Re: [Bacula-users] Bacula and Windows XP client: dir/file names with spec. chars (unicode?) - and bat!

2007-12-08 Thread Michael Lewinger
As far as I have checked it, char encoding trouble is seen only
between non-Unicode and Unicode clients, i.e., files from non-Unicode
systems can be restored to non-Unicode systems (same for Unicode). If
the chars are not properly displayed on the director's interface,
there's no need to worry, but I'd certainly test recovery for those
files on the original client. In my case all recovers are done
properly.

Re: [Bacula-users] 2.2.6 Client OS/X / Darwin Packages?

2007-11-24 Thread Michael Lewinger
Hello,

The Bacula client compiles cleanly on macosx, and I'm positive the
other components should as well, after installing mysql. Maybe you can
test drive it with the built-in sqlite dbase. I can't remember exactly
the procedure for auto starting bacula upon launch, just install
osxvnc, and adapt their startup scripts - they comply to Apple's code
rules and general unix coding and anyway they are quite short a few
lines at most, so it wouldn't be much of a problem.

Cheers,

Michael

[Bacula-users] 2 cents of advice on home networks (OT)

2007-11-24 Thread Michael Lewinger
Hi there,

Of course I use bacula otherwise I wouldn't be writing to this list
albeit on a slightly off-topic subject...

After being through an horrible month of troubleshooting my unstable
home network setup (ADSL/wifi), I want to throw in some advice: before
switching routers, modem, ADSL provider, the works... at least in my
case, this time, I changed the cable that linked the router to the
modem, and my network is back to normal.

I hope this saves YOU time in your next troubleshooting day... :)

Hi Luiygui

I suppose you're still barely alive. :)

Running bacula directly (bacula-dir) instead of through the init
script will at least show you which line it is having problems with,
and the particular directive it finds amusing. If you could please
post the config file (paste it into the mail window) maybe I can give
a shot. OK, badly phrased, no shooting, I want you to live through
this ! :)

This gives me some food for thought (pizza preferably): bacula is
tested on a variety of DAT/LTO devices, but how does it go about SCSI
controllers ? Is there any particular recommendation ?

Re: [Bacula-users] Problem with automounting

2007-11-17 Thread Michael Lewinger
Hi Frank,

If it requires mount = no, how does automatic mount = yes comes in ?

Try this, from the vanilla bacula-sd.conf:

 AutomaticMount = yes # when device opened, read it
 AlwaysOpen = yes
 RemovableMedia = no
 RandomAccess = yes

See ? No requires mount there ? And it owkrs in my case...

Re: [Bacula-users] restore backups to another server

2007-11-17 Thread Michael Lewinger
Hello Robert,

You do NOT want to restore with bacula-dir, you need only to install
the client on the other windows server. The restore is performed on
the director machine (the original bacula director daemon).

1) connect to director
2) install bacula-fd on the "other server"
3) open bacula-dir.conf on the main server
4) define the new client (the new "server") as per the bacula-fd
definitons in step 2 and save.
from next step on bconsole:
5) type "reload"
6) type "restore"
7) choose the job/client you wish to restore
8) mark files
9) after all done, and before you proceed with restore, type "mod"
10) choose the NEWLY DEFINED client (as per step 4)
11) type "yes" and wait for the restore to proceed over the net to the
new "server".

Good luck !

Re: [Bacula-users] backup issue with batch table

2007-11-15 Thread Michael Lewinger
Sorry my mistake:

 You are using a MyISAM table and the space required for the table
exceeds what is allowed by the internal pointer size. MyISAM creates
tables to allow up to 4GB by default (256TB as of MySQL 5.0.6), but
this limit can be changed up to the maximum allowable size of 65,536TB
(2567 – 1 bytes).

If you need a MyISAM table that is larger than the default limit and
your operating system supports large files, the CREATE TABLE statement
supports AVG_ROW_LENGTH and MAX_ROWS options. See Section 12.1.5,
"CREATE TABLE Syntax". The server uses these options to determine how
large a table to allow.

Hi Florian,

It would probably be incredibly fast without compression, 4 MB/s is probably
the compression rate @ the client.

Hi John,

The card you use has its own BIOS boot functions, you should check which
options are relevant, and either cancel them, or cancel "external storage"
or something of the sorts in your motherboard.

