Re: [Basfa] Westercon74 PR3

2021-10-24 Thread Adrienne Foster via Basfa
PDFs for all of the progress reports are available at:
http://westercon74.org/whats-on/publications/
FWIW, the pages were laid out and paginated for the sheet to be folded into
quarters. When printed back-to-back, the inside can be opened to a full page.
It highlights the convention's biggest news with direction to its website for
more details.
My father was a bookbinder, so the layout came natural to me. I thought it was
an easy way to organize the details.
The next one will include details for hotel booking.
Looking forward to seeing everyone there!

A combination of screenshots and the Preview application let me make a properly
oriented screen - readable .pdf out of Westercon's PR3, for any interested.
The nice feature of Preview is that you can select a number of pages on your
screen, drag them to Preview, and it will treat them as a single document for
printing--I do this daily for Gayle with the puzzles in USA Today.

Sorry to bother you, but this is something I
 sincerely thought everyone
 would want to know about.

I knew I sometimes misplaced things,
but I thought I kept pretty good
track of my money.  Today I found a
tip in AARP Magazine.  I went to
 unclaimed.org (the National
 Association of Unclaimed Property
Administrators) and filled out a short
form; in well under 10 minutes had
found two checks totaling about $150
 that I didn't remember anything

annoying if you need to look under
multiple names or in multiple states,
or if you have a common name.

 Good luck!  Let people know.

[Basfa] BASFA Meetup page

2019-03-29 Thread Adrienne Foster via Basfa
This email is to follow up the business I brought up at the March 4 meeting. My
apologies for not sending this sooner.

Within the last several weeks, it occurred to me that my Meetup.com account is
no longer personal to me. Bay Area Ghost Hunters, now falls under the corporate
umbrella of the recently filed West Coast Paranormal Events, Inc., so it has
become rather awkward for me to allow the BASFA group to piggyback at WCPE's
expense. For those who want to refer to the page, it can be found at:

https://www.meetup.com/Bay-Area-Science-Fiction-Association/

For those who aren't familiar with Meetup, organizers pay for their spaces on
the website and can have up to three groups on their accounts. Their plans have
changed over the years, but at present BAGH is paying $89.94 every six months
for its presence there. Explaining to my board why I'm giving BASFA space is
something I cannot justify, especially if they might find another use for it.

So, I can immediately think of three options on how BASFA wants to deal with it:

1.    WCPE and BASFA can split the cost.
2.    I can turn the organizer (admin) privileges over to an officer and BASFA
can take complete ownership over its page.
3.    Remove the group from Meetup altogether.

It is fairly common on Meetup for an organizer to step down from a group
without nominating a replacement. When they do this, an offer goes out to the
all of the group's on-line members to take it over. If I do that, there's no
promise who would take it over and it would likely lose its connection to
BASFA. I also wouldn't want to take the chance that an outsider would continue
to use BASFA's name. That would create two BASFA groups to confuse people. (I
really don't want to go  through the time-consuming hassle of cleaning off all
the BASFA details before I let it go.)
Considering BASFA's Meetup page has attracted nearly 600 members and bring
fresh faces to its meetings, it might be worth holding onto.
If BASFA opts to take complete ownership over its Meetup page, it would become
easier to collect money through the rsvp process because it could go directly
to a BASFA account. Meetup has a couple of other "organizer subscription"
options, but I believe BASFA already has the one that suits it best. (I don't
think Meetup Pro is worth it.) However, if you want to consider the other price
plans, you can find them at:

https://help.meetup.com/hc/en-us/articles/360001620472-Organizer-subscription-pricing-and-plans

BASFA might choose another alternative once the group has thought it over. For
instance, if BASFA takes ownership, it could hand admin responsibility over to
Ken Patterson and split the cost with Legion of Rassilon, giving LOR a presence
on Meetup. (Or perhaps, we can split it three ways.)

I ask the officers and group to consider how they want to handle this. I'll be
at the April 8 meeting to find out what your decision is.

On Friday, Dr. Jerry Pournelle died in his sleep.

I called him Doc.

He won the Cold War.

Whenever I mentioned it to him, he always pointed out that Marilyn Niven had
kept everybody on the large Space Advisory Council magnificently fed* and
deserved the credit. Not out of any of that negative boasting known as modesty,
but giving credit where it was due**.

The first time I met him (other than signings) was at BayCon 2006, and he and
Larry and I were standing around talking about Known Space while waiting for
the banquet. Doc said, "This guy comes up with an intelligent race whose
females are nonsentient, and I have to work out how they raise their kids." I
replied, "He also comes up with an intelligent race that eats their mutants,
and I have to figure out how they evolved." We exchanged a professional glance:
I looked at him; he looked at me; we both looked at Larry; "Banquet's
starting," said Larry. [I think it was nice for both of us to know someone
smarter than we were. I at least knew two such. Now I'm down to one.]

