Applescripting a Text Factory

2008-08-29 Thread bigga

any idea why this script won't work? I've tried it with the file open
and targeting "document 1" and it won't work that way either.

---
set FactoryFile to "path:to:myfactoryfile" --as string
set TargetFile to "path:to:mytargetfile"

tell application "BBEdit"
with timeout of 15000 seconds
apply text factory FactoryFile to TargetFile saving ask without
returning results and showing results
beep
end timeout
end tell
--

I always get this error: "BBEdit got an error: Could not make some
data into the desired type (MacOS Error code: -1700)"

I'm using v 8.5.2 on a Mac Mini with Leopard 10.5.4

Thanks in advance.

I'm working on preparing an installation of the default 9.0
clipping set for those with needs similar to yours. In the
meantime, we do recommend that you avoid crawling around in the
package, though of course there's nothing to stop you from doing
so. Just be careful. :-)

Re: Autocompletion -- getting it happening in HTML?

2008-08-29 Thread HT

Thanks, Lee.

No, it seems that for whatever reason the HTML Clippings file was not
installed in Application Support for BBEdit. Carlton Gibson set me on
the right track with this note (responding to someone else's question)
in the "Where's the HTML clippings?" thread.

Quote: "if you "Show package contents" on the BBEdit app you can find
the "Default Support" folder. In there all the packaged clippings are
packaged up."

I decompressed the Clippings/Contents.tar.gz2 file, and moved the
"HTML.html" folder across to ~/Library/Application Support/BBEdit/
Clippings folder. (All that was there before was an "HTML
Glossary.html" folder, with 7 clippings in it.)

So, don't know why my default installation (upgrade) didn't do this.
Maybe because before I installed I renamed my earlier version of
BBEdit to "BBEdit 8". Perhaps this meant that version 9 did not,
therefore, install all its components as it is meant to. Pure
speculation!

Sounds like what you need is a way to use the Checker to check the
markup _after_ PHP has rendered it to HTML.

New to BBEdit - Couple of Questions

2008-08-29 Thread Rey Bango

Hi Guys,

I'm new to BBEdit and I have some quick ones:

1) Is there a way to make BBEdit default to having the FTP drawer open
immediately to the left always with the editor to the right? Everytime
I open BBEdit, I have to re-position everything. Is there a way to
possibly attach the FTP browser to the editor?

2) I would like the editor to always open to a specific size.
Currently it opens in a small window and then I need to resize the
editor to my needs.

3) How exactly is the multi-file search across remote servers done?
I've read the manual and tried several different things but can't get
my head around it. Could someone provide a step-by-step?

Thanks guys.

Are you doing this in what BBEdit understand to be an html document? I
just tried the "p" test (type p, wait a beat) and I got a pop-up that
inclued a p, a p_class and p_id (pure paragraph, a paragraph with a

This with default settings; I've not modified anything yet.

HTML Syntax Check wish

2008-08-29 Thread greenpig

One thing I've been wishing for forever is the ability to choose the
default DOCTYPE for the HTML Syntax checker. As it stands, if there is
any code before the DOCTYPE tag (with an exception for the XML
prolog), the checker says "Document must begin with a DOCTYPE to be
valid; checker will assume "HTML 4.01 Transitional." But sometimes an
(X)HTML document that isn't in 4.01 Transitional needs to start off
with some PHP tags, e.g., and this renders the syntax checker useless.
A preference that says "Checker assumes" with a dropdown for the
different DOCTYPEs couldn't be so hard to implement, could it? Or am I
the only person who thinks this would be super useful?

Best,

Erik

BBEdit 9 Guide Contrast

2008-08-29 Thread ffi

Not sure if this is a bug or not, but I noticed that the lowest
setting for 'guide contrast' (Preferences > Text Colours) in BBEdit 9
is too high for my taste (with 'Show Tab Stops' enabled).

I looked into com.barebones.bbedit.plist and found that the lowest
setting appears to be 4.

If anyone else wants it lower you can adjust it using the command line
like so:

defaults write com.barebones.bbedit Color:GuideContrast -int 1

Just thought I'd share,
D

Repeated Error -35 Messages

2008-08-29 Thread Steven Samuels

Version 9.0 OS X 10.4.11 PB G4

In the course or ordinary edting I get the following intermittent
error message intermittently.

