Re: help with starting bbdb3

2013-09-15 Thread Michael
Thanks for all the info and comparisons Stephen. I do appreciate it.
I've used mutt for a number of years, but now have to have Windows
running. Yes, I did specify text based, but I can use VM or gnus. What
I want is a separate email program that's just mine. I get a lot of
maillist mail and don't want others opening email program.

My problem is having to learn a new program and then learning lisp
stuff too, but if VM is easy to set up, I'll take a look at it :)

Thanks again.

However, still trying to figure out how to get it all working :)

This would be the mailing list; there's not a separate one for newbies.
You could ask on #emacs on irc.freenode.net as well.

I have nothing bad to say against Rmail, but, for the record, a very basic
Gnus setup is merely setting gnus-select-method in ~/.gnus to one of the
backends. So, for example to read the standard mbox file, you'd do

(setq gnus-select-method '(nnmbox ""))

2013-09-15 Thread Barak A. Pearlmutter
I have a version packaged for Debian in the branch debian-v3.x in git://
github.com/barak/bbdb3, it would be great if you'd try it. Reports of
problems particularly welcome. If there are instructions to make it easier
for users to get started, and they amount to startup code, I'd be happy to
include them in the site-init file. If just text, but Debian-specific, they
could be included in the package doc directory in README.Debian

help with starting bbdb3

2013-09-14 Thread Michael
I have emacs23 on Debian testing, and also downloaded and installed bbdb3.
Is there a bbdb list for newbies on how to get started using bbdb or an IRC
channel?
I need a text email client for both unix type os and Windows and that has a
good address database. Gnus seems hard to set up, so thot I would try Rmail
and bbdb.
I have about 250 megs of new messages that I would like to go through and
build a new database. In the past, I used abook and lbdb.

Thanks for any help
