Currently, migration and copy only works within the same storage daemon.
So if you have a single storage host with multiple storage devices it
works. I use it by backing up to disk overnight. Then in the morning,
running copy jobs from disk to tape. It works like a charm. It's great
for running to a guaranteed working device then later put it to a tape

Migration is only implemented for a single Storage daemon. You cannot
read on one Storage daemon and write on another.

   I know the volume contains good backups and is marked as Full.

 If I estimate the job, it seems to report a full backup would be

 this particular volume:

 However, I want to see the whole volume migrated or copied. I am
 also unsure if the above configuration is correct. The storage I want
 to copy from is called simply File and the storage I want to copy to
 is called File2. I do have both of these defined in the
 configuration. I am being asked to keep volumes from this and other
 backup sets indefinitely. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank

Re: [Bacula-users] number of files mismatch

2009-07-06 Thread Dirk Bartley
 But unfortunatelly I started to fix it my way ;)
 The idea of my way was to make bacula believe that there is no more
 then 152 files on tape. What I did was:

 mt asf 153
 mt weof

 I believed that EOF at position of file 153 will result in only 152
 files on the tape. Now I know I was wrong. :)
 So there is my first question:

I was in a similar situation. I think there was something relating to writing
multiple jobs without spooling, but I'm not sure. As soon as I configured the
storage device for one job at a time, no further problems. The immediate
solution was to sql update the database with the number that it wanted.

Dirk

 Where can I find any document clearly describing the method of writing
 data to tape device? This question is even not much related to bacula
 itself - I just would like to have some background on low level tape
 operating.

Greetings

Julian is correct with exceptions.

  Recycle Oldest Volume = yes
  Recycle Current Volume = yes
  PurgeOldestVolume = yes

Warning, the following description may not be perfect:

I use recycle oldest and purge oldest. This way, the job records can be
maintained in the catalog with an unresonably long job retention period.
When the director completes jobs, it will still perform pruning
operations pruning file records.

Then when the director goes to schedule a job, it will purge job records
from the volume and label it recycled if all jobs have had their file
records pruned. The volume chosen to recyle will be the one that has
not been written to for the longest period.

The status dir will show the recycled volume as the volume scheduled to
use.

For instance, I have a pool with two tapes for Tuesday and Thursday. I
want to use it four times then have it schedule using the othe tape
rotating every two weeks.

Pool {
  Name = LTO_TueThu
  Pool Type = Backup
  Recycle = yes
  AutoPrune = yes
  Volume Retention = 16 Days
  Volume Use Duration = 10 Days
  Recycle Oldest Volume = yes
  PurgeOldestVolume = yes
  Storage = LTO
}

Set it up recently and it seems to work so far. Best of luck. The
documentation is awesome because there are so many possible parameters.
The one thing that may be missing is more recipes from current users.

 Hi,

 I'm confused in regards to job retention vs volume retention. From the
 little bit I understand, if the volume retention period is passed and bacula
 is unable to find any other appendable volumes in the client's stoarge pool,
 it will delete all file and job records and then re-use that volume.
 However, how about if all the jobs in that volume have been pruned but the
 volume retention period hasn't passed yet (and of course recycling is
 enabled) Will bacula still re-use the volume since no more jobs remained
 after they've all been pruned? If it does, what's the purpose of having a
 volume retention period which is usually without a doubt longer than the job
 retention period? If it doesn't, what's the point of keeping a volume which
 doesn't contain jobIDs which can't be restored anymore?

 thanks in advance,

Re: [Bacula-users] Job vs volume retention periods

2009-06-24 Thread Dirk Bartley

 Thanks for the help provided so far, it's very much appreciated. I do have
 a few follow-up questions:

 In a case where the client's storage pool

Pools don't belong to a client unless you set up the directors schedules
that way and don't run any manually to the pool.

  would of reached it's maximum volume limit (I use this combined with maximum
 volume bytes to control the size of their allocated storage pools) and
 recycle oldest volume would be equal to yes... If all the jobs have already
 passed their retention period, bacula would recycle the oldest volume

if recycle oldest is set yes. If you also set purge oldest, then it
will purge the jobs as well

  regardless of the volume retention period,

recycle oldest respects retention of files and jobs.

 is this correct (on what date is this based btw, the date of the last written
 job?)