"An attempt was made to read or write to a volume which does not exist
(MacOS Error code: -35)"

I am usually not reading a file or writing to one at the time. No
network volumes are mounted and no backup programs are running.

Version 9.0 is a treat--mode-less search and the ability to edit files
in the Browser window alone make the upgrade a bargain.

Thanks

Python - Newbies questions which I can't find help for

2008-08-29 Thread rh0dium

Hi all,

I have a bunch of newbie questions. None of these turned up any
responses through google

1.) Is there anyway to programatically set / alter environment
variables from within BBEdit so that when you run a script its value
is updated? i.e PYTONPATH - I know you can do this from
within .MacOSX/environment.plist - I want it dynamic.

2.) Templates - Is there anyway to have a custom set of templates
which are language specific? Found it - Stationary :)

3.) Is there anyway to have Unix Script Output not ask to Save when
you close it?

4.) Can we have the ability to colorize unix script output colors
depending on if the output is sent to STDOUT vs STDERR? See pymate
(http://pymate.blogspot.com/) for ideas.

5.) How can I define shortcut keys for "#! -> Run"? Or comment/
uncomment? Found it Menus..

6.) When the debugger comes up - is it possible to not have it open a
separate window, but work in the same one as you are in?

7.) Why does python code by default use tabs and not align indentation
methods with the source docuement? (i.e if spaces are used, use them)

8) Macros - I don't see any support for them but some threads exist
implying you can do them. When going to the help menu it shows up as
nothing.

I've always used Command-Up arrow to move the insertion to the top of

The manual is still written in FrameMaker, so if you count Classic/Mac

I don't know if anyone's ever asked this, but...

2008-08-29 Thread Brian Frick

Do you use BBEdit to write BBEdit? I'm assuming you almost
exclusively use Macs to program, since the final product is Mac-only.
But do you use any other platforms to help with development of your
software? I'm just curious. Thanks!

It's a joke. Notionally, when you ask a child what he wants for a
present, he will ask for a pony, being a child and not having any
sense of what is practical. By extension "asking for/promising a pony"
refers to naive and unrealistic demands: "Everything you asked for, no
matter what that might be, and more."

Hence: Congressman X promised peace, prosperity, national greatness,
and a pony.

Rowen,

Thanks for the feedback.

The non-modal Find window currently tries to be adaptive to usage so
that it gets out of the way in the common case.

For example, find next invoked by return will auto-close the window if
there was a match. Using the mouse and clicking on the action buttons
leaves the window open.

Here is an example:
/Users/rowen/Archives•/Unix Config Files

I see that BBEdit's built-in "Go Here in Terminal" cannot handle this
path either.

I think this is a well-known problem. It is why Marc Lianage's "Open
Terminal Here" is so complicated and is one of the few scripts that
does the job right.

(By the way, the bullet character keeps Retrospect Client from backing
up the folder. But surely other users need "special" characters for
other reasons).

Find/replace enhancement requests

2008-08-29 Thread rowen

Two requests for the wonderful new non-modal find/replace dialog box:
1) Temporarily check "in selection" while the option key is down.

I prefer to do "replace all in selection" withough leaving the find/
replace dialog box in a strange mode. I think of it as a one-off
operation; something that is very useful to do occasionally, but not
something I'd want to accidentally do when I didn't mean to. Many fine
editors implement this and it is surprisingly addictive. Also the
feedback is first-rate because you can *see* the checkbox checking and
unchecking, so there is no ambiguity about what will happen.

2) Offer a way to have the find/replace dialog box close after the
operation is done (e.g. a new preference or a new checkbox in find/
replace).

This offers one of the benefits of the old modal dialog box without
having to put up with a modal dialog box. The operation finishes and
one can then use accelerator key shortcuts to perform additional
operations.

Still...these are minor refinements on what is a huge step forward in
my opinion. Thank you very, very much for implementing non-modal find/
replace.

For completeness, you can also instruct BBEdit to use a specific svn (or p4
or cvs) binary as follows.