I was on exactly one panel with him: Interstellar Espionage, at FurCon 2007. He
opened by saying, "I know absolutely nothing about interstellar espionage,"
then kept the room riveted until someone came in to tell us we had run an hour
and a half over.

I have been in my room alone so much since Friday that my roomie Valerie was
getting worried. It finally occurs to me that he knew and liked my work, and
therefore I should commemorate his life by writing more.

The fight was long, and the foe was strong, but he paid as good as he got.

an escape the socialist mindset could not use. It has finally occurred to me
that the reason he didn't spell this out for me was that he expected me to get
it. High praise. MJH

   - Too Like the Lightning: A Novel (Terra Ignota) by Ada Palmer. Extremely
difficult to get in the beginning, almost put it down after the first 20 pages.
Pseudo 18th Century prose (including the My dear reader info dumps). Has gotten
better. Recommends.
   - Watched 7 episodes of Stranger Things. Really enjoyable.

Andy: The drought is over, we had an Easter with Doctor Who! Final season of
Moffat and Capaldi. New companion is apparently ordinary (yay!) Plays off of
Capaldi in 5 minutes, than Clara did. Had fun with the formula of companion
introduction story. Kevin follows on: Bill is gay, and was done really nice and
natural. Adrienne enjoyed the episode. Better than series 9.
Atheus: Saw new MST3K on Netflix. Some episode were too self aware, but still
bonkers. FX and puppets have upgrades. Worth missing first day of a con.
We had auctions and the rumor of the week was: We'll have more people here next
Meeting.

Meeting adjourned at: 21:02

Oh, dang. I just noticed they're sold out for April 23, but they're also doing
it May 25, June 25, July 20, and so on through September. See their description

I think members of BASFA might be interested the public tours Lick Observatory
is offering. If you can't make it April 23, it appears to be something they'll
be doing monthly, at least for a little while.

[Basfa] Catching up on our Meetup.com page

2017-01-13 Thread Adrienne Foster via Basfa
FWIW, I caught up on posting BASFA's meeting minutes at our Meetup.com page.
They're posted in descending order with the most recent meeting first, but that
could change if anyone comments on them. They go back as far as October 27,
2014, which is about the time our Meetup group page was created. This is an
uninterrupted run of them. If anyone needs to research them, this is probably
the best place to go since it has been a challenge finding all the different
places they've been posted—they haven't all been sent to the e-mail list. All
minutes were taken by our secretary, Barbara Johnson-Haddad, unless otherwise
noted. For anyone who needs to refer to the minutes, you'll find them at:
https://www.meetup.com/Bay-Area-Science-Fiction-Association/messages/boards/forum/19798162
Now I'm going to go back and check on our meeting attendance.

[Basfa] Looking for volunteers on non-profit board

2017-01-05 Thread Adrienne Foster via Basfa
A board of directors is currently forming for West Coast Paranormal Events
Inc., a new non-profit corporation that will be formally overseeing Bay Area
Ghost Hunters and looking into putting on a traveling paranormal convention,
which will be loosely using the World Science Fiction Convention as a model.
For those interested in the paranormal, their community is in the same
situation the speculative fiction genre was in back in the 40s and 50s. There
are lots of people interested, but the gatherings I've been to have all left
something to be desired. Most don't last much longer than a day and many
nickel-and-dime attendees who want to do more than sit in on programming or go
to the dealers room. I believe there is a place for something bigger and better.
We are recruiting nine people who at least have a respect for the subject
matter and have had substantial experience organizing events. Since there is a
lot of overlap between paranormal buffs and science fiction fans, I have been
hoping some of my friends in the science fiction community would be interested
in joining us to produce a convention with a whole new focus, the paranormal,
including but not limited to scientific research, literature—both non-fiction
and fiction, art, photography, film, etc. Once again, I am loosely using San
Francisco Science Fiction Conventions Inc. (SFSFC) as a model for our
corporation. A term of office will last 3 years, but for the initial board, six
of the members will have terms of either 1 or 2 years. The current plan is to
meet every 4 months (or three times a year).

As of this writing, we have four more positions to fill. Five members have
already been recruited, including:
 Adrienne Foster
 Loyd Auerbach
 Bill Samuels
 Maurine Starkey
 Stacy Meyn
The people working on this board will be unpaid volunteers. Ideally, we would
like someone who lives in the San Francisco Bay Area, but we won't dismiss any
good candidates who live elsewhere. Please PM me if interested. West Coast
Paranormal Events is the name I reserved with the State of California and I am
currently putting together the paperwork to file. I will need all nine people
to sign the documents for filing with the state soon.

Re: [Basfa] BASFA Locations, Polls and Voting

2016-04-12 Thread Adrienne Foster via Basfa

I notice that voters are required to rank all the venues listed no matter what.
It seems that once they vote "None of the Above," they should be finished. Is
there any way to eliminate that? Or does anyone else feel that we should rank
all of them regardless?