I think first written, not totally sure

   And that, as long as the volume wasn't recycled/overwritten, there's always
 possibility to use bscan, re-write the catalogue and restore file-by-file?
 In a case where the file records have expired but not the job records, can I
 simply decide to restore an entire jobid instead of using bscan?

yes, restoring the entire job is always an option if the job record
exists with purged files.

   How about when a volume is purged?

If the volume is purged, then there will be no knowledge of the job or
where it is on the tape, so bscan would be required.

   My understanding is, files can still be recovered, however in this case I'm
 presuming using bscan isn't optional?

bscan required is my understanding.

Dirk

 I think this should be the last of my question :)

Bacula is pretty flexible. I had to read the pool directives, try some
stuff for a bit, then read it again to fully appreciate what it took to
get the results I wanted. Heck, I'm still not sure if I'm quite there
yet.

 Thanks in advance,

Re: [Bacula-users] Overriding Job and/or File Retention Periods?

2009-06-24 Thread Dirk Bartley

If your serious about it, you could always script your way out of it.
Set the file and job retention to the higher of the two desired values,
then conjure up an sql statment that select the jobs that you want to
have the lower retention periods and purge the records desired in a
script.

You could use the scripting language you feel most comfortable. Then
run the script in cron or run after job.

Here is an example of a sql statement

SELECT
  Job.JobId
FROM job
JOIN JobMedia ON JobMedia.JobId=Job.JobId
JOIN Media ON JobMedia.MediaId=Media.MediaId
WHERE media.volumename IN ($medialist)
ORDER BY Job.EndTime
Limit 1
; ;

But you could have it select jobs of a certain jobname or client that
are older than a certain age then purge files from those jobs.

It only takes a bit to set up.

[Bacula-users] Firewall fun

2009-06-23 Thread Dirk Bartley
Greetings

Moved a machine into a dmz behind a pix515e firewall. Created a rule to
allow the fd to connect to the sd and it seems to work, except for one
little peculiarity on a larger backup job.

On a server that backs up about 60GB, it fails at the very tail end of
the backup. The firewall log is showing that it is tearing down the tcp
connection due to a TCP Reset-I then denying the connection a bit later.

I'm not finding much I can do in the firewall to solve the issue. I was
contemplating putting a direct connection cable beween the fd and the sd
to solve this. (Darn cisco, if this firewall was iptables, a solution
would be easy)

Anybody have any other ideas??

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

2009-06-23 Thread Dirk Bartley
Sure, iptables allows for connection based rules as well as the old
ipchains style rules based rules.

So your probably using connection based rules like :
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -m state --state ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT
iptables -A OUTPUT -p tcp -m state --state NEW,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT

just add something like

iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --source fd_dmz_ipaddress --destination
sd_internal_address --dport 9103 ACCEPT

Or something to that effect. This just accepts without considering
whether a connection has been established. At least that's my
understanding of it, I've been less than perfect before though.

  On a server that backs up about 60GB, it fails at the very tail end of

Re: [Bacula-users] 3.0.1 Bat, Yes is an invalid Command

2009-06-19 Thread Dirk Bartley
Your probably experiencing a common thing with the qt widget set and my
lack of knowledge of how to prevent it. Just mouse around on the window
and you should see a grabable splitter window that you can grab and move
over. Then you should see the jobs table.

You may experience that on any page that uses a splitter. I wish the
splitter control would have a more contrasting color.

That happens because I try to pull the splitter from a saved
configuration the last time it was closed.

[Bacula-users] Maximum Concurrent Jobs

2009-06-19 Thread Dirk Bartley
Greetings

I'm trying to understand Maximum Concurrent Jobs.

Here is an example output from status dir

Running Jobs:
Console connected at 19-Jun-09 17:51
 JobId Level   Name   Status
==
  9334 FullAlum3JobMain.2009-06-19_17.01.00_47 is running
  9336 FullAlum2RootJob.2009-06-19_17.01.00_49 is waiting on Storage
Alum2FileStorage
  9337 FullAlum1Job.2009-06-19_17.01.00_50 is waiting on Storage
Alum2FileStorage
  9338 FullAlum3root.2009-06-19_17.01.00_51 is waiting on Storage
Alum2FileStorage
  9339 FullAlum3sharedlvm.2009-06-19_17.01.00_52 is waiting on
Storage Alum2FileStorage
  9340 FullDatabaseJob.2009-06-19_17.01.00_53 is waiting execution
  9341 FullSubversionJob.2009-06-19_17.01.00_54 is waiting for
higher priority jobs to finish

These jobs are all being written to filestorage. Then when they are all
done the low priority jobs will trigger a run after script that will
start them all being copied to tape, but that is later.