[from "Optional settings via 'defaults write'" in Ch. 10 of the PDF manual
(Help -> User Manual):]

CVS/Perforce/Subversion Tool Path Override

If you need to control which cvs, p4, or svn tool BBEdit should use, you
can do so by issuing any or all of the following Terminal commands.

[...]

For Subversion:

defaults write com.barebones.bbedit
Subversion:SubversionToolPathOverride /path/to/svn/binary

Re: Where's the HTML clippings?

That presumes you haven't modified the Clipping folder to, say, delete
all the clippings you wouldn't normally use. I tend to type HTML faster
than hitting a magick-key to insert a Clipping, so all the default HTML
clippings were deleted long ago so they wouldn't crowd up my legitimate
clippings. I had forgotten I had done this.

If you've deleted core Clippings from your local BBEdit Support,
then, yeah, you'll have to recover them from the .app itself.

Re: BBEdit 9.0 crashes CoreServicesUIAgent on launch

On 8/29/08 at 10:56 AM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Maarten Sneep) wrote:

>Would it be possitble to post the SHA1 checksum of the
>(working) disk image?

It would, but wouldn't help. :-)

The problem doesn't appear to be the internal structure of the
disk image, or anything that's on it, but rather the
"quarantine" mechanism that's in Mac OS X 10.5.

The system-level agent that presents the quarantine UI is
crashing trying to extract the quarantine info from the disk
image's extended attributes. These attributes are in turn set at
the time the image is _downloaded_, and for some reason, the
images downloaded from the store seem to be triggering this,
even though they checksum identically to the ones downloaded
from our web site.

So, the issue isn't that there's a corrupt disk image, nor that
there's a bug in BBEdit itself, because BBEdit is in fact not
even running when this occurs. (The Dock made the icon start
bouncing, which makes it look like BBEdit's been started, but it
hasn't.) The issue is that the system agent that allows you to
approve starting the app is crashing, and leaves everything hanging.

We're still trying to figure out why this happens so that we can
solve it "for reals", but in the meantime, downloading the disk
image from our own site seems to avoid the problem entirely.

Would it be possitble to post the SHA1 checksum of the (working) disk
image? We've had a similar problem with the new MacTeX image, only
that was a 1.1 GB file that got corrupted. Since then the checksums
are posted religiously (and the files are checked on the server right
after uploading). At least it will prevent some types corruptions.

I thought these diskimages have a checksum as well, preventing
mounting if the image itself somehow got corrupted.

In principle, I think so. In practice, you might find the
performance somewhat less than you'd like. If you're routinely
working on the same set of files, Kerri's notion of opening them
up and then doing a Replace All on the open files is a good one,
since you already have the files and there will be a lot less
time spent opening and saving them.

Okay, that makes sense.

Would a MacFUSE set up -- something like the ExpanDrive mentioned earlier --
allow it? (I've just come across the idea of sshfs and like it a lot -- in
principle...)

Yeah, that's over at:

http://tedmasterweb.com/php-bbedit-clipping-set/index.php?fa=glossary.doityourself

My intent would be to continue to use those instructions, but then to
run a fix_generated.sh script of some sort to make things PEAR friendly.

I have a BBEdit Project open, 86 files. I just multi-file searched
through all of them for a particular term, and got 643 results. Every
one of those files is on a remote server.

Re: PHP clippings great for reference. Coding? Not so much...

2008-08-29 Thread Carlton Gibson
There used to be instructions around for generating the clippings
yourself... (I don't know where exactly) If you could find them, a few
changes and you could have your PEAR compliant set.
Alternately, you could use CodeSniffer to find all the violations and then
process them via a batch script or text factory...

http://pear.php.net/package/PHP_CodeSniffer

You can always edit the clippings by hand. [???]

(Personally I like the space the clippings provide for coding.)

PHP clippings great for reference. Coding? Not so much...

2008-08-29 Thread Morbus Iff

I understand that the PHP clippings are from

   http://tedmasterweb.com/php-bbedit-clipping-set/

And, while it's certainly Complete, I'm not entirely sure it's /fast
enough/. Which is to say: when I autocomplete a clipping, I end up
spending more time "fixing" it to match with, say, PEAR guidelines.