[Bacula-users] old windows version

2007-11-01 Thread Michael Lewinger
Hello,

The newer versions of the bacula file daemon do not work properly on
pre-unicode windows versions - the filenames became unusable on the
2.2.5server, as all non-utf characters were stripped out of the
filename. I'm
speaking specifically about Hebrew file names but maybe other UTF languages
such as Chinese are affected as well.
I did not see any option of pre-unicode filename in the fileset/client
resource, and I'm not sure I can deal with bacula's code (or any code to
that matter :). Am I missing something ?
As an interim solution, could I use a pre-1.37.28 file daemon version with
the 2.2.5 dir daemon ? Where can I download any pre-1.37.28 windows client
installer ? The latest windows fd installer is 2.2.3, and none of the 1.Xbranch.

Thanks,

Re: [Bacula-users] Bacula and MS Exchange.

2007-10-31 Thread Michael Lewinger
Silver,

Please follow this link (text quoted from pp 538 of Bacula's PDF manual):

In Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 the VSS Writer for Exchange
is turned off by default. To turn it on, please see the following link:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q838183

VSS and Exchange:

Also, somewhere in Microsfot, there's the outline of a a procedure for
backing up individual mailboxes.

Cheers,

Michael

Re: [Bacula-users] bacula 2.2.5: some job never finish

2007-10-30 Thread Michael Lewinger
Hi Lise,

If this is a recurrent problem, there may be a problem with the query,
maybe related to characters (I doubt) or accessing a problematic file
(maybe...). Check the mysql server with the "SHOW PROCESSLIST"
command, maybe the stuck query will show in the info field.

Cheers,

Michael

Re: [Bacula-users] multiple copies

2007-10-30 Thread Michael Lewinger
Sure, although I have not tried it myself. I suppose you could do better by
using a filesystem replicator as used on DRP instead of trying to make this
work on bacula. Cloning jobs would be spending twice the time required for a
single job, and be run sequentially (although they may be also run
concurrently).

1) Re: "duplicate" jobs, pp 135-136 of the PDF manual, referring to one of
the "Job" directives ("run"):

quote-
Run = The Run directive (not to be confused with the Run
option in a Schedule) allows you to start other jobs or to clone jobs.
By using the cloning keywords (see below), you can backup the same
data (or almost the same data) to two or more drives at the same
time. The job-name is normally the same name as the current Job
resource (thus creating a clone). However, it may be any Job name,
so one job may start other related jobs.
136 CHAPTER 11. CONFIGURING THE DIRECTOR
The part after the equal sign must be enclosed in double quotes, and
can contain any string or set of options (overrides) that you can specify
when entering the Run command from the console. For example
storage=DDS-4 In addition, there are two special keywords
that permit you to clone the current job. They are level=%l and
since=%s. The %l in the level keyword permits entering the actual
level of the current job and the %s in the since keyword permits putting
the same time for comparison as used on the current job. Note, in the
case of the since keyword, the %s must be enclosed in double quotes,
and thus they must be preceded by a backslash since they are already
inside quotes. For example:
run = "Nightly-backup level=%l since=\"%s\" storage=DDS-4"
A cloned job will not start additional clones, so it is not possible to
recurse.
---end of quote--

2) Duplicate catalog: standard SQL replication practices are probably better
but you can configure two catalogs on bacula (in this case the clone job
should use the other catalog). You won't need to use the BACULA DIRECTOR on
the secondary server, only the SD daemon and a mysql server. The cloned jobs
would be stored on the seconday bacula server, and the originating jobs on
the primary.

3) rcp your bacula conf files to the secondary server, just in case.

No solution except maybe filesystem replication would produce an exact copy.
Trying "another method" such as 1) 2) and 3) will produce maybe a very
similar result, certainly usable, but not identical. For instance, slight
differences in the copy time on the client will produce slightly different
file versions (except if you'll be using concurrent FD copies+snapshot).

Cheers,

Michael

Re: [Bacula-users] "Cannot Connect to Client" Error

2007-10-29 Thread Michael Lewinger
Hi Jon,

can you post the client fd.conf and the director's respective "client",
"job" and "director" directives, maybe without obfuscation ? If not, please
post the same data with simulated IPs, as if theose were the client and dir
IP, and use them as obfuscated IPs in the conf files.

Cheers,

Michael

Re: [Bacula-users] scsi problems

2007-10-29 Thread Michael Lewinger
Hi Michael,

tar is not checking while writing, but bacula does. Is the read error on
subsequent tests failing at the same block ?

29-Oct 21:27 btape JobId 0: Error: block.c:995 Read error on fd=3 at
file:blk 0:1000

I'd suggest cleaning the tape head anyway (how frequently do you do it ?),
reformat the tape, and check again.