Subject: [Basfa] BASFA Locations, Polls and Voting

The Relocation Committee is proud to present the first stage in settling the
location of our new meeting place. As discussed at the meeting on Monday, 4
April, instead of voting on all the locations at a designated meeting, the
Relocation Committee will be presenting the results of an online survey as the
recommendation of the Committee. This survey will allow the voice of the entire
membership, regardless of their ability to attend the meeting with the actual
vote, to be heard.

The poll uses the Instant Runoff Voting, what the Hugo Awards used or their
ballots (so many of you will be familiar with that). The winner of this poll
will be brought before the members at the meeting on 4 May, 2016 as the
recommendation of the Committee for ratification.

As was recommended at the meeting on Monday, 28 March, the chosen site will be
used exclusively for a month (to discover and iron out any issues that may
occur.) If we are satisfied, we will make that our new permanent home. The
first meeting of that month trial will be on Monday, 16 May.

You have heard of the dreaded BASFA voting block, here is the dreaded BASFA
voting link: https://www.opavote.com/vote/4756150994075648

The poll is currently open, and will close on Saturday, 30 April.

Please vote responsibly...

The list of restaurants that we will have been at as of the May 2 meeting are
as follows (in order of appearance):

   - Round Table Pizza, Sunnyvale (12/21, 12/28, 1/4, 1/11, 1/18, 2/1, 2/15,
2/29)
   - Omega’s Family Restaurant, Milpitas (1/25, 4/18)
   - Black Bear Diner, Milpitas (2/8, 3/14, 3/28, 5/2)
   - Lyon’s, San Jose (2/22, 4/11, 4/25)
   - Old Spaghetti Factory, San Jose (3/7)
   - Faz, San Jose (3/21)
   - Mimi’s Cafe, San Jose (4/4) [note: we would need to move to Tuesdays to be
able to do every week]

We still need to schedule a location for the May 9 meeting, just so we’re not
booking it last minute, so the month long run for the selected restaurant will
be May 16 - June 13(which will incorporate the post Memorial Day convention
visitors.)

Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck were good eye candy. Alex followed on that despite

Dear Bay Area Science Fiction Association, I am organizing a film screening in
Santa Cruz, which, I realize is quite a distance from where you normally
meetup. However, I thought I would reach out to you in case you had members who
live around there, or, would be willing to trek over to see an rare science
fiction film, "Sleep Dealer" - if you are interested, here is the link:
http://www.meetup.com/Movies-plays-theater-and-...
The screening is FREE. Please message me if you have questions. February 16,

Association)

Meetup ~~~ Respond by replying directly to this email ~~~ ✎ Channing
Joseph (Bay Area Science Fiction Association) Bay Area Science Fiction
Association Channing Joseph Thought some of your members might be interested
in this event. SF Weekly Newspaper is calling it one of the "can't miss
exhibits" of February.

Science fiction has a reputation for attracting nerdy white guys, but there was
one black woman writer who could slay Comic-Book Guy from The Simpsons and The
Lone Gunmen from The X-Files, and fend off any nettlesome Trekkies while
suppressing a yawn. Afrofuturist, MacArthur Award winner, and supreme genius
Octavia Butler (1947-2006) wrote brilliant novels like The Parable of the Sower
and The Parable of the Talents (set in a dystopian, near-future California)
that consider topics like gender, the morphology of race, cultural imperialism,
and the future of the species alongside more typical sci-fi fare like weird
aliens. Ten years after her death, Butler is being honored with two shows at
the end of the month.

First, Live Worms Gallery straddles Black History Month and Women's History
Month with Octavia's Attic: ARTifacts From Our Possible Futures (Feb. 24 -
March 2), a compendium of over two dozen artists. Through the use of painting
to video art to interactive installations, these creative minds have been
tasked with re-imagining "time-navigation tools" discovered posthumously in
Butler's attic and which she may or may not have singlehandedly dragged from
other dimensions. Expect post-psychedelic poster art from Black Kirby,
spoken-word incantations from Walidah Imarisha, a "psychotemporal transcranial
stimulation device (PTSD)" from lawyer and science fiction author Rasheedah
Phillips, which allows visitors to experience past events, and more.

Relatedly, a two-day show called Parables of the Future, an interactive art and
science event that combines choreography with the current science on time
travel, arrives Feb. 27-28. Featuring Brontez Purnell, Shinnerrie Jackson, and
University of Connecticut physics professor Dr. Ronald Mallett, it might open
up a tear in the space-time continuum and fill it with paradoxes of queer
African-American awesomeness. (The only thing better than learning how to build
your own time machine is hearing an original performance set to Butler's own
text, right?)

Octavia’s Attic: ARTifacts From Our Possible Futures, Feb. 24 - March 2, at
Live Worms Gallery, 1345 Grant Ave., sflivewormsgallery.com, octaviasattic.com.

Just to state the obvious

You do not want to click on that link.

I did a very cursory check and it is a redirect to ovvlm.com which is a
domain just created a few days ago and which is using nameservers in RU.
