[Bacula-users] Volume Retention

2011-12-06 Thread Craig Van Tassle
I was trying to get a bit of a better grasp of Volume Retention and
recycling.

For Tapes I understand that after the Job, File and Retention Period
the Tape Volume is Marked as Recycled and can be reused again.

For Filed. What happenes after Job, File and Retention period expire?
Does the file get Deleted or Truncated if the Purge Action is set to
Truncate?

Also how can I figure out exactly how long a Volume will be saved.

For example I want to save my Tape Volumes for a year, My
Differentials for 6 months and my Incremental backups for 3 months.
I've tried setting the Retention time on those Pools for the correct
time but they don't seem to get truncated or deleted after the
retention period.

Thanks.

It seems like it would be better to not have a Recycle flag set for my

I have them in different pools. One Full (that is tapes), One that is
for my Differentials and my Incrimentals and one for my catalog.

[Bacula-users] Restore not using correct Files.

2012-01-04 Thread Craig Van Tassle
I'm trying to do a restore of some files I backup. It reads my
Differential, and Tape pools with out issue. When it gets to the
Incremental File I get this.

04-Jan 10:34 bacula-sd JobId 8408: Please mount Volume
"Incr0169" for: Job:  RestoreFiles.2012-01-04_10.25.06_17
Storage:  "Differential" (/backup/differential)
Pool: Disk_Full
Media type:   File

The file labeled Incr0169, lives in /backup/Incremental. If I copy or
symlink the file's around the backup works. I'm not sure what is going
on, but how can I fix it so I dont have to symlink or move files around
when I'm doing a restore.

Thanks

That would be an issue. But the job also switched from my Tape library

At least for tape to File moves. Also my Tape Library is on a different
system from my differential/incremental pools. That could be why it
worked.

[Bacula-users] Encrypting Data on Tape

2012-01-10 Thread Craig Van Tassle
I'm sorry if this has been asked before.

I'm running a Scalar 50 with HP LTO-4 Drives. I want to encrypt the
data that is put on the tape, We already have encryption going between
the Dir/SD and FD's. I just want to encrypt the data that will be
placed on Tape for OffSite storage.

Has anyone done that or know some pointers to point me to so I can get
this working?

Thanks!

That makes sense. I will have to try that out. If I change the type
Will that affect my current backups or will they be updated

I do the separate pool for offsite backups as well. The only thing I'm
trying to work on is encrypting my offsite's as well. I'm trying to
setup things that I can just copy from my Full tape pool to the
encrypted tape pool. I'm going to use the bacula build in encryption
because the SD is not able to work with the encryption that is
available with LTO-4 tape drives.

Is it possible to use FD encryption with copy jobs?

Thanks

I had this issue in the past as well. The solution was to change what
type of media. Here is an example out of my SD configuration file.

  Device = Differential
  Media Type = File-Diff

I had to update my pools to reflect the new media type and backups and
restores work with out having to use the symlinks.

[Bacula-users] Suppressing Duplicate Job errors

2012-05-07 Thread Craig Van Tassle
Most of my full backups take a day or two for my larger Fileservers.
During that time the Incremental backups fail because I have a setting
to not allow duplicate jobs.

Is there a way I can suppresses just the error messages because of
duplicate jobs? I'm running bacula 5.0.2 on Debain squeeze.

Thanks

[Bacula-users] Virtual Full for to different SD

2012-09-12 Thread Craig Van Tassle
Does a VirtualFull job have to be run on the same SD as where the Full
is?

I'm trying to save space in my offsite SD. I though that doing
VirtualFull's to the offsite might be the way to go. Has anyone done
this or does anyone have a better recommendation how to do this?

I cant just ship the tapes offsite. My Tape Library does not have
encryption abilities and that's a requirement for offsite access.

Sharing an autoloader across multiple SD is not going to help me.
I didn't think the VirtualFull would save me any space.

Using the encryption built in to bacula will take far to long for the
number and size of my backups. Also the management overhead of the
encryption is so much for my limited time.

The basic thing is I'm looking at using an offsite SD for DR backups.

You confirmed what I thought. Thanks.

That is what I use. It restores everything from though the latest backup with
out me telling it what to do. Fair warning. Running several of these at a time
in parallel has caused my DIR to lockup several times with not warning.

[Bacula-users] Autochanger is not a Device in the SD

2011-05-17 Thread Craig Van Tassle
I have Scalar50 that I'm trying to setup with Bacula. I have the
mtx script working, I can inventory and verify all my Tape and labels.

But when I try to run a job I get this..

 Storage daemon didn't accept Device "Scalar50" because:

This is what I have in my bacula-sd.conf file

Autochanger {

Device = LTO4-1
Changer Device = /dev/sg0
Changer Command = "/etc/bacula/scripts/mtx-changer %c %o %S

   Media Type = LTO4
   Archive Device = /dev/nst0
   AutomaticMount = yes;
   AlwaysOpen = yes;
   RemovableMedia = yes;
   RandomAccess = no;
   Autochanger = yes
   Drive Index = 0

}

Device {

   AlwaysOpen = yes;
   RemovableMedia = yes;
   RandomAccess = no;
   Autochanger = yes
   Drive Index = 1
   Spool Directory = /var/spool/bacula

According to the documentaion I believe I should be using the
autochanger's name as the backup device.

Do I have that wrong?

Thanks

[Bacula-users] Waiting on Maximum Storage Jobs

I've got several jobs that are running at the same time and they are
spooling data to the local disk, then writing to my Tape Drive for full

I can only run one Full job at a time. The rest of the jobs are all in

I'm not sure where to look to set fix this. My Google-fu has failed me

As crazy as this sounds have you though of setting up something like an

[Bacula-users] Network speed between FD and SD

2011-06-24 Thread Craig Van Tassle
I'm trying to increase the network speed between my FD and my SD.

My Cacti graphs are showing that my network usage averages 60Mb/s and
the connections between all the clients are on 1Gb links. I would think
I would be able to pull more speed to my SD then just 60Mb/s.

Is there anything I can do to try to speed up the network transfer
between the FD and SD. I would like to be able to get to near Gigabit
speeds to my SD. I'm also running a couple of jobs at once, I would
have though that would have helped me spool the data faster.

Also I'm running on a Dell sc1425 for my SD and my Clients are Dell
r610's.

Thanks

[Bacula-users] Director and resource

2011-11-07 Thread Craig Van Tassle
I have a Bacula Director and the Spool for my tape library on an older
Dell SC1425 with 8GB of ram. When I'm doing my normal differentials and
incremental I dont have any issues, however when I'm doing my monthly
full backups I get the attached in my dmesg output. It appears to be for
some reason the server's running out of memory. Is there any way I can limit or
remove those messages.
There is nothing else on the server, just a bacula-fd, bacula-dir and a SD that
is running my tape library.

Thanks.
