[Bacula-users] Speed of Windows FD
Hi all, I have two identical Win 2k3 servers (Dell PowerEdge 2800, U320 RAID5, dual P4 Xeon 2.8) that I need to backup data onto an FC3 server running Bacula (P4 2.8GHz, USB2 HDD). All three machines have Gigabit cards running on a Gigabit switch with appropriate Cat5e cables. Server1 has two files totaling 5Gb. Bacula grabs these files at about 25MB/sec - total backup time is under 4mins. Server2 has ~4000 files totaling 100Gb. The problem is that Bacula is only running at about 50Kb/sec for this server - simple maths tells us that it's going to take 3.5 weeks to backup the entire server! There's obviously something awry here - can anyone give me any ideas what to look into? The networking between the machines all appears to be fine (I can pull off large files between the Win 2k3 servers at around 30MB/sec) so it seems to be something to do with the Bacula FD. Thanks for any ideas! MattB --- This SF.Net email is sponsored by Oracle Space Sweepstakes Want to be the first software developer in space? The bacula-fd process on Server2 is using at most about 2%. Mem usage is very low (3Mb). Nothing else is using the processor or disks intensively on that machine at the moment and bconsole is reporting about 3MB/sec transfer (speed changes wildly it seems, but never very fast!) The bacula server is running around 5-15% for bacula-sd. Again, nothing much else is happening on that server, load average: 0.21, 0.12, 0.09. Is there any profiling I can run on the Windows FD client, or at least see a file-by-file progress? --- This SF.Net email is sponsored by Oracle Space Sweepstakes Want to be the first software developer in space? RE: [Bacula-users] Speed of Windows FD
Hi Simon, The bacula server is running at 1000Mbps, full duplex: tg3: eth0: Link is up at 1000 Mbps, full duplex. tg3: eth0: Flow control is on for TX and on for RX. I'm trying to figure out at what speed/duplex the Windows server is but the switch it's plugged into shows that's it's also 1000Mbps full duplex. Cabling is all Cat5e. [Bacula-users] Volume recycling
I'm having a tough time trying to get Bacula to recycle volumes properly. I'm trying to backup a Windows server with a full backup on Sunday and incrementals Monday to Saturday. Backup is to a removable USB disk and I want the filenames to be automatically created in the format ProductionVol001, ProductionVol002 etc through to ProductionVol007, after which it will go back to 001 again. My relevant config entries are: Pool { Name = Production Use Volume Once = yes Pool Type = Backup LabelFormat = "ProductionVol" AutoPrune = yes Volume Retention = 7 days Maximum Volumes = 7 Recycle = yes } Client { Name = production-fd Address = production FDPort = 9102 Catalog = MyCatalog Password = "password" # password for FileDaemon File Retention = 30 days# 30 days Job Retention = 6 months# six months AutoPrune = yes # Prune expired Jobs/Files } Job { Name = "ProductionFiles" JobDefs = "DefaultJob" Client = production-fd Write Bootstrap = "/var/bacula/ProductionFiles.bsr" FileSet = "ProductionFiles" Pool = Production } The problem is that every time the schedule runs I'm getting the all-too-familiar error (below). All other backup jobs then stop completely. 25-May 08:43 backup-sd: Job ProductionFiles.2005-05-25_08.43.07 waiting. Cannot find any appendable volumes. Please use the "label" command to create a new Volume for: Storage: FileStorage Media type: File Pool: Production If I use label (which in my reckoning I should never need to do as Bacula should automatically create the label for me) then it works for that time, but next time it'll halt again with the same error. Can anyone throw me any pointers? [Bacula-users] Recycling problems
I'm using Bacula to backup files to USB hard drives. Every Monday morning I manually run a full backup to a large hard drive, then every evening Bacula runs incremental backups to another drive. At the moment I manually swap the two drives so there's only one Storage device that Bacula sees (I can't figure out how to make bacula use two storage devices for the same pool). The system works fairly well, however sometimes I get the dreaded "Cannot find any appendable volumes" and all backups stop. [Bacula-users] Single Pool, multiple Storage
I'm setting up a backup to disk system (USB external drives), basically running Full monthly, Diff weekly, Inc daily, very similar to the system here: http://www.bacula.org/rel-manual/Automated_Disk_Backup.html The difference is that I also need to implement off-site storage for disaster situations. My idea is to have a drive that's always hooked up running the daily incrementals and a larger drive that I only bring in for the full and differentials. That way I always have the latest incremental backup to hand and always have the full and diff offsite for safety. The obvious way to implement this is have two Device resources, one for each USB drive mounted on the backup server. Whilst you can specify the Storage device per job, this doesn't help as my job uses multiple pools (Full, Inc, Diff) which is what I'm trying to split out. Is there a solution or workaround to this? [Bacula-users] Incremental Pool and day-specific filenames
I'm trying to setup a backup system with Full on the first Sunday of each month, Diff on subsequent Sundays and Incrementals daily. Backups are written to external USB hard drives. I'm following quite closely the example given at http://www.bacula.org/rel-manual/Automated_Disk_Backup.html. The change I'm making is that I need to backup multiple servers. I've amended the pools and jobs as needed but I have one problem. The pool file is not being renamed on the disk drive I'm using. Ie if I run an incremental backup on Feb 24th the file created is Inc-2006-02-24. The next incremental backup on the next day uses the same filename, not Inc-2006-02-25 as expected, which is messing up the volume recycling. Configuration snippets are below Any pointers please? RE: [Bacula-users] Incremental Pool and day-specific filenames
I thought that may be the case. Bacula is a great system but every solution I try with a disk-based backup fails for one reason or another :( I'm sure it's perfect for tapes but I'm struggling to make it work successfully with disks. All I have is about 6 backup locations and I need to do a full monthly, diff weekly and inc daily system. I have three USB drives - a 1TB unit for fulls, a .5TB unit for diffs and a 250MB unit for incrementals. It can't be this difficult!
