Re: Lost wireless device?
Larry, I know I am waking up an old thread, but I have a development I thought was interesting and I need some guidance. This device: 03:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation Dell Wireless 1390 WLAN Mini-PCI Card (rev 01) quit showing up in fedora 7 and never appeared in fedora 8, however, I just installed opensuse 10.3 on the second drive and it has reappeared. I did the standard update after the initial install and it disappeared again. The original kernel was replaced by this one, 2.6.22.13-0.3-default This is what I am thinking, I am going to cp the /lib/modules/2.6.22.13-0.3-default to a safe location and then do a scratch install of opensuse 10.3 and maybe compare the kernels and their modules. Is this possible and would it yield the reason why this device exists under one kernel and not another? Shoudl I be talking to the kernel devel list or maybe opensuse devel list? It seems that nothing is physically wrong with the machine if one kernel sees the device and not another. Also, just a side note, I did an install of vista to factory state and as soon as the nvidia430 updates were applied the radio light went off. Any thoughts. -- John Registered Linux User 263680, get counted at http://counter.li.org ___ Bcm43xx-dev mailing list Bcm43xx-dev@lists.berlios.de https://lists.berlios.de/mailman/listinfo/bcm43xx-dev

I took the unused hd out of my wifes machine and placed it in the primary slot of mine, reinstalled vista from the recovery dvd and reflashed the bios. The system still does not have the device listed. I do not understand how the bridge could just disappear without some kind of catastrophic failure of the main board. I mean if it was a module problem then reverting back to the previous working kernel the problem should have gone away. Every other component is working flawlessly. I am going to keep searching the kernel lists for a possible solution. -- John Registered Linux User 263680, get counted at http://counter.li.org ___ Bcm43xx-dev mailing list Bcm43xx-dev@lists.berlios.de https://lists.berlios.de/mailman/listinfo/bcm43xx-dev

The only flashing program I have found on HP.com is the winflash utility that is designed to run under windows vista, they also have an xp version as well. I did not personally want to reinstall vista, but if necessary I can move some files around and make the second hard drive the primary for an installation. Ok, I did a clean boot of both machines with the dmesg -c command being applied just before the reboot. So far the only thing that I see different is this line: Allocate Port Service[:00:03.0:pcie03] This is in the dmesg output from my wifes working machine and the output of lspci ties this entry to the id number of the wlan card. -- John Registered Linux User 263680, get counted at http://counter.li.org ___ Bcm43xx-dev mailing list Bcm43xx-dev@lists.berlios.de https://lists.berlios.de/mailman/listinfo/bcm43xx-dev
Re: Lost wireless device?
Ok, to revisit this issue for a little while. I powered down my lappy, removed the pcie wireless card and then place that card in my wife's identical machine and behold it shows up as the correct device and functions. I placed the card from my wife's machine in my machine and booted up, did lspci and it does not appear in the list of device. I have searched the bios thoroughly and have found no option to turn on/off the wireless card. The only thing I have is a switch on the front of the machine that will turn off the radio. I have also regressed back to the previous kernel that worked with my system and is the one on my wife's computer. Kernel Version 2.6.22.4-65.fc7 Is there something in the b43/bcm43xx code or firmware that could have disabled the bios support for the card? Yes, I powered the machine down completely and gave it about 2 minutes unplugged with the battery out. I opened the case and looked at the card and it does not appear to be burned or any caps ruptured. I am considering moving the card from my wife's machine and then put it in my just for a test. -- John Registered Linux User 263680, get counted at http://counter.li.org ___ Bcm43xx-dev mailing list Bcm43xx-dev@lists.berlios.de https://lists.berlios.de/mailman/listinfo/bcm43xx-dev
Lost wireless device?
Hello, I just upgraded fedora 7 to the 2.6.22.5-76 kernel last night. After the update the ndiswrapper quit working. So I thought I would give it another shot with the native driver. I downloaded the version 3 and 4 firmwares and tried the first time with the b43 driver which did not work, after modprobing the driver the dmesg out indicated that the radio was turned off. I then tried the bcm43xx driver with the version 3 firmware and it output the same thing the radio was turned off. I then reinstalled the ndiswrapper and installed the driver that I had been using, when I did ndiswrapper -l it indicated that the driver was installed with an alternate driver of ssb. Now the wireless still does not work and when I used to see lspci output 4311 at 00:03:0 now the device is not listed by lspci, it is like the device has just been removed from the machine. The machine is an HP DV9208NR with the Dell wlan mini pcie device. I have looked in the bios and there are not options to turn it off or on. Is it possible that the driver somehow turned the card off completely or maybe some other explanation. Thanks for any thoughts or assistance. -- John Registered Linux User 263680, get counted at http://counter.li.org ___ Bcm43xx-dev mailing list Bcm43xx-dev@lists.berlios.de https://lists.berlios.de/mailman/listinfo/bcm43xx-dev

Ok, I have been trying to make heads or tails of it, which driver do I need to use for the broadcom 4311 dell wlan 1390. Is it b43 or bcm43xx? However, I have to boot with the pci=nommconf in order for the ndiswrapper to drive the broadcom 4311. I periodically black list the ndiswrapper and enable the bcm43xx-80211 driver and this past week was the first time I could get the native driver to associate with my router using wep encryption. I could not get more than 11m out of it though. If I tried to force it to any rate greater than 11 then it would associate, but it would not allow any through put. -- John Registered Linux User 263680, get counted at http://counter.li.org ___ Bcm43xx-dev mailing list Bcm43xx-dev@lists.berlios.de https://lists.berlios.de/mailman/listinfo/bcm43xx-dev

wlan 1390, broadcom bcm4311
Hello and greetings to the list members. I have been using opensuse 10.2 with the ndiswrapper on a 2.6.18 kernel and this worked. I just recently converted this laptop to fedora 7 with a 2.6.21 kernel. I have found that ndiswrapper will not drive the card because of the 4k stacks. I have been trying to figure out the bcm43xx_mac80211 and I keep coming up short. Here is what I have tried and some of the responses; I have read that I need the ver 4 firmware so I downloaded it from here, http://downloads.openwrt.org/sources/wl_apsta-3.130.20.0.o. and when I modprobe the driver I find this line in the dmesg output bcm43xx_mac80211: Loading firmware version 351.126 (2006-07-29 05:54:02) Does this look like the correct firmware version? I am not sure! Here is the interesting part, if I bring up wlan0 and do a iwlist scanning I see my cell along with about 6 others in the neighborhood, but I keep getting these messages in the dmesg output: bcm43xx_mac80211: Adding Interface type 2 bcm43xx_mac80211: Loading firmware version 351.126 (2006-07-29 05:54:02) ssb: Switching to ChipCommon core, index 0 ssb: Switching to IEEE 802.11 core, index 1 bcm43xx_mac80211: Radio turned on bcm43xx_mac80211: Radio enabled by hardware bcm43xx_mac80211: !WARNING!