Take strpos, for example (split multiple lines here):

  int strpos ( <#string haystack#>,
   <#mixed needle#> <#, [int offset]#> )<#;#>

To turn that into:

   strpos($string, 'whee');

I have to:

backspace (to remove "int"), tab, $string, tab, 'whee', tab,
backspace, backspace (to remove optional component and extra
  space before ).

And, on control functions like if, it's worse, where I have to turn:

  if (  )
  {
  <##>
  }
  else
  {
  <##>
  }

into:

  if () {
  <##>
  }
  else {
  <##>
  }

to match with the PEAR coding standards.

Does anyone else find this to be a problem?
Any desire to fix such a thing? Or, at least,
write a script that "fixes" the autogenerated
source to match more inline with PEAR?

Re: Search from top of page

What's "Wrap Around" good for now then? "Replace All" always wraps
around now, making it impossible to "replace all" from the insertion
point downwards (or backwards), which was possible before. Even if I
use the "old" find dialog, it doesn't work as it did in 8.x. I'd call
it a bug if previous functionality is taken away ...

Autocompletion -- getting it happening in HTML?

2008-08-29 Thread Hugh Todd

I'm a bit puzzled by the autocomplete feature, wondering if there's
something I need to activate or install to get it happening properly
in HTML.

(As an aside, I'd love to have a better Help system. Perhaps this
would have made things clearer.)

In an HTML document I press "p", and get a C symbol in a circle and
Page Template as a suggestion. Not a paragraph.

I press "ul" and get nothing.

I enter "li" and get the "C" symbol again, and "Link" as the suggestion.

I enter "h" and get nothing.

Thanks for the explanation, Jim.

So for a BBEdit 9 CLM, I should consider moving the language keywords
into predefined names. For Lasso, I can't come up with a reason off
the top of my head for moving just a portion of the keywords.

BBEdit 9.0 won't start

2008-08-29 Thread greenpig

I just purchased the upgrade (from BBEdit 8.7.2). When I try to start
the program the icon bounces in the dock for a very long time (almost
90 bounces), and then it comes to rest, but the little light doesn't
come on below it, and the program never opens. All I can do is click
on the dock item and force quit.

So I switched to another user and tried to start it from there. It
took a really long time to start up again, but eventually the icon
stopped bouncing, the little blue light did come on, and the program
opened. But when I return to my real user, no dice, even after
trashing preferences and application support files. Just a long long
wait, no blue light, no working program.

Here's what the system log shows when I try to start the program:

Aug 28 23:20:34 wasabi ReportCrash[473]: Formulating crash report for

Aug 28 23:20:34 wasabi ReportCrash[473]: Saved crashreport to /Users/

So what is going on?

I'm sending this to support as well. I need BBE to get my work done,
so I guess I'll have to bring back 8.7.2 from Time Machine in the
meantime.

Best,

Erik

Have you tried option clicking on the fold marker of the
element, and then apply a plain click again? This at least works in
the Finder (since ages) for a tree view.

Collapse and Collapse All

2008-08-29 Thread Cerebus the Aardvark
OK, am I missing something here?

If I collapse all folds, and then expand the top level fold, all folds
are expanded. There still does not seem to be a way to collapse all
folds in a selection. I have an XML file that has one top level and
171 secondary level items. I want to collapse the 171, but that does
not appear to be possible without collapsing every single one
manually.

And no, fold selection doesn't do it, and Balance and fold only folds
one at a time.

So, what I want it to look like is this:

  …
  …
  …
  …
…
  …

Old Ctags file causing crash

2008-08-29 Thread Carlton Gibson
Hi all,
1) How cool is v9?

2) I've been experiencing a crash caused by the presence of my old ctags
file. (Removing it from the directory tree removes the problem.)

I'm going to look back into creating the ctags file -- the way I was doing
it is pasted below. If anybody has any clues I'd be grateful.

3) Installing v9 has left my existing clippings alone -- which is good --
but I'm wondering where I might find the new goodies that I saw mentioned in
the change list?

4) How cool is v9?

Regards
Carlton

Projects and remote files

How can I add a remote file to a project? Maybe I am just overlooking the
