Collections

2014-08-07 Thread Watts Martin
Curiosity point: in a project window, there's an Add Collection...
command which adds a little box icon to your project window you can add
files and folders to. I can't actually find an explanation of what
collections are meant to be used for in the BBEdit manual. There's no
section about them, and in fact they're barely mentioned at all -- in
Creating Files and Folders we're told you can create a file or folder
within the initially selected collection (if any), and in Script Access
to Project Contents we're told you can recurse to explore the items
contained within folders or collections... and as near as I can tell,
that's it.

I'm just curious what the use case for collections is supposed to be. I
have files that I want to keep outside my project root in an in-progress
folder, and I can add that to a collection -- but I can also just add it to
the project with Add Items... and save a step of indirection. Is there
something I'm missing? (And is this perhaps something that should be added
to the manual?)

That's exactly what a collection is :-), i.e. a collection is a
visual navigation aid which allows you to group items (files and
folders) within the file list independent of their positions on disk.

So, if this helps, I'll be happy to add same to the next turn of
the manual... :-)

Okay, thanks. Maybe just a sentence or two in the manual. It's
discoverable, but very slightly mysterious. :)

Re: project's folders within collections no longer open after migration to 10.0

2011-08-03 Thread combi
Turns out that redragging the folders to the collections is only a
temporary fix. After the project is closed and reopened, the bug
reappears, and the folders no longer.

No response from BBEdit support for a week on this. I don't know if
I'm alone on this, but I'd advise others to avoid migrating projects
from 9.x to 10.0 until this is addressed.

Now, in the project sidebar, folders that live within a collection no
longer expand and reveal the files within them. This is most
frustrating! I have to redrag each folder back to the correct
collection, and delete the old (non working) folder, to fix it. Rather
 tedious.

 Any ideas?

 Thanks,

 -C

P.S. I checked the file filter (magnifier button) at the bottom of the
project sidebar, and it's not the problem.
