Re: My Disappoints in BBEdit 10

2011-09-12 Thread stratboy
At least, this version lacks (compared with v9) the possibility to
drag drop multiple images from the project drawer to hml documents,
and so the other
fast tag setups that v9 has, such as the pre defined title filed for
the anchor tags (we always put titles: so like the href prop, I should
not have to select the title field from the menu to define it: and why
are there both the class and id attributes then? Title is quite
mandatory in good html programming, while class and id are just
options). So, to me, it's still a downgrade.

Basically (I insist on this) It really seems that none
of the bbedit programmers are advanced *HTML* programmers. You should
hire someone to extensively check the real usability and effectiveness
of the html tools. I'm shure you would end up strongly improving this
aspect of bbedit.

You surely did something good by adding the ability to add arbitrary
properties to html tags, but you stripped out ALL the good things
there were in v9. v10 seems just an incomplete draft, not a
finished upgrade. So right direction, but far from the final step (at
least for what affects the HTML TOOLS and projects).
Maybe for say, a C++ programmer is a huge upgrade, I don't know.
For me, an html/css/js/as/php programmer, using bbedit since 1999, v10
it's not an upgrade, compared with v9.6

2011-09-12 Thread bobembry
Well Patrick, let me point out some differences: Point to a file on my hard
drive and get a URL rather than a file path. The choice of type of
addressing. Target is already completed for me. Access to recent URLs,
Internal Anchors and Current Folder. I also use Default Folder X and
LaunchBar which are intertwined with the process.

Prior to version 10 I've been satisfied with all previous versions of BBEdit
at least until I found out that the ability to index my site with 2800
objects had been removed.

I think Barebones should have anticipated this reaction and offered easy
work arounds (transition processes) immediately on the first launch of the
new version.

My last comment on this subject. I have other things to do.

Applying tag to multiple paragraphs

2011-09-12 Thread stevedennie
In previous versions of BBEdit, I could select multiple paragraphs of
text, type my shortcut for the tag, and it would place the tags at
the beginning and end of EACH paragraph.

With version 10, I get only an opening tag at the beginning of the
selected text, and a closing tag at the end. There are no opening and
closing tags for each paragraph.

This means I need to apply the shortcut to each paragraph
individually--definitely a step backward.

I've been through all of the pref menus, but can't find a solution.

Am I missing something, or was this functionality removed?

While that's vaguely unkind, I admit that when I first encountered all those
dialog boxes in back in BBEdit 6.5 I thought, "Hey, that's kind of nifty," and
pretty much never used them except for a few times when I couldn't remember
something especially fiddly (usually CSS).

Something that my time spent with TextMate taught me is that clippings--or
snippets in TM's parlance--are often a lot faster. Make a clipping with the text

<#link_text#>

And bind it to the key of your choice -- I use Control-Shift-L -- and it's
probably going to be faster than fiddling with the dialog box in the first
place. (Also, you can bind Control-Shift-L to other clipping sets with a
concept of "link," so you know that pressing it does The Right Thing whether
you're using HTML, Markdown, or the template language of your choice.)

[ANN] BBEdit 10.0.2 (3091) pre-release

2011-09-12 Thread Rich Siegel

Good { morning, afternoon, evening },

A new 10.0.2 pre-release build is now available.

Note that this is a _pre-release_ version. The intent is to fix
bugs and address areas of improvement based on what our
customers have reported. However, since the software is at this
point not fully tested, there _may_ be bugs and regressions. If
this prospect makes you nervous, then sticking with the public
release versions is your best course of action. Nobody will be
offended if you choose to do so; you're under no obligation to
install and use anything but a public release. :-)

Following is a summary of the changes in the software since the
last public release. The change notes are organized into
additions, changes, and fixes, and are annotated where
appropriate with case numbers. So if you recognize a number
corresponding to a support case that was opened for you, you can
now verify that it's been fixed correctly.

One final note: If you run into a bug in a pre-release version,
PLEASE DO NOT REPORT THE BUG TO THE LIST. This includes asking
about whether others have seen the same problem. Instead, please
send a bug report to and we will deal
with it there. This will help us keep the list discussion on
topic and productive for all list members.

version 10.0.2 (3091) (9/12/2011)

Additions
-

* It's now possible to preview things using "Preview in
BBEdit" that
aren't HTML or HTML generators. So, for example, if you
preview a
C++ document, you'll see an HTML rendering of the document
as it
appears in your editing window (and the same HTML that
would be

generated by using the "Copy as Styled HTML" or "Save as Styled
HTML" commands). This is useful in situations where you
want to

typeset your code, and need to be able to experiment with different
page templates and styles.