So it looks like only one job is running because I have a maximum
concurrent directive relating to storage limiting the number of jobs
running concurrently.

Reading the storage daemons config documentation, there is only one and
it is on the storage daemon itself, not on the Device resource. It is
set to 50.

On this storage daemon I have 2 tape devices and one Filestorage device
on this storage Daemon.

I can see from the director configuration, there is a maximum concurrent
jobs directive for just about every resource. The director resource is
set to 5. All jobs are set to 5 with the exception of the copy jobs.
All client resources are set to 10. Each storage resource in the
directors config is set to a Max of 10.

So I'm not understanding why I can't have more jobs running at the same
time. The pool resource for the File-xxx pool sets Maximum Volume Jobs
= 1 so that each job will have it's own volume (or file on the hard
drive) that it is writing to.

Because I am writing to file first, I am not setting up spooling.

Any possible assistance in helping me understand this is apprecieated.
I guess I could be happy that everything is working, I'ts just that when
someone asks me why I can't get more jobs running concurrently, I want
to be able to answer. Because I know one person will ask.

Dirk

 Are the priorities the same for all jobs but the SubversionJob?

Correct. That is the only job with a different priority.

Subversion job is with a priority = 11
The rest are with priority = 10.

I do this so that it is the last job that starts which triggers the copy
jobs.

Install locations of bat is an issue being addressed I believe. There
were inconsistencies in some of the packaging as well as the basic
install from compiled source.

As a developer I always just run from the source location. All
apologies! I think that having the bat binary read the bat.conf
from /etc/bacula is a very recent thing in the head.

  As a new feature, there are limitations.

 I suspected that might be the case, but the documentation isn't clear

 doesn't act on them correctly.

 If it's limited to acting within a single SD, that will drastically
 reduce its usefulness.

Unfortunately.

Migration (also copy because a copy is just a special case of migration)
is only implemented for a single Storage daemon. You cannot read on one
Storage daemon and write on another.

As a new feature, there are limitations.

I'm using copy jobs. Love em.

 Altogether, four pools exist,
 three disk pools on one machine, one tape pool on the other. The disk
 SD is on a NAS box with a multi-terabyte SAS/SATA array, and owns
 three disk pools on the array. The tape SD is on a separate machine,
 and owns a single pool and an LTO1 drive. The disk array cannot be
 connected to the tape SD because the tape SD's machine has no SAS
 controllers. The tape drive cannot be connected to the disk SD's
 machine because the disk machine has no SCSI controllers and is in an
 insufficiently controlled environment for the tape drive.

 Backups have been running to the disk pools without incident for about
 two months, and I've verified that I can run backup jobs directly to the
 tape drive.

Re: [Bacula-users] Bacula mixing up pools and mount points

2009-06-15 Thread Dirk Bartley
OK, just re-read the storage= option under pool and it is a little bit
confusing to me because I always thought the storage came from the job
defaults, then the schedule resource for that run if it has an override.

From the docs, this means my assumtion was incorrect.

The Storage resource may also be specified in the Job resource, but the
value, if any, in the Pool resource overrides any value in the Job. This
Storage resource definition is not required by either the Job resource
or in the Pool, but it must be specified in one or the other. If not
configuration error will result.

I'd still look at the storage on the job's log. You may want to choose
to put the storage= in the schedule resource just to make sure.

Re: [Bacula-users] [Bacula-devel] multiple copy pools

2009-06-08 Thread Dirk Bartley
Hello Ulrich

I'm just beginning to use copy jobs. Love em!

What I'm doing is having a one to one relationship between tape pools
and File pools.  ie

File-MonWed - LTO_MonWed
File-Monthly - LTO_Monthly
.. ..

Then add one Copy job per pool.

Copy-MonWed
Copy-Monthly
.. ..