Re: [Bacula-users] Disk-to-disk-tape backups

2007-10-29 Thread Michael Lewinger
Sure, here it is. Everything derived from pp 423 of the manual.

on the storage daemon:

Device {
 Name = disk#
 Media Type = file
 Device Type = file
 Archive Device = C:/bacula/backup_data
 AutomaticMount = yes # when device opened, read it
 AlwaysOpen = yes
 RemovableMedia = no
 RandomAccess = yes
^^
 Spool Directory = C:/bacula/temp
^^
}

on the director daemon:

JobDefs {
  Name = "DefaultJob"
  Type = Backup
  Level = Incremental
  Client = michaelpc
  FileSet = "docs"
  Schedule = "default"
  Storage = disk
  Messages = Standard
  Pool = Default
  Priority = 10
^^
  SpoolData = yes
^^
}

Cheers,

Michael

Re: [Bacula-users] TSM-style perpetual-full?

2007-10-29 Thread Michael Lewinger
Hello Mike,

What you are talking about is regular practice, and is what is attained by
the "incremental" feature, so I guess that TSM and bacula are the same
there. The first time it is run, an inc. backup will be promoted to full,
and afterwards, only inc. will be performed. Good backup practices demand
that a full backup be performed at least once a month in case a tape fails.

HOWEVER once a file is deleted, it will only be effectively removed from a
restore when a FULL backup takes place thus skipping it (it was deleted,
right ?). Until then, post-deletion recoveries will produce the deleted
file, updated to its latest version. (duh). In practice, until you do a
second full backup, you'll keep recovering long-ago unnecessary, deleted
files, hence the need for some full backup policy. It would be easier on a
slow network to recreate full backups using MD5 and files already present in
bacula's volumes but this would complicate tape maintenance enormously. The
keep-number-of-files feature is interesting though, as an alternative to
date-based retention times. AFAIK bacula does not have this feature.

Maybe - this is a BIG maybe - there should be an option of reusing already
stored files, and make full backups assembly on slow networks: 1) check MD5
on client, 2) Compare file identity to file table on catalog 3) HEY, I have
this file already ! Let's make a list of volumes necessary, and ask the user
to supply us the required volumes, 4) Spool the reused files (as if they
were d/l) 5) Voila !

It looks to me this is the "base" backup level, but until more of this
feature shows up on the docs...

Re: [Bacula-users] TSM-style perpetual-full?

2007-10-29 Thread Michael Lewinger
Hi Mike,

Yes, I agree that Bacula's method for upgrading an incremental backup to
full if no full backups are found is a good feature (expected though) but it
does not work the way I'd like it to. For instance there is an explicit
"ignore fileset changes" options to circunvent a methodic upgrade-to-full
when changing fileset - why such an option ?. If we're calculating MD5
signatures to each file, in this case, I'd expect Bacula to transfer only
"NEW" files and "replenish" the old full backup with the new data according
to the new fileset - more or less "add to the jobid XXX those files as
they're new". Bend the rules a little, it is not like bacula can be used by
the average home user. Transferring the WHOLE set of data again is the easy
way to say "full is full, and data transfer is cheap", which is not always
the case.

It seems to me that in bacula's restore you can choose both by point in
time, by most recent full backup, and particular folders/files, so

Finally, regarding your question - eventually I'm reacting to it. I'm not
sure that I understand the TSM "perpetual" feature, maybe the name is
misleading. RTFM 4 me will do it, but until then - is there no "parallel"
feature in Bacula, or a procedure for emulating this feature ?

Hi Mike,

It looks all things are covered in Bacula: retention times, incremental
backup. But then I'm not a TSM expert.

Re: [Bacula-users] "Cannot Connect to Client" Error

Hi Jon,

I read somewhere (in the conf file ?) that localhost should not be used. Add
an alias to 127.0.0.1 in your /etc/hosts file and use it instead.

Re: [Bacula-users] Device blocked.

2007-10-29 Thread Michael Lewinger
Hi Gary,

It seems jobid 491 is stuck. Maybe you should cancel it is the director.
Wait a couple of minutes (at least in the latest bacula version) to release
the volume. If after 10 minutes the job hasn't been effectively cancelled,
restart the storage daemon. PS: You may lose the jobs currently waiting for
the SD.

Cheers,

Michael Lewinger

I think the right command are bscan and bextract, pp 485 on the latest

[Bacula-users] I need an older bacula windows version, or... ?

2007-10-28 Thread Michael Lewinger
Hello,

The newer versions of the bacula file daemon do not work properly on
pre-unicode windows versions - the filenames became unusable when written to
the 2.2.5 server catalog, where all non-utf characters were stripped out of
the filename. I'm speaking specifically about Hebrew file names but maybe
other UTF languages such as Chinese are affected as well.
I did not see any option for pre-unicode filename in the fileset/client
resource, and I'm not sure I can deal with bacula's code (or any code to
that matter :).

Thanks,
