/local/src/vchanger/src/uuidlookup.c:236: undefined reference to
`blkid_get_devname'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

Is there any hope of getting vchanger to compile? A set of configure
options that will prevent the linker errors, perhaps?

Thanks,
--Greg

P.S. It doesn't appear that -dev packages are available for these
libraries:

Thanks for the reply Uwe, when you mention "upgrade bacula tables"
scripts, are these scripts that can be found within the compiled bacula
software itself?

Thanks

[Bacula-users] vchanger

2013-09-20 Thread Greg Woods
I'm having some trouble getting vchanger to work, partly because the
documentation that comes with it seems not to be up to date. For
instance, the keywords described in the howto HTML file that comes with
the source are invalid keywords. The example config file has the right
keywords, but I'm having difficulty getting vchanger to work.

When I get to testing vchanger, the list command works; it shows there
are 34 slots. But "label barcodes" appears not to work correctly:

*label barcodes
Automatically selected Catalog: GregAndEva
Using Catalog "GregAndEva"
The defined Storage resources are:
 1: BKUP
 2: ARCH
Select Storage resource (1-2): 2
Enter autochanger drive[0]:
Connecting to Storage daemon ARCH at bstore.gregandeva.net:9103 ...
3306 Issuing autochanger "slots" command.
Device "ARCH" has 34 slots.
Connecting to Storage daemon ARCH at bstore.gregandeva.net:9103 ...
3306 Issuing autochanger "list" command.
No Volumes found to label, or no barcodes.
*

The inserted magazine disk does automount correctly, but there isn't
anything there except the lost+found directory. Nothing in the
documentation tells me how the index file is created or the
one-file-per-slot files or what name those files should have or if I am
supposed to create them myself or if vchanger is supposed to create them
and if so, how.

Is there any up-to-date documentation that explains how to set up and
configure vchanger? Is there something obvious that I have done wrong? I
can post the relevant parts of the config files if necessary.

Thanks,
--Greg