Then add one scripty thing,

  RunScript {
Command = /root/bin/php/baculatriggercopy.php %v
RunsWhen = After
RunsOnFailure = yes
RunsOnClient  = no
RunsOnSuccess = yes# default, you can drop this line
  }

where baculatriggercopy.php

where to summarize what bacula trigger copy does it
select the pool from the database then knowing the pool

$job = preg_replace('/File-/', Copy-, $pool);
$concmd = run job=\$job\ fileset=\VariesSet\ level=\Full\ client=
\srvalum3-fd\ pool=\$pool\ storage=\Alum2FileStorage\ priority=
\10\ yes ;

Then I get all uncopied jobs copied from the appropiate file pool to the
appropriate tape pool.

Now I don't know if that was the way intended but it seems to be working
for the last couple of weeks.

 i tried a trick to overcome this limitation.

 1.) define a dummy pool, no backup jobs go into this pool.

 Pool {
   Name = ExtBackup
   Pool Type = Backup
   Next Pool = ExtClone
 }

 2.) define a copy job using the above dummy pool and
 custom sqlquery to select jobid from different pool.

 Job {
   Name = CopyDiskToExtClone
   Type = Copy
   Client = None
   Level = Full # must be defined, but is ignored
   FileSet = None# must be defined, but is ignored

   Selection Type = SQLQuery
   Selection Pattern = SELECT DISTINCT Job.JobId FROM Job,Pool WHERE
  Pool.Name = 'DiskBackup' AND Pool.PoolId = Job.PoolId AND ...
   ...
 }

 using this method i was able top copy jobs from pool DiskBackup
 to pool ExtClone, even though DiskBackup-NextPool = DiskCopy

 can i expect troubles using this trick?

[Bacula-users] Error writing to tape

2009-06-04 Thread Dirk Bartley
Greetings

I'm wonding if anyone may have any ideas of how to prevent this error.
I've been using bacula for a few years in one location and would get an
error like below approximately once every three weeks. It has not been
too big a problem and I am able to just umount mount umount mount and
solve the issue from home. So not to big of an issue for me.

However, I'm getting the oporunity to use bacula at another location and
we have the exact same tape drive there as well. They are both
Certrance LTO2 drives.

These are just single drives with no changers.

If anyone has any experience solving this kind of issue, I would
certainly appreciate the help.

I have done a patch for being able to install on the older qt. If you
wat it, let me know. I'll hunt it down. The issue is not with the
programming but the version of designer I was using. If I open with an
older designer and solve a couple of issues it compiled just fine on
centos.

I'm trying not to keep so up to date lately.

Hello Silver

I'd like to discover what is causing this. Please turn on sql debugging
in preferences and we should be able to isolate the sql command that is
getting the list of files. The result should be an sql query that
should look alot like this:

bat: restore/restoretree.cpp:534 Query cmd : SELECT DISTINCT

File.PathId=269827 AND File.Jobid IN (3641,3632,3619,3606,3593) AND
Filename.Name!='' ORDER BY FileName

The first big question is if the sql query is returning the files in
question. Once I know that I can recommend the next step in figuring
out what is happening.

In psql, I get results like:

 May it be related to it? I also see that there's another folder Töötajad,
 which contains subfolders, and its subfolders are queried OK.

 Also (here comes the second issue ;), if I browse files in Version Browser,
 some of the jobs are marked dark-yellow-green and cannot be selected - why is
 that? One of these jobs is full backup done a month ago and its volume is not
 purged from database yet (although there's a newer full backup of the same
 job that was not completed successfully and its volume is purged now).

After inspecting the code, I tend to think that your assesment of the
volumes showing up yellow as not being purged as possibly being
inaccurate. Unless I've done something usually correct like with the
above case seems like it may be. Please double check, all jobs which
have been purged should show up as uncheckable and darkYellow. Grey is
for jobs that are not purged but have been unchecked and then a refresh
has been done.

  First, what is the interface between BAT and the other Bacula components
  (director, sd, fd, database) ? I ask because I would like to know if it
  would be possible to run BAT on a system other than the director? Does
  it just talk to the director on tcp/9101?

 I don't know what port it uses specifically (I suspect Kern would not
 have changed it, or if he did make such a large change, it would have
 been prominently mentioned), but I do know that it does work remotely. I
 don't have BAT on any system except my laptop, and I've connected to my
 Director.

Bat is designed to be a client to as many directors as the user desires.
You can have as many director stanzas in the conf file as you have
directors in your network. The client can be on any machine it will run
on and the director can be on any host it can run on.