* When previewing documents in a particular language, you can specify
the default CSS to be used when previewing, simply by
placing an

appropriately named CSS file in `Application Support/BBEdit/Preview
CSS/`. The name of the file should be of the pattern
`DefaultCSS_*.css`, in which the `*` is replaced by the
name of the
language. So, for example, to designate a file as the
default CSS

for previewing Markdown, you'd name the file
`DefaultCSS_Markdown.html`.

Changes
---

* Unix filters (run from the "Apply Text Filter" menu) now
accept the
selection on `STDIN`. This is a change from previous
versions, in
which BBEdit wrote a temporary file and passed it as
`argv[0]`. If

you have any Unix scripts in the "Text Filters" folder, you *will*
need to modify them in order for them to continue working.
On the
other hand, this change will generally make Unix filters
easier to

write, and makes it possible to share Unix filters with text
factories, because the latter has run their filters this
way since

forever.

Fixes
-

* [NFR] Fixed bug in which the scrollbar in the OFBN window didn't
correctly adjust as the window changed shape.

* [218308] [NFR] Fixed bug in which name collisions for drag-and-drop
package installs weren't correctly detected and alerted.

* [218409] Fixed bug in which "Open File by Name" was inappropriately
treated as "Open Selection" in projects which had a
selected file

and no active editing view.

* [218648] Fixed bug in which paths dropped into text views or shell
worksheets weren't properly delimited with the appropriate separator
(space for worksheets, line break for text views).

* [215608] Fixed bug which prevented CSS files from showing up
in the

"Preview CSS" menu in live preview windows, and which also broke
language-based clipping set auto switching.

* Preview windows now remember the page template and CSS that
were in

use for the document being previewed.

* [214057, 214916] Fixed bug in which "Reveal in Project List" didn't
work if the parent folder(s) of the document being revealed weren't
open.

* Corrected bundle versions, Get Info short strings, and copyright
dates in the built-in language modules.

* Made a memory management fix and modernized some code in the `bbdiff`
tool.

=end=

The package can be downloaded from our web server:

Enjoy,

I tend to write entire paragraphs on one "line" in the HTML
document, so I find the current behavior less than ideal.

It was easy enough to work around, it, though. Try the following
search-and-replace grep pattern:

Find: ^(.+)(\r?)(?:\r?)
Replace: \1\2

Make sure "[x] Grep" and "[x] Select text only" are both
checked. Select the paragraphs you want to tag, and run that search-and-replace.

I have it as a saved pattern, so it's not like I'm typing it
every time.

Could always put this in a script or a Text Factory, too, so
that it could have a command-key assigned to it.

Of course it would be idea if there were some way to tell the
HTML tools that you want this tag applied to each line of the
current selection, instead of the whole selection at once. That
would work wonderfully for , , , and lots of other cases.

for previewing Markdown, you'd name the file
`DefaultCSS_Markdown.html`.

Are we allowed to cheer for new features?

YAY!!!

If the answer to the above is "no", then I humbly apologize. :-D

later, and we regret that old versions of the software are no longer
available for purchase.

I'm sorry we can't be of assistance with this specific request [...]

Well that really sucks. Evidently BareBones would rather we run 6.5
than 9.3, which makes no sense at all.

To Ron: Ditto what Doug said.

It's arbitrary and nonsensical policies like BareBones' which drive
me to seek pirated sofware when I would rather purchase.

Watt, you're correct. It works just fine in 10.0.2. Thanks. I'm a

I use TextWrangler on the legacy hardware around here. I get the latest
version which we can run on PowerPC machines or machines that we can't upgrade
for whatever reason, mostly servers.

TextWrangler is a great swiss army knife tool for making changes on these
machines and then BBEdit does the heavy lifting on development machines.

Project List Sorting Preferences

2011-09-12 Thread Chip Warden
Is there a way to show all folders at a given level first in the project list
instead of interspersed alphabetically with the files in the project? I
searched the manual but couldn't find anything.

Thanks,

Chip

Rich, can you explain this, perhaps with an example of a UNIX filter
that did work and which now does not.

I have tried a couple of my own, which I had already moved to the
Text Filters folder when the nomenclature changed, and they work fine
just as before; for example this one, which resembles most of the
others:

#!/usr/bin/perl
use strict;
my $i;
while(<>){ # or ...
  $i++;
  print sprintf("%4d: ",$i), $_;
}
__END__

I'm given to understand that in some cases, such as <> in Perl,
it'll Just Work™ so the statement in the change notes may not
always be accurate and will probably be amended for the final release.

I think this one has continued working because it's written in Perl
using the <> idiom. I believe Perl is smart about this and uses the
files on argv or reads from stdin depending on context; in this case,
the script behaves as before because Perl has automatically made the
change for you! Isn't that clever.
