You're right, I completely forgot about costs. Definitely, using S3 plugin will be much more cheaper than using Amazon Storage Gateway VTL. On my scenario, Cloud (S3) is the only place where I could save my backups, but I fully understand the comparison you made about your on premises environment. My university runs a backup service where we only pay for storage. We ran with it for a couple of years and the money quickly added up to where it was cheaper to buy a new storage chassis full of sata drives *every other year* and have it co-located at CompSci a few blocks away. The only way I can see this working out is you absolutely must have your backups of-site and have absolutely nowhere to colocate your backup box, or if your colo charges will be comparable to S3. Hello guys, I hope you're doing well I have a question: So far, which is the best combination for storing backups on S3 using Bacula? Is it through the new Cloud plugin? or is it best to use the Amazon VTL integration with Bacula? Which of these is the more reliable for production environments? Which one would you use? My scenario seems to be simple enough: I need to backup data from several EC2 instances using Bacula and Amazon S3, both (EC2 and S3) in the same region. So bandwidth and data transfer pricing wouldn't be an issue for me. I hope someone can share his experiences and/or recommendations.