 I'm using BAT to handle my backup routine every day. But it has some
 weird things that i think could be changed.

First, there are anyway to change that behavior of showing a
 selection window to choose the item as a result of a command? Example,
 typing 'status' at BAT console shows a Selection Dialog to choose
 which option I want. Instead, i would prefer the normal behavior of
 showing the list with the options which I could just type a number. It
 ´s faster and more confortable to just stick at the keyboard and don't
 have do get the mouse to choose(i know i could still use the keyboard,
 but i would have to press 'TAB' and the arrows a couple of times).

A request would have to be made of Kern. He was responsible for that
specific part of the code

Second, at the JobPlot window, it could be more human readable
 numbers at the bytes axis, for me, it´s showing that the last backup
 it saved almost 2.5e+07 bytes, not so easy to read.

This would be done within the qwt code. A subclass would have to be
made. It's been a bit since I worked on it. It's a nice suggestion.
I'll add it to my list and see if it is a relatively easy thing to
accomplish.

 I didn´t realize how to change this settings, does anybody
 know how?

There currently exists no setting for this. It could be a setting but
would most likely be written to have some intelligence to guess the most
appropriate unit for the axis.

Re: [Bacula-users] bat does not compile

2007-08-22 Thread Dirk Bartley
All apologies. I don't see anything obvious. It definitely seems to be
going awry right at:

config.status: executing default commands
Creating bat Makefile
WARNING: Found potential symbol conflict of main.cpp (main.cpp) in SOURCES

Which would lead me to believe there is an issue with qmake. I can't even tell
from the output which qmake it will use. ie qmake for qt3 or qmake for qt4.

 The first problem arises during the configure stage and the creation

 WARNING: Found potential symbol conflict of relabel.cpp

 The make depend phase then produces warnings regarding duplications:

 console/Makefile, line 824: warning: duplicate script for target
 obj/main.o ignored

 Several similar other warning are raised.

 The configure options, output from configure, and output from make
 are available at:

http://www.langille.org/tmp/bacula-bat-compile-errors.1.txt

 Also include in the above is the Makefile generated for bat.

 Any ideas?

 Attached is the picture. Notice the dates in the job plot are all

Actually that looks right, you just need to start refining the plot your
seeing. My intention is for the user to be able to start seeing trends
and whether those trends are spiking or gradually changing upwards.

First I'd suggest selecting one job to view and use the refresh button.
Then I'd float the window with the page selector's context menu or the
green up button in the button bar. Then maximize the window to see more
area of the plot. Then keep refining your filter criterion. For
instance change to the last 28 days worth of incremental backups. Then
if you want the plot to be the whole monitor view, use the splitter to
hide the controlling drop downs. That should give you a good Idea of
the trends with incrementals.

bat is configured in a similar fashion to the bconsole. It also has an
advantage of being able to connect to multiple directors. Put as many
director stanzas in the bat.conf file as directors that you would like
to connect to.

Re: [Bacula-users] bat

Hello Jerome

I'm developing on gentoo and my qt4 include files are located
in /usr/include/qt4. Is that where your compiles qt includes were
installed??

 Hello

 I am trying to build my own bacula rpms (to include some home-made
 changes). In this RPM, I have to include BAT (what a nice tool, great
 work Kern and devs ^^), so I need to install Qt 4.2 or better. My
 distribution has no package for this RPM, so I installed it with the
 sources. My problem is that the configure tool does not find Qt.

Can you copy and paste the configure output of where it is failing.

I have
--enable-bat \
--enable-qwt=/usr \
in my configure script. There is no qt option but there is a
requirement of qwt which is an additional requirement of a relatively
small graphing library. Is ./configure failing to find qwt?? or qt??

  I read
 the configure script, it seems to use pkg-config. What can I do to make
 configure to find Qt where it is installed. There does not seem to be a
 --with-qt=$QT_DIRECTORY option in configure.

Kern is responsible for the ./configure script. I know there is someone
already creating rpm spec files. Are you using that spec file
modified?? Are you aware that bat and the most recent bacula that it
will work with has not yet been released officially for production use??

Dirk

 Thank you in advance.

 PS : I know my english is really bad. If you do not understand my
 question, please tell me, I will try to explain better.
